Title: WADESON - Victoria lookup please
Post by: rosball on Wednesday 03 August 11 02:44 BST (UK)
Hello there,
I am trying to complete this story of some gg aunts and uncles.  This is what I have discovered through ancestry and trove but there are several gaps (and I am trying to avoid downloading too many images).  Any help would be very much appreciated.
I have Francis Edward Wadeson (1855-1927) married Elizabeth (Lizzie) Rasmussen (1865-1941)
Their children were all born in Tatura, Echuca, Victoria:
•   Blanche Florence Wadeson (1888-1973) married Richard Alfred Wilkinson (1882-1962)
•   John Herbert Wadeson (1889-1940) unmarried
•   Francis Peter Wadeson (1891 ...???)
•   Irena Mary Wadeson (1893-1981) married Sylvester McCabe(1893-1949) lived in Kiama NSW
•   Ruby Charlotte Wadeson (1895-1929) married John Alexander Davison (1881-1963).
•   Helena Constance Wadeson (1896-1897)
•   Florence Evelyn Wadeson  (1898 - ???)
•   Victor Edward Wadeson (1900 - ???)
•   Emily Ethel Wadeson (1902 ...???)
•   William Arthur Wadeson (1903-1963)
•   Richard Thomas Wadeson (1905-1960) married Christina Emily ?
Thanks,
   Ros

Thanks Gerry but the Diamond Creek Wadesons are a different family but very confusingly (!) they called their children very similar names.  I keep expecting to find a link further back but they seem to have come from a different part of England.

The Arthur William Wadeson marriage that Alison mentioned is part of the other Wadeson family (I think).

TROVE has a mention of the death of Francis Edward WADESON of heart disease.

http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/3883874?

There are a couple of other mentions if you search using Tatura + Wadeson including a Court case in 1911 where some-one supplied drink to Frank WADESON knowing he was prohibited!

I also restricted the search to Victorian newspapers, which cut out a few more!  However the Eltham WADESONS keep getting in the way.  There also seems to be another Frances WADESOn in Euroa area.

Thanks Judith.

Perhaps I should rethink whether the Diamond Creek Wadesons are a separate family.  Francis Edward Wadeson was born in Heidelberg, Vic to Edward Wadeson (1824-1889) and Francis Emma Mitchell (1796-1842).   Edward Wadeson (my gg grandfather) lived in Heidelberg from his arrival in 1844 until 1865 when he deserted family and went to live in Tatura.
His parents were Samuel James Wadeson(1790-1881) of London and Romford Essex and Emily Minet (1796-1842).

I found an obit to Richard Wadeson from Diamond Creek saying that his family was from Lancashire so have recently been ignoring that family.  And I didn't find a Richard Wadeson as (say) brother to Edward.

However Heidelberg is quite close to Diamond Creek and the children's names are very similar.   I think I should relook at this.  Hmmm and looking at the 1856 electoral roll for Heidelberg I see both an Edward Wadeson and Richard Wadeson there.

   Ros

Ros,

From the Cyclopedia of Victoria, the District of Heidelberg became a Shire on 27th January 1871 and Mr Richard Wadeson was the Shire President.

Thanks Gerry.  Richard Wadeson seems to be the patriarch of the Diamond Creek mob but annoyingly I still can't find any link to my Wadesons.

There is a birth and a death of a Richard Wadeson in 1851-1852 in Heidelberg but he has a father of Laurence Wadeson  who is also not linked to my Wadesons (as far as I know).

Hello Ros,
Heidelberg and Diamond Creek are no that far apart  ;)
Births of children all in Heidelberg to Edward WADESON and Francis Emma MITCHELL :
1. Elizabeth b 1851 Church of England KEELBUNDOORA { NOW HEIDELBERG } Fiche:369 # 25336 d Heidelberg aged 1 1852 { there are 2 entries ??#25443 and # 25470 Fiche: 370 and 371 Same church.
2. Elizabeth b 1853 Church of England KEELBUNDOORA { NOW HEIDELBERG } Fiche:370# 25447

Laurence and Mary had 2 children Richard William b 1851 and Mary Sibyle b 1852 d 1853 all at Heidelberg at the same church.

Richard and Elizabeth had 7 children in Heidelberg and then 1 at DUCK in 1864 and then 5 at Violet Town then a death of a child at BALM in 1875 and then 1 Violet Town in 1878 { pretty close to Euroa}

Richard WADESON d 1858 aged 56 { birthplace LANC} - Richard and unknown mother # 8696
I think this is the father of Lawrence:

Thanks Alison - lots to think about.  There does seem to be a cluster of Wadesons around Heidelberg and it not a common name.

I should add that Edward's elder brother Samuel also came out to Australia and went to live in Bathurst, NSW as a solicitor and it was quite easy to find articles in trove about his death and his wife's sad death as very few Wadesons in NSW.  Ironic that the only relative I know about went to live somewhere entirely different.

Thanks Gerry.
Apparently Samuel's business went downhill as he was suffering from epilepsy.  And then not long after he died his wife threw herself down a well in grief at his death.  Quite a sad story.

Well it's all unravelling.   :'(   :'(

I thought I was certain (yes dangerous) about parents of Edward Wadeson (1824-1889) and Emma Frances Mitchell who married in St James Melbourne in 1849 (both residents of Heldelberg).  No parents names on marriage cert.

On Alison's advice I contacted St James to see if church records had parents names but they replied to say no.  (I also contacted St John's in Heidelberg where other Wadesons were married but no reply yet)

On a previous post you have told me that Edward died in Tatura on 13 Oct 1889 and there was a will but no entry in death index.  So I presume there is no death certificate ...?  Anyway if he had deserted family and was living alone it would probably not be informative.

So I went looking for Emma's death record again and I found she died in Sofala in 1901!  What was she doing in Sofala when she and her children lived all their lives in Victoria? ???

I had previously dismissed this possible death as it had different parents (James and Mary) and age (66 at death in 1901) would make her 14 at marriage.  There is a lovely picture of headstone in online Sofala cemetery - thank you to whoever is responsible! - which says she was 66.

With new search skills (Thanks Judith) I searched for Sofala+Wadeson and found a tribute notice in trove which confirms that it is her.

I'm off to Western Sydney Records Office in the hope of seeing her death certificate and find out more about her parents etc

regards,
   Ros

Hi Alison,
I can't make out the witnesses names - Robert someone of Melbourne and Carolyn Thompson? of Heidelberg - it was squashed in at the end.

And I was silly to think Western Sydney Records Office would have death certificate info - I was packed off by a very stern hassled woman - not a helpful welcoming place for beginners.  I will have to wait patiently for the transcription to arrive to find out about my "new" gg grandmother.

The transcript of death record for Frances Emma Wadeson (nee Mitchell) arrived  :)

She was born in Harrow, England in approx 1833 with parents James Mitchell, coachman, and Mary Farrell.  She was in Victoria for 28 years and NSW for 25 years and was 16 when she married Edward Wadeson in 1849 in Melbourne.

This means she was about 15 when she arrived in Australia around 1848.  Was she a convict and/or did she come with her parents or alone?
I haven't been able to find her birth or her parents' marriage in UK,  or their arrival in Australia.  And searching for her parents living/dying in Australia -  there seem to be lots of possibilities but no close fits.

Also (from death certificate) there was another daughter (which I didn't know about) = Blanche Wadeson b about 1865 and alive in 1901.  I haven't been able to find her birth in Vic or NSW (or under name Mitchell in case parents had divorced)

I think this is a brick wall ...?

Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

regards,
   Ros

Thanks Judith.   The first references seem to be her.  I wonder why I can't find her birth or death.

The entries for Blanche Florence Wadeson were probably her niece, daughter of Francis Edward Wadeson and Elizabeth Rasmussen 1888-1973 and married Wilkinson in 1942.

Emma had another daughter Elizabeth 1853-1879 so I am now thinking that the Blanche Elizabeth Wadeson b 1874 could have been Elizabeth's daughter and who Emma raised as her own. Well it's a possibility - I'll look into that.

I'm a descendant of Richard Wadeson who settled in (Balmatten) Euroa, in the mid 1850's. Your findings of Francis Wadeson's family interests me. I believe him to be the eldest son of Richard Wadeson. If he is, he returned to to the Family farm at Balmatten & ran the farm after Richard returned to Melbourne due to Heart problems.
I notice that you refer to the Diamond Creek Wadesons as a different Family. The Diamond Creek Wadesons are Descendants Of Thomas Wadeson, Brother of Richard, & Laurance (Heidelberg) & another Brother - Edward. They all initially settled in Heidelberg, Laurance stayed, Thomas moved to Diamond Creek, & Richard moved to (Balmatten) Euroa. We don't know what happened to Edward. I'm of the opinion that Francis Edward Wadeson (Tatura) is the eldest son of Richard Wadeson (Balmatten) Euroa. You may have uncovered more details that may help me. Thanks Tony

Hi Tony,
Welcome to rootschat  :) :)  Lovely to make contact with you.

I think I have sorted out all the Wadeson's now.   Yes I was mistaken in thinking that the Diamond Creek family were a different branch.

I'm a descendant of Edward so I know what happened to him  :)

I'll send you a pm (personal message) with my e-mail address.   To read the message just click on "My Messages" in the brown banner at the top.
