Have you tried to trace his children, to see where they lived (and died)?  Have you found him on a census in 1910?

Have you checked with the Cemetery to see if Virginia is buried with Andrew ?

http://www.rootschat.com/links/0ezt/

Shelly has found a City Directory entry for 1937 and there is a Naturalization for Andrew Anderson Forbes 29 July 1937.
The California Death Index starts in 1940 and he doesn'tt seem to be listed so perhaps died between 1937 and 1940.

I couldn't find Andrew in 1910.  According to his 1918 WWI draft reg card, he and Jennie were living in Los Angeles.  If he can be found on a census in 1910, it might provide additional clues.

I realize the descriptions for Jennie and Virginia don't match, but is there any chance Jennie is a nickname for Virginia and that her census information was given incorrectly for one of the census returns?

According to the California death index, Virginia's maiden name was McManus.  Looking at the 1900 census, Virginia M McManus was living with her family, including James (father), Sarah (mother) and brother James M or N.

The 1930 census shows Sarah and James living in San Diego.  They are both widowed.  James was a carpenter (carpenter / house).

According to the California death index, Sarah passed away in San Diego in 1944.

Maybe Andrew and Virginia settled in San Diego to be near her mother?

Sarah and James were living in National City, San Diego in 1940.  James was a carpenter / PWA.  (Probably Public Works Administration.)

After a quick search, I do not see Andrew in National City (I was hoping he might be located near his mother-in-law.)

I think you should try to contact the cemetery directly, rather than Find a Grave.  Find a Grave is just volunteers and doesn't necessarily have information about everyone buried at that cemetery.

You're welcome.

His internment form indicates that he was originally interred in Italy and was interred in San Diego on 7 Mar. 1949.  His service number was 39108510.  Based on that service number, this was his enlistment - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/KMKG-7PQ

Next time, please mention all the information that you have so others don't duplicate your efforts.

Sometimes, the internment forms will list a next of kin, so it's generally a source worth checking.  Short of finding an obituary or ordering the service records, I don't know if there's any way else to determine whose son he was.

Can remember spending hours on this one at various times, as I know Lisa in California and Shelly would also have done. Can't find my notes on this one now - probably thrown them away  ::)  Just remind me - have you ever found a birth record for Donald A Forbes 6 th June 1922 ? Although the 1930 census didn't say he was adopted, it could be a consideration, since the other son Andrew W Forbes was described as adopted and don't think anyone ever found him   ???

Have you explored the possibility of enquiring to see if there was an obituary for Virginia's Mother Sarah McManus who died 20 th August 1944 San Diego - IF  there was one - it could mention surviving grandchildren ? Even the other 2 Visile (or what ever name it turns out to be) and Clara ? Food for thought anyway.

There is a chap mentioned on the link below who will do Obituary Look ups San Diego - might be worth a try  ???

Thanks Sandra have done this did contact another source on the San Francisco obituary library and no have never been able to find a birth for this Donald this family are a mystery ....I think what some one said about Jennie and Virginia being the same person might be true as I suppose Jennie could be short for Virginia what do you think  :)

Yes, if she were referred to as "Ginnie/Ginny", enumerator cold have mistaken that for Jennie.
Virginia could have been the name of that other daughter, you never know.  Think I looked at that possibility.

Just an update on Andrew Anderson Forbes found 2 records US Social Security Applications and claims 1 says life claim 24/5/1957 notes 20/4/1979
The next says original ssn notes 23/12/1983 ? not sure what this means
Would I be correct in saying Andrew was still alive in 1983 ..Thanks Rosie
Title: Re: death look up California
Post by: *Sandra* on Monday 27 July 15 12:28 BST (UK)
Hi Rosie,

The U.S. Social Security Applications and Claims Index is great because it is picking up more details than the SSDI provides.  The 24 May 1957 date shows a life claim and you would think Andrew was still alive at that date.  Unsure about the 20 April 1979 date  - would make him 95 years old. On other entries I have seen, a death date is also included but not on the entry for Andrew  ??? Would be nice to think he was still living but he doesn't seem to show on the SSDI.
The notes section on some I have looked at showed how at the time of death there was a name variation in their records but Andrew A Forbes is still written as Andrew A Forbes so that is a mystery.
Will try and read through a few blogs to see if the mystery unravels.

HI Rosie,

Was pleased to see you had found something new - always worth while going back to the brick-wall, just shows how new things come along every so often. Yes, U.S. Social Security Applications and Claims Index is a recent addition on ancestry - can you give me the link to the 23/12/1983 one - must be having a blank moment - couldn't see that one.

Thanks
Sandra  ;)

Added I see the entry you refer to now. I am beginning to wonder if that is the date the info was put on the system - just a thought anyhow.  ???

HI Rosie,

Just reading thru again - reply 45 - did you have any luck with an obit for Sarah McManus (mother of Virginia)
Would be handy if it named those possibly married grandchildren ?

In reply 35 you mentioned brothers in Canada - have you traced those ?  Not sure if it was the same brothers but are they the ones that ended up in the USA in 1920 and then disappeared ?
Sorry about the questions, just wondering if there is an angle we haven't looked at.  Obituaries for any of those could help the search or throw up another clue.

Regards
Sandra

This one is obviously not yours - I can see a record of a WW2 Draft for a Andrew Forbes born 24 December 1883 Glasgow Scotland with a wife Ella Forbes - Burnside Clatsop Oregon. This one died 17 September 1958 Clatsop Oregon. The U.S. Social Security Applications and Claims Index has a claim date for him as 22 September 1950 and the notes say 27 Dec 1978 name listed as Andrew Forbes.  Perhaps the notes are nothing to do with applications or deaths, might they have been put on the system then  ???

Hi Sandra the first claim 24/5/1957 notes date 20/4/1079 the name listed for that one is Andrew A Forbes ...The second has his full name Andrew Anderson Forbes b 30 January 1884 Aberdeen mother Agnes Ferguson father William Forbes type of claim original ssn ? notes 23/12/1983 name listed as Andrew Anderson Forbes

Have never been able to find him on the 1940 census did see that one you mentioned Andrew and Ella Forbes ..
The last record I had for his brother's James and William was the 1920 USA census ...but will keep looking ..as this was progress today  :D

Title: Re: death look up California

My point about the other one Rosie was that he died 17 September 1958 - yet his  U.S. Social Security Applications and Claims Index notes say 27 Dec 1978 name listed as Andrew Forbes.
This could be when he was added to the system or some alteration made but he obviously wasn't alive at that date.  The same could apply in the instance of your Andrew Anderson Forbes.

There are two Social Security applications for him, both giving the parents as William Forbes and Agnes Ferguson and birth as Aberdeen.  Both numbers were issued in California.  He made a life claim on 24 May 1957, probably for retirement benefits.

Interestingly there were a few newspaper reports about Verlie M Nizuk.

A case of disturbing the peace against Mrs Verlie M Nizuk was thrown out 17 June 1939 (San Francisco Examiner) 17 June 1939 - page 5

13 July 1941 - San Francisco Examiner - It took 11 Nizuk children to make a plea to a judge regarding a fine (of $90 for damage there father was accused of making to an automobile of a Mr Cummins) and he couldn't pay out of his $125 earnings. Instead Papa Nizuk got 6 months probation and ordered to pay something every two weeks towards the $40.

Another report in The Press Democrat - 27 January 1940 - page 3 (Part of the article said - San Francisco Probation Officer said Verlie was not mentally competent to manage her affairs and her home.)

17 Jan 1940 - The Press Democrat - Santa Rosa, California -  (page 2) Alexander Nizuk charging that his wife was being unlawfully detained in Sonoma State Home - petitioned that she should be released in  order that a seventh child expected within 6 weeks might not be born in a mental hospital. Stating she was not feeble minded an d had successfully cared for all her children since they were married, all of whom were mentally normal and she had been able to manage all her own affairs without assistance.

Reports in October (11th and 12 th - 1940) Mrs Verlie Nizuk  declared 7 of her 8 children had been taken from her by a court for reasons she had not been able to learn and that she had been unable to learn the whereabouts of the children.............etc etc

Sandra

Alexander and Verlie were married 2 December 1929

Loads of articles -

Yes, that's the right connection.  I went back to check and Clarence was one of the children named in the 13 July 1941 article - when they were trying to get Pape Nizuk off the automobile damage rap.

"The tenth child "Clarence - is having a vacation from the rest of the family so he didn't come to court with mama, papa and his brothers and sisters."

Also mentioned in the obit for Verlie M Nizuk - 3 January 1979 - San Francisco Examiner.

Verlie M Nizuk at rest December 27 1978 beloved wife of Alex Nizuk, loving mother of (names 11 children) idolised grandmother of 24 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren......etc.....
Interment was Holy Cross Cemetery.

Andrew seems to disappear after that 1930 census and the newspaper report October 1931.

Andrew was not named (nor was Clarence) with the other Nizuk children on the 1954 petition for naturalization for Alexander James Nizuk.
