Title: Location of Gravesend addresses - help please
Post by: park_town on Friday 12 August 11 12:19 BST (UK)
Hello Folks, I am trying to locate a couple of addresses in Gravesend and I wonder if you are able to help me please.

William Sanford b1817 [a Trinity House Pilot, Licensee, Justice of the Peace, and a Magistrate] died 2 Mar 1895 late of Tudor Lodge, The Grove, Gravesend aged 75.

Do you know where Tudor Lodge, The Grove is/was located?

His wife Harriot died 24 Mar Campbell Lodge, Wrotham Rd, Gravesend aged 90.

Do you know where Campbell Lodge, Wrotham Rd is/was located?

1881 he was living 60 Parrock Street - is there a [shipping] shop at 60 Parrock Street. Or maybe the census word is Ship owner [not Shop owner].

===
Thomas George Sandford b1842
1907 Mayor of Gravesend
1916 Thomas George Sandford died 15 Mar late of South House, Windmill St, Gravesend.

Do you know where South House, Windmill St is/was located?

Thanks,

60 Parrock Street is now a nursing home.

I hope this helps

Rishile, thanks yes I have looked at Google maps at the streets.

It's the location of the house name I cannot find:

Where is Tudor Lodge in The Grove.
Where is Campbell Lodge in Wrotham Rd.
Where is South House in Windmill Street.

btw thanks for the info about 60 Parrock Street being a nursing home.
 :)

Have you checked www.old-maps.co.uk? If you locate the streets on google maps then compare with old-maps, you might be lucky to find that individual houses, farms and other landmarks are named.

Ruskie, no. Not tried Old-Maps.
Not the easiest site to navigate but I thank you for the tip  8)

After some serious eye-balling I managed to find South House in Windmill Street, but not the others. Oh well that's one more than I had.

Umm, btw the nursing home is 60 Parrock Road [not Parrock Street]  ;)

You are right anykey - old-maps can be hard to find your way around, and some maps are more detailed than others. Maybe Kent library/archives might have some detailed maps.

Hi Ruskie :)

Looking on the 1891 census, Tudor Lodge is situated in Parrock St, pencilled underneath is The Grove.  It was near The Coach and Horses, now an indian restaraunt, called The Tufail. There is a white painted house on the corner of The Grove and Parrock St, and 2 brick built between the grove and the tufail.  Could this be one of the houses you are looking for?
If you go on google maps, it should easier to see than my garbled message :)

Best wishes..... Iris :)

Iris, ah, thanks for that. I "walked" down there using street view only yesterday. I saw The Tufail you refer to. So that was The Coach n' Horses was it. Thanks for taking the time to havva butchers.

I also found that Lion court at 70 Parrock was The Lion pub, so my number 60 must be where the new flats are today. Oh Look! The Tufail is opposite, ha ha.

And you know what, I hadn't revisited the 1891 census. Isn't it funny how you see more once you gain familiarity with the local surrounding. So thanks fer that nudge  ;)

No problem :) I live in Gravesend !!!

Wrotham Road has changed alot too.....lovely old buildings gone and horrible things put in their place :(   Going by google, No 13 is near Cobham St.  Nice places, but, now mostly taken by solicitors and other office themes.  Wrotham Road is a very long road from the top of Stone St, running right through Istead Rise, Meopham, Vigo down to the Wrotham roundabout !!!

Good luck......Iris :)

Most grateful.

Have you ever heard of Greyfriars, Old Road East Gravesend?

Edward Augustus Sandford died 28 Feb 1940 at Greyfriars, Old Road East.
That's Edward Augustus Sandford Mechanical Engineer of the original 'E.A. & H. Sandford' Company of engineering works and foundry at the Canal Basin.

Sorry no :(
Depending on when it was built, when I have a day off work, will look through the census and see where it is near, there is some lovely old houses down that road. Sadly, over the years people change the names and the house numbers differ too.
Next time I am round that way, will have a look to see if the name still exsists.
 Take care..... Iris :)

June, you're welcome here.

Looking at Google Street View I would say No.
What period/year is your Bath Street address?
What pub is nearby?

My GG Grandparents lived in Bath Street in 1851. I haven't found them after that.

I looked on the 1851 census but couldn't see a pub in the part of Bath Street they were living

Hello There,

Campbell Lodge, 13 Wrotham Road, which somebody mentioned earlier on is where Stanley Spooner was born on the 20th of November 1856. He became the creator and editor of Flight magazine.

Stanley's father, Frederick William Spooner, was one of my 4x great granddad's. In the 1871 census, he was an accountant of the Tilbury and Southend Railway company. He was living at:

Dashwood Cottage, Old Dover Road, Gravesend.
Here is the census image from Find My Past:
https://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=GBC/1871/0892/0158&parentid=GBC/1871/0013880582

I wander if anyone knows if that is still there please/ if not where exactly it would be?

Thank you very much.  :) ;)

Dashwood Cottage was in Dashwood Rd, opposite the entrance to Woodlands Park. It was taken over by Gravesend Council, used as 'drawing offices' and 'parks and gardens' office; now demolished and built over.
