Title: Astwood Bank
Post by: hmallington on Friday 12 August 11 12:53 BST (UK)
I have a potential ancestor living at a private school, chapel road in Astwood Bank at the time of the 1881 census. Does anyone have any info on this school.
Thanks Helen

Have seen mention of a Boys' School, Girls' School, National Board School in Astwood Bank (reports of Feckenham School Board) but the following advert (or similar) appeared regularly in the Birmingham Daily post from about 1880

EDUCATIONAL

The system of instruction pursued (which includes French, German, Latin and Music) is of the most comprehensive kind.
Good playground, and fields for Cricket, Football &c.

Pupils may enter any time. Fees charged from date of entrance. Inspection of premises invited.

Fees seem a bit dear, they were an acting family but is certainly a possibility, he was a boarder and maybe he came in to a bit of money or a kind benefactor.
Thanks for your work.

A couple of pics would be great if it's not to much trouble, it would give me a feel of the place.
Thanks

Hi Helen,

I also live in Astwood Bank! - Several months ago, I can't exactly remember when - we were planning to move house and one came up for sale which we had admired for some time!.

The move didn't work out despite the house being lovely... however at the time I did look into its history and discovered it had indeed been a school.  Looking at it I think the existing school buildings have been split and are now 2 large  semi detached houses.

I am more than willing to describe them and their location but am unsure if I can do this in the "public domain" as it were.

Perhaps someone could advise ?

Kind regards - Sharon

Thanks again

Title: Re: Astwood Bank Baptist Grave Stoens or MIs
Post by: GenClub Genie on Saturday 01 September 18 10:25 BST (UK)
I've dipped in here very quickly - first visit in a long time. I was looking for the old style boards and Astwood Bank in particular and ended up on this thread. I can't see a way to start a new thread so apologies if I've missed that.

I'm looking for information on burials at Astwood Bank Baptist Chapel.  Does anyone know what happened to the stones when the Church closed in the late 1900s?  Or if a Monumental Inscription survey was ever done there (nothing in The Hive catalogue)?

I'm generally interested but particularly on the hunt for an image of a grave stone or a recorded MI for Joshua Harris, buried there in March 1847.  He was the early founder of Studley Baptists.

Many thanks for any information or suggested pointers you may like to share.

Joy

You've provided a burial month of "March 1847"

Birmingham Journal, Sat 17th April, 1847
Deaths
On the 6th inst (ie. April), at Studley, in this county, Mr Joshua Harris, formerly a grocer and druggist, of this town.

Many, many thanks for taking the trouble to look this up and reply, but its a visual I'm after, an image of a memorial would be ideal but a transcribed MI would suffice, as an illustration for a book I'm working on.

I have found a note on BMHGS' site that a graveyard plan and list of burials should be held at WorcsRO at the Hive, but I can't find it in their online catalogue.  I've emailed to ask them to confirm that it is there before making the journey and if so I'll report back here and will be happy to look up anything for anyone else too.
