Hi,
I am trying to find out some information and Ancestry hasn't answered my questions. My great great grandfather was, according to the 1901 census born in 1878 in Rugeley Staffordshire. His name is John T Ford. He married his wife, Rose Goring, in 1901 in Hednesford, Staffordshire. I found a birth certificate from Lichfield saying 1878.
I cannot find any previous censuses, or a more detailed christening report that would be me any indicator of his parents names to continue finding more on this side of the family. I've been on staffordshire bmd also with no luck.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! thanks!

Hi
Welcome to Rootschat. The best way to find out about John T FORD's parents names is to order his marriage certificate, which will give you his father's name. It should be easier from then on to trace his line.
Cheers

Hi Karenlee,
thanks. How do I get a marriage certificate? I live in Canada so hopefully it can be done online or over the phone.
thanks for answering so quickly.

Hey Sarah
Yep it can be done online with a credit card. Easy. I do it from Australia all the time. They are generally very reliable and efficient.
www.gro.gov.uk
They have a link to their Certificate Ordering Service that is easy to find and work through.
You need this though...
Marriage Index
March Quarter 1901
Cannock Staffordshire
FORD John Thomas
GORING Rose
Volume 6b Page 583
That should be enough information to get what you need.
Any problems just yell...

I have no proof that this is the family you are after, but it might be a good idea to keep this as a "just in case" piece of information.

Hi Sarah
The details you will need to apply will be volume and page number as follows
Ford, John Thomas to Rose Goring Married Cannock 1st qtr 1901
Volume 6b Page 583
This is the listing on FreeBMD
Tony
Just spotted the earlier reply!!

Just looked at FreeBMD for the birth of John and have found
Ford John Thomas Lichfield 6b 471
6b being the volume and 471 the page number and Lichfield being the Diocese covering the area of Cannock Chase, of which Hednesford would be a part, so you may be able to get the Birth Cert from that too
Hope that helps

Just to let you know on the 1911 census he says he was born in Hednesford which is where he was living on the 1901 census.

I have today been to the records office, this is what I found.
John Thomas Ford age 23 Bachelor Miner Littleworth(an area of Cannock/Hednesford) no father or fathers occupation.
Rose Goring age 19 spinster Littleworth. Father William Goring a Miner.
St Peters Church, Hednesford 12th Feb 1901. Witnesses Thomas James Craddock and Ann Craddock.
I didn't have time to look and see if I could find a birth.

May be related as there is no Fathers name on Johns Marriage Cert to Rose;
John Thomas FORD
Baptised 28 August 1878, Moseley Hole Primitive Methodist Later Mosely Village
Mother ELLEN Ford, Abode Moseley Village
(Source FreeREG)
Ellen may have married and John could appear on 1881/1891 under her new Married name.

Hi.
John Thomas Ford is my Great Grandfather too!
I hit the same problems as you and also have a copy of the marriage certificate sans father's details.
I think I have a little more information on this, a bit too complicated (and unverifiable) to go into here but as far as I can find, JTF's mother Hannah married a John Brickley not long after JTF was born and JTF spent the first 20-odd years of his life, until marriage it would appear, being called Brickley. I have some anecdotal evidence from (still living) family members that confirms the link to the Brickley family. Whether John B. is JTF's natural father or not, I sadly have no idea.
It would be great if you could drop me a private message as I have a bit more information on this and it would be good to swap notes. I can also give you some background on the locale if you need it as I grew up in the Hednesford area.

Familysearch pilot project lists the marriage of john thomas ford and rose goring and gives rose's father as william goring. There is also a christening in1878 for a john thomas ford 1878 in pelsall staffs and mentions parents as william ford and mercy eliza.

This family ties in with the information supplied by steveforduk.
In Mar.qtr. 1879 Cannock, Staffordshire John Brickley married Ann Ford.
They appear on the 1891 Census as Bickley in Cannock, Staffordshire:
John Bickley 34 Coal Miner b. Madeley, Shropshire
Sarah (? this is what's written) Bickley 34 b. Wolverhampton, Staffs.
D. (?) Ford Relative (? hard to read) 62 single ditto
J. T. Bickley son 14 b. Hednesford
Jas. Bickley son 12 ditto
Wm. Bickley son 10 ditto
F. Bickley son 8 ditto
A. Bickley son 6 ditto
H. Bickley son 4 ditto
D. (?) Bickley son 2 ditto
S. Bickley son 4 mths. ditto
ref. RG12 - 2221 - 76 - 22.
Can't find the family in 1881 but mother marries as Ann, 1891 as Sarah, 1901 as Hannah and died in Dec.1910 Cannock as Hannah.
If no father listed on his marriage certificate I would suggest that John Brickley was not John Thomas Ford's actual father even, as the census shows, he was raised as such.

Yes, that looks like them. I've spotted that before - the 'Sarah' business is odd but possibly a mishearing/transcription error. D. Ford is Hannah's father, Daniel.
Thanks for your help.
