Hi
Wondering if anyone can help, have searched the burial records for the City graveyard and cant find the people im looking for. They lived in the Hannahstown/ Blackmountain area and was wondering whether they could be buried in the Shankill or Hannahstown Graveyards.
They dont appear in the 1901 census, so I have gathered they are dead by then. Their names are
Denis Hamil and his wife Isabella, their son Robert who was born in 1850 and his wife Mary (Shearer) also born around 1850.
Would appreciate if anyone could look up these names. Thanks
J

Could this be Robert and Mary?, on the 1901 census

Thanks for the replies,
I have now found out that Mary Hamill (nee Shearer) died in 1893 possible from child birth and Robert remarried an Elizabeth Ann Ritchie in 1897 - they went on to have more children - found them on the 1901 census. But still having trouble locating when the Hamill family died?
Any help would be great.
-
Hi Jay2401....just checking you aren't my Auntie who is also doing some family history.
Those Hamil(l)'s are the same as mine. Mary did die in childbirth although who could blame her as it was her 8th (or 9th) kid in 8 (or 9) years.
Which deaths are you looking for?
Robert Hamill (who married Mary Shearer) is my g.g.gfather, I've got a picture of him at home (I'm at work) if you want to see what he looks like.

I don't think the kids of Robert and Mary got on with their step mother because they all moved out and are living together here. Isabella is my g.gmother.
-
I've not been able to find anything on Denis or the older Isabella though. What's your relationship to them?
-
Wow
Yes this is the connection, I only discovered this week that Robert remarried an Elizabeth Ritchie and had more children.
Robert's son Edward moved to Armagh and married a woman called Rose Mackin in 1904, their eldest daughter Isabella was my great grandmother. Therefore making Edward my great, great grandfather and Denis my 3x great grandfather - although saying that my mum is still alive so not so many greats for her.
I found a military record for (young) Denis he served in 1896 different campaigns in Egypt and South Africa, he married a Margaret Keenan, they are in the 1911 census.
Robert's sister Isabella did she marry an Edward Devlin??
Still trying to find information on the older Denis and Isabella, have only found them in the 1851 census and know they had two daughters Ann and Rose and then their son Robert (who married Mary Shearer).
A photo would be great, thank you. Do you know any death dates for the family or other marriages? Went to the GRO yesterday and couldn't track anything down for the sisters since I didn't know whether they married or not.
Thanks for getting in touch. J
-
Hi
Yes Edward Devlin did marry Isabella. Here's the marriage certificate.
-
Where are you now (are we allowed to say), if not you can PM me with your details if you want.
Interested to see if we can track down info on Isabella (the older one) as she has given her name to lots of the family, including my daughter.
Isabella and Edward's family stayed in Belfast and most of us are still there.
-
I'm off home now, will log on later. I'll try and sort out the picture of Robert Hamill and scan it in tonight too (although might be a nightmare as we're moving tomorrow as luck would have it)
-
Good luck with the move. I live in Lurgan, so not far down the road. So who be good to try and track Isabella and Denis down.
Edward's children are all dead but a good few of the children are still alive and live in Armagh. Know what you mean about the name, I always though my granny was called Isabella but from doing the family tree Im finding it everywhere.
-
meant to ask is this where the J.G. Devlin (actor) came into the family, as my granny often mentioned that he was her cousin.
-
Hi J
Yes, JG Devlin was my Granda. He was Isabella and Edward's son.
-
Hi J
PMs on their way.

Hi Tropical
If you think your Denis is the same as the rest of our lot PM me and I can send you a picture of Denis' dad, Robert Hamill.
-
Hello, sorry to butt in but I have a baptism for a Hamill Dysart Taylor at Bushmills 8.12.1846 with parents James and Mary Taylor. My g.grandfather named a son James Hamil Dysart Taylor in Aust. in 1876.
Do these names ring any bells with anyone ? I have been unable to find any connections that might explain the name.

Hi MMCC12
Good to find another member of the Hamill Clan. Hope your keeping well BiscuitTin - need to still send you the photos I got from my aunt.
M - are you still in the Glasgow area? Have a good amount of information on the Hamill Tree, happy to send onto you, including Denis army records showing his service in the Boer War.

Hi all
it is great to finally get some information on Denis and the Hamill family. I live in Belfast. My mum (Denis's grand daughter) moved here after her parents died and her granny Margaret Keenan moved back here just before she died and is buried in Belfast. She didnt know much about the Hamill side of the family but did speak about Agnes and a Cathy Hamill both of whom grew up in Glasgow and i think I may have met them as a small child.
I am new to this site so once I find out how it works I can send you a copy of Denis's marriage certyificate if you want.

Hi Jay2401
Sorry for the radio silence from Cape Town, super hectic over here. Would love to see the photos (and so would my Aunt).
Still need to get you the Devlin part of the family tree (incl JG) for you to add on, will do that.
MMCC12, I'm in SA so if there's an Boer War related stuff you want done I might have access to places over here that aren't online, let me know.
Aghadowey....what's the Rootschat record for most parts of a family reunited on a thread? We're up to 4 at the moment, that's got to be worth a prize hasn't it? ;D

No problems, loads going on this side of the pond therefore family tree been put on the back burner most of the year. Moving to Oz in 5 weeks, so glad to find more before I go.
M - if you reply, then that takes you to 3 posts and then we can PM. I have a copy of Denis marriage, along with the birth certificates for most of his children - if you want a copy. Along with the rest of the Hamill Clan.
Denis's brother Edward was my gr gr grandfather, he moved to Armagh in 1904.

M - I also have the names of Margaret Keenan's parents if you need them. Just checking with you that Margaret remarried as on her son's John marriage certificate it gives her surname as Meechan (nee Hamill).

Hi
BiscuitTin - thanks for the offer. Until I read the chats I didnt know Denis served in the War. I was speaking to my Uncle (Denis' grandson - Elizabeth's son) and it was a surprise to him also.
Jay2401 - Yes she was always referred to as Granny Meechan. She had one son Joe, who was a lot younger than Elizabeth and John, and was brought up like an older brother to my mum and uncle. He stayed in Glasgow were most of his family still are.

Hi All,
I realise this thread is now probably dead. But I have just started investigating my family tree and I believe your trees may intersect mine :)
Robert Hamill is my 3rd great grandfather. My 2nd great grandmother being Georgina Hamill the Daughter of Robert Hamill and Mary Shearer.
BiscuitTin if you have a picture of Robert Hamill that would be excellent if you don't mind sharing it these things are always hard to come across.
If anyone else has any information on this line it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Hi JEWB
Welcome to Rootschat and the Greater Hamill family. Happy to send you a picture of Robert. You'll need to private message me though to exchange email addresses and I think you need 3 posts to do that (not sure if the rules are still the same). Post 2 more bits of info on the Hamills that you have and then you'll be able to do it.
-
Welcome, haven't been on here for years. Can I ask what year your Georgina was born? Might have to get back into my family tree again
-
Sorry for the slow responses i've had a busy few weeks and sometimes its hard to make time for good research :)

Born 26th February 1871
Following that I have her in 2 census
