Thanks Norrie and sorry for not replying sooner!
I don't think there's a Pearson connection there, but I'll look a bit deeper!
As for the Lundie name ... they're connected to the Lairds of Strathairly near Leven! One of the son's of the 10th Laird fathered an illegitimate son to one of the maids and he passed the name down through Granny's line via the Marr name. It's been a complex search ::)
I've got a copy of an interesting book (available in paperback):
"History of the Clan Lundy, Lundie, Lundin: One of the Most Ancient Families of the Kingdom of Scotland: A History and Genealogy from the 11th Century to the Present Day" by Robert Alan Lundie Smith.
Thanks again for you help :)

Thanks for that Norrie and I would like to see the photo please. I sent you a pm in August with my email on it. Also, is there any sign of another daughter MARJORY GRAY who married JAMES MCLEAN. James' parents were Alexander McLean & Elizabeth Davidson and he was born about 1877.
If I get any death dates for the purpose of comparison I'll be sure and let you know.
Regards, Sage.

Using the form below you can contact Margaret Lyle at Dunfermline Crematorium
She can check details of the burial in Beath cemetery, but you must give as many
details as possible date of death name ( married & maiden name ) tell you intend to visit February and can she give you the location of the grave in the cemetery

Hello again Norrie,
I was wondering if there are any Shands buried at Lochgelly... I don't know much about them but I'm looking for -
David Shand (b 1768) & Margaret Wilson... some of their children were
Margaret b.c. 1804
Isobel b 1800
John b 1808
Christian b 1806
David b 1801
I think his parents were David Shand (b.c.1733) & Isobel Gibb
and his parents may have been Andrew Shand and Margaret Anderson
Not sure if much would have survived from that long ago, but thought it was worth a shot.
Thanks,
Michael

Thanks for looking Norrie.
Only recently been taking my family tree seriously and it was my aunt who knew where some of my ancestors are buried, David Cook was her guess.
His daughter, Isabella Sunter Cook (the initial 'D' on the census looks to be an error) married Robert Galloway in The Minto Hotel in 1894 so looks by then David (hotel keeper) had moved into the hotel trade.
His father was an Archibald Cook, haven't checked from where yet and his mother an Isabella Sunter from Kilconquer.
Robert's wife was the daughter of Isabella Welch Goodall Paterson who kept a store in Cluny and who's grave I found in Kinglassie Old Kirkyard. Her father was a Robert Paterson who, family legend says, ran off to Australia. Not buried with her or mentioned on the stone!

Hello Norrie. Haven't been researching for some time now but have found some new info in the 1911 census that has started me looking at my MARSHALL family again.
Do you have an inscription for Andrew Marshall/Mary McLean?
I had always believed them to be in Lochgelly but my searches never turned them up there.
My recent research indicates that they might have been buried in BALLINGRY cemetery. Do you have any details of them in either cemetery?
Many thanks for all the assistance you have given over the years!

Thanks Norrie but they are not mine. I had checked them out before.
According to Fife Council's records my Andrew Marshall and Mary McLean are buried in Lochgelly. I went there on my last visit and found the plot but there is no headstone for them.
With the release of the 1911 census, I have found a younger sibling for Andrew that I never knew existed. I have connected with her descendants and have heard a lot of oral history for that branch, as well as their stories about my own side. It has been wonderful. But they really can't add anything to my search for the illusive Mary McLean (still hunting for her after 20+ years!!) However one of them distinctly remembers visiting, placing flowers, and caring for her grandparents' (Andrew Marshall and Mary McLean) grave and is positive it is in Ballingry! I have been to that cemetery many times to visit my own grandparents' grave (Andrew Marshall and Isabella Stewart) but have never come across another family headstone. I am visiting Scotland this summer, so will be on the hunt!
Another clue from one of their family stories .... the younger sister of my grandfather was called Barbara, as is the recently-found cousin, and when this cousin asked her mother where the name came from, she was told her grandmother didn't like to talk about it, but she had a younger sister called Barbara and both of them were left on the doorstep of a childrens' home! When they became of age to go into service, Barbara went to a family who later emigrated and took her with them! This could certainly explain the difficulty I have had locating Mary McLean's birth certificate, and census details for 1871 and 1881!
So, that's the story I will be researching now!
Thanks for looking for me :)

Hello,
I have been to Lochgelly Cemetery this weekend and found my grandparents stone lying flat......it wasnt down in march 2011.
I need to find the number of it so I can make enquiries to have it re-erected.
The name of my family is:
William Reid
died Dec 1943 aged 60
Alice Reid
died 27th Feb 1972 aged 72
I know where it is obviously but have no official papers, or number and those who will have have now died.
Also I could do with a reputable memorial stonemamson who would be able to put the stone back up.
many thanks
Heather

I am looking for a grave in Lochgelly Cemetary. Montgomery Cook, nee Muir. Died Oct 1868
Hi Christine sorry nothing in my index for the above
I see Montgomery & James married in 30.11.1865 and
had 2 Children Montomgery 21.9.1866 & Archibald 1.10.1868
do you know who the children married?
I take it that Montomery died in Childbirth.
Norrie
-
Hi Norrie
Thanks for your efforts in finding various gravestones belonging to my family tree!
Yes you're right in guessing Montgomery died in childbirth.
Found your comments about their children very interesting!
I have Archibald's birth certificate and, at the moment, have traced him as far as being a medical student in the 1891 census
1871 census showed James Cook as a widower with Archibald and a 4 year old daughter, but named Christina not Montgomery! Tried to find further records of Christina, only one was an 1866 illegitimate birth to a Christina Cook with a grandfather Archibald and I was thinking of family connections and farming out the child to hide a family secret!
Where did you find the record of Montgomery Jr's birth? Wonder how Christine fits in?
In Abbotshall search you rightly found grave of James Cook's 2nd wife, Jane Hogarth's parents. (James and Jane retired to house nearby, why I tried there) James Cook's parents were Archibald Cook and Isabella Sunter who died in Lochgelly( b Dunfermline, Townhill?) and Cluny (B Kilconquhar) respectively.
Thanks again for your help.
Christine
-
Where did you find the record of Montgomery Jr's birth? Wonder how Christine fits in?
Hi Christine yes it should have been Archibald & Catherine
Not Archibald & Montogmery, typing error senior moment
I obtained it from IGI family search
And there is no death on Scotlands people for a Catherine Cook born 1866
Between 1866 & 1871 they must have change it or the census recorded it
as Christine instead of Catherine, no sign of catherine or christine
on 1881 census

Hi Norrie
Thanks for the information.
Montgomery's mother was Catherine (Cook) so more likely her daughter would be called Catherine than Christine. Marriage cert had (cousins) after Montgomery's name so trying to find if Catherine was their father's sister! Still wonder what happened to Catherine/Christine and where Montgomery may be buried, the rest of the Cooks for that matter too! She was born Dalgety and James and brother Davd (my x2 grandfather) Kilconquhar so might be there!
Thanks for info on Archibald's wife and death, will check but probably him!
Re John Hogarth's grave and 3? wives. James and Jane's marriage was 1871,with Jane 31 so Mother tho, deceased couldn't have died 10.5.18. Tho' you did say dates hard to read.
Haven't located many branches of Cook or Galloway graves yet. All Fife except one Galloway I know is in Morningside!
Lucky wandering helped me find two in Kinglassie and Beath graveyards quite quickly and so the search goes on!
Again, big thanks for looking and extra info!

Thanks so much for that its a great help.
My great great granparents were Charles Finlayson and Clementina Carrie they died in Brechin. My great gran Betsy Meffan Thomson Finlayson was the second wife of James Bell and they went to Linthouse in Govan as he worked in the shipyards. Two of Betsy's siblings stayed in Angus the rest emigrating to US or Western Australia. Descendants of whom are now in contact. :)

Hi Norrie,
I see you have 'Holmes' listed - do you by chance have a William Holmes and Alice Allan?
Also looking for their daughter Margaret Holmes, who died within 1 year of being born, in 1934.
Also John Holmes and Ann Reid, and sons William (1932) and John (1937), who both died very young.
And any other Holmes you may care to enlighten me about if there's not too many, because they may be connected.
Thanks in advance,

Hi Norval I have many Headstones in various Fife cemeteries listing
Beveridge & White/Whyte
who are you looking for ? I need 2 names to check my index eg.
Archibald S Beveridge & Elizabeth Foy
Henry Whyte & Isabella Robertson
I notice you have a not very common christian name " Norval"
that is also my christian name, haven't found many of us
Norval Gordon
-
Dear Norrie,
That's a bit of a coincidence - even if there are two origins for Norval!
My interests centre on Halbeath and the surrounding area. Henry Beveridge (whose origins are presumably somehow bound with other Halbeath Beveridge families, but remain unclear for now) married in 1794. And his wife Janet White (whom I suspect of being very young), who may hail from Dalgety, although her younger brother Hugh White is thought to have been born in Lochgelly. There may also be connections to the Blaick family of Aberdour.
Norval
-
Hi Norval the nearest cemetery to Halbeath is a small Cemetery called Mossgreen
I have photographed it and I was surprised to see so many Beveridge stones there,
I don't know if there is any connection to yours, but checking the 1881 Census
a number are coalminers, photos are available.

Thanks for your message, Norrie, but I'm afraid these stones are all too recent.
I should have said that the children of Henry Beveridge and Janet White (born between 1795 and 1816), and also those of Janet's brother Hugh, accompanied their parents in a migration to the Ayrshire coalfields around 1820. Only Isobel Beveridge remained behind in Fife, to marry Henry Storrar from Falkland in 1823.
Is this graveyard what some people have referred to as Halbeath cemetery?

back to Lochgelly to be buried.

Hi Norrie
I was wondering if any of these names appear in your records of graves in Lochgelly Cemetery.
Archibald Cook 10 April 1810-29 Jul 1867 and wife Isabella Sunter 1810-1857
His sister Catherine Cook 1808-1881 and husband James Muir ?-1857.
Their children Marion d. 1863, Montgomery d 1868 (married cousin James Cook and of them when asked you to search them last year!) Thomas ,James ,David 1844-1857.
His brother William Cook 1814-1878.
Any help would be great Norrie. I haven't had much luck in locating graves of people in my family tree from the places you hold records on! These ancestors of mine must be buried somewhere!
Thanks
Christine

Hi Norrie,
Not been on the site in some time, but was looking around the Fife forum and saw this lady's post on another thread, titled "Davidson's of Auchterderran" do you have any information on these?
"I'm looking for the gravestone of my great great grandparents - Isabella Westwater who died in Lochore on 24 2 1915 and Birrell Davidson born 26 5 1857 died Methil 26 2 1939. They are not in Ballingry cemetery and can't find them in Bowhill either so I think they might be in Lochgelly. Would appreciate your help as my mum would love to take some flowers to their grave. My Davidson ancestors date back to 1560 in Dunfermline so any Davidsons might well be connected to my family. I now live in France so it's not easy to get time to hike round cemeteries in Scotland.
Thanks for any help you can give. Would really like to get in touch with Norrie".
I've contacted her to let her know where to find your thread.
Cheers
Bryan

I know my great grandmother Elizabeth McGuinnis/McGinness' abt 1856, parents John McGuinness-wife unknown stayed in Scotland after my ggrandmother married in Ireland. Would you have anything on this family? The last family is Hugh and Margaret Black b. 1799-1802. Any insight would be wonderful as I cannot find any Irish burials. Thank you for checking when you find a minute to do so.

Hi Norrie,
I would be interested in details of the Reddek inscriptions.
Peter (1) 1913, John (2) 1913, both died in infancy, Anthony 1928, Ursula 1951 and any other Reddeks.
Also Ruth Reddek (5) 1935 who died in Dundee but was from Lochgelly.
The Russian family name spelling varied.
Reddek, Redek, Reddeck, etc and then "changed" to Malone.
Thanks in advance for this kind offer.

Hi Norrie
Last year asked your help in locating burials or headstones of David and Isabella Cook of Lochgelly. Have found place of burial at last...in Morningside, Edinburgh!
Family story it was another member, Andrew Galloway, who was in Edinburgh so wondering if mix up will result in him being in Lochgelly....he worked for Lochgelly Iron And Coal Co. and helped found the Masonic Lodge there.
Andrew Galloway born Markinch 1815, 16, or 17? and died Dec 1897 and wife Janet Christie died 1911. She lived in Cowdenbeath when died and think they were estranged in later stages of marriage so may not be together!
Any other cemetery he might be...Bowhill....
As always thanks for any help or advice.
Christine

Hello Norrie
Thank you so much for tracking this down - the little plaque for his sister's grave seems to big to post here so I'll send it to your other address - they assure me they've now cut a square round about it as it was being used as a path! My mum isn't fit to tend the graves any more and I can see I'm going to have to try and make the trip sometime when I'm over in Scotland.
Thank you so much for this.

Hello Norrie,
Thanks very much for the MIs. All look to be for my relations. Yes, I'm very interested in the photos too please. Do you have an on line headstones database with photos? What about other cemeteries adjacent to Lochgelly? Many cemeteries which are run by local government councils here in NZ are putting them on line and so far not charging!

Hello Norrie,
Thanks for the photos. I'm not sure if Robert Sinclair is one of my relations but it seems likely. The others all fit with the records I have and add information in some cases.
For you information the wife of Ebenezer Sinclair (he d.1950) was actually Mary Ann Henderson (d.1962) but is named as Mary Sinclair on the headstone.

Can you let me know if you have a Thomas Thomson, he would have died in the late 1920s & early to mid 1930s, and his wife Margaret Black Thomson who would have died sometime after WWII. I am also looking for their daughter Barbara Thomson who would have died in the 1970s or 80s. It is possible you may have other Thomsons who would have died in the 1970s & 80s because Thomas and Margaret had 11 children and besides Barbara I don't know how many never left Lochgelly. If you can let me know what the inscriptions say I would be most grateful.

Norri, I saw your offer to look up gravestones in the Fife district. I am working on a genealogy for a friend and am putting out a lot of searches for her family. I am specifically interested in learning more about two families from the Fife district.
James Swan, b abt 184; married 12 Jul 1867 in Dunfermline to Norman Elizabeth Chalmers. They had six children: John, twins Isabella Chalmers and Ann Melville; Janet, Norman Elizabeth, and James (all born between 1867 and 1874). His parents were possibly George Swan and Margaret Wishart.
James Hunter died about 1944 married Ann Swan b abt 1869 and died 20 Aug 1937. They lived in Kirkcaldy and had seven children: twins Annabelle Swan and Thoma, Mary , Normant Elizabeth Chalmers, Jess, George and James.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
-
Thank you so much for your information. This Denniston Bell is the one I am researching. Your information is very helpful....thanks! And if you can send a copy of any photo...that would be GREAT!

I'm trying to find information about my grt grt grt Granny Mary Watson born c1800 in Kinglassie. On the 1851 Census the family were living at "Session Feus" Ballingray. I can't find her on any later census nor on SP deaths so I think she probably died between 1851-55. I think her parents were Henry Watson and Barbara Cousin. Her husband was Robert Whyte c1806-1868 born Auchterderran. He died at Bothwell, Lanarkshire so it's possible that he was buried there. Robert's father was George Whyte and I think his mother was Grizzel Adams. I'm not certain that any of my relatives were buried at Lochgelly but I thought it was worth asking if you could help. Thank you.
-
My Great Grandfather Henry Giles was born in Lochgelly about 1853. His mother was Barbara Whyte and his father was Henry Giles. His parents were not married and Barbara later married Daniel Mathieson in Lochgelly in 1856. It's Henry Giles senior that I'm interested in as I already have a lot of information on his son. I can find no trace of Henry senior in BDM or census so he is a bit of a mystery! Do you have any burial records for any Giles? Thank you.
-
I'd be intereted if you could still provide anything on Guild and Bennet.
Grandfather was John Guild, his wife Jenny nee Bennet

Hello again Norrie - it's been a while !
I have tracked this down on Find a Grave http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=pv&GRid=152858943&PIpi=129024160
Birrell Davidson is buried there with her - these are the elusive great great grandparents. Just wondering if you have a photo where it's possible to see the inscription? The stone is in such a bad state, that I'm not sure anything will be visible.
This is quite exciting for me and, weather permitting, I will certainly try to make a pilgrimage on my next visit at the end of the year - if you do have it, directions would be very helpful.
Thank you so much for your help

Thanks for your reply. I have all the Census information etc and would have thought they would be in Lochgelly cemetery. My husband has a photo of his grandfather's headstone, but he was more recent - 1966. Would there have been another cemetery nearby, or could they still be in Lochgelly but simply no headstone?
Thanks again.

Hi again there is a cemetery at Bowhill which is about a mile away
but I'm also checking that but yes your right there just could be no stone

Doing a bit more research, and finding that a number of the ones I asked about seem to have died in Kirkcaldy (even though they lived in Lochgelly). That probably explains why they're not buried in Lochgelly cemetery.
Thanks again Norrie for all your efforts.

Hello Norrie
I wonder if you could help with anyone named Crawford in Lochgelly cemetery? As long as it's not too time-consuming for you, I'd be interested in any names over a long period of time, as the family I'm looking at were there for centuries up until 1950's - Many thanks
Cheers :)

Hi Norrie,
I'm interested in finding Anne or Annie Robertson (McLennan) buried in Lochgelly cemetery if she is on your list. Hopefully with David Robertson but he might be elsewhere. My dad and I are visiting Scotland next year and this would be a great help. Thanks for your time, Nat.

Hi Norrie G, I am interested in the number of Duncan's buried there. My parents visited cousins in 1964 who were batchelor brothers that were men's barbers in the town. I believe one married late in life but no details of the wife. I would love the inscriptions if they are few but an idea of numbers would be appreciated and justify a trip over the Forth to check out. Thanks Sandy

Hi Norrie G,
Thank you so much for your reply. You have answered my question. As I am just across the Forth I can make a trip to check them out. I will leave your very kind and generous gesture for those who are not able to visit. I have scant details at this time anyway. I will look out for you when I visit. Appreciated Sandy

Hi Norrie, first of all thank you for any help you are able to provide!
I am currently researching my Graham family tree and have hit a stumbling block with my Great Grandfather and beyond. His name was George Graham (1883 - 1942) who married Jane (nee Reekie) (1888 - 1937). Would be very grateful if you could confirm if either show on your records and if there is anything for George's parents who were Robert and Jane (either Robb or Finlay?). Dates for Robert and Jane are unknown.
Regards

Hello Norrie G
I'm tracking down the burials of my Page ancestors prior to visiting Scotland from Australia next month. David Page (1877) and wife Ann Philp (1886) both died at Lochgelly, and I suspect other members of the wider family may have done so too.
Thanks and regards, Russell (Geelong, Australia)

Hi Russell Sorry I have no Page Headstones in the 1000 indexed headstone photos in Lochgelly cemetery

Thanks anyway Norrie for the fast response.

Hi Norrie,
I've just came across this forum and was wondering if you have any Heigh's as our family came from Lochgelly but I'm unsure where they all died as my grandfather came out to Australia when he was 20 in 1925 and never returned.
So any information would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Louise

Hi there
Don't want to disrupt anyones search for family graves, but can I ask a general question? As an ex-patriat (of many years) Scot in Australia, I was surprised to see "Loch Gelly, Fife" listed. I have an ancestor who was born in Loch Gelly Co. Armagh - and I never knew of a similar place in Fife. Must confess my ignorance of geography/history of Fife - so if anyone has general information re this Scottish location could you give a brief summary? Could Wikipedia it of course - but thought some "local" info would be really interesting. Cheers!

"Ihave over 1000 headstone photographs, from LOCHGELLY Cemetery
I can supply the inscriptions from the stones.
I have listed the main SURNAMES from the stones
Please supply the 2 main surnames you are researching
eg (father) David Brown & (mother) Mary Black"
I don't know if any of my ancestors will be listed on the headstones but I am researching the surnames Reid, Ferguson and Sutherland.
I am trying to trace Donald Ferguson (probably born around 1750) lived in Inverkeithing and married Katherine Sutherland in 1777 and was dead by 1804. They had a daughter Mary who married Robert Reid in 1804.
Many Thanks

I'm extremely sorry at replying all these years later but this is due to my inability to understand how the site works. This is the first time I have seen your post. I've looked at your list of grave names and I see my family name - McMahon. If you could, it'd be great to know if you have Thomas McMahon who died in Dundonald Colliery in 1869. Hope I'm not too late.

Hi Louise, welcome to Rootschat ;)
If you open a new thread in the Fife Forum for your Heigh family & give as much info. as you know, names/dates/areas I'm sure people will be able to help.

Hi there, would you be able to provide me with info on the name "Fergie".
In the absence of NorrieG for the time being, if you post some names & dates, others may be able to help meanwhile?
Have you found your relatives on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
I could only find 1 statutory death near Lochgelly area, no births or marriages...
Death
FERGIE CATHERINE MAUD 11 - 1890
405/ 99 Auchterderran
OPR Births/Baptisms - 0 Lochgelly - 2 Auchterderran
OPR Marriages - 0 Lochgelly - 1 Beath (close to Lochgelly)

Hi Norrie, I am searching for my grandmother's grave. She was born in 1921 and died 4 June 1942 (21 years old) Whilst she died in hospital in Dunfermline, she did apparently live in Lochgelly prior to this, so it is worth a shot. Her name was Helen Brady (M.S. McAllister) and her husband's name was John Brady. If you have anything on her it would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks, Diane

Hello Norrie,
I wonder if you have the headstone of James Brown (born circa 1852) who died in 1916 in Lochgelly? Don't know if he was buried there or not.
Thank you.
James
