I have a marriage cert. for Daniel Scott and Mary Lee, dated 1885, stating they were married at Tower Cottage in the parish of Kirkconnell, does such a place still exist? was there a church there? or was this a mistake? Mary is given as living at Tower Cottage, any info. appreciated, Regards Del.

Del, two Kirkconnel's, both in Dumfries-shire. One ancient parish of that name in Annandale annexed to the parish of Kirkpatrick Fleming, the other Kirkconnel, parish & village, is in Nithsdale with an old hamlet of the same name. The first Kirkconnel had Bell's Tower, the home of Fair Helen, so possibly that's where Tower Cottage comes in. The tower is long gone, don't know about the cottage.
"I wish I were where Helen lies,
Night and day on me she cries.
Oh that I were where Helen lies,
On fair Kirkconnel Lee."

Tower was an area just outside Kirkconnell in mid 19c. There was a tower hill, tower burn etc. You should be able to locate it on NLS map facility.
