Title: Baptist Record for John Tudor abt 1807 Clyro ?
Post by: MargP on Wednesday 31 August 11 15:26 BST (UK)
Hi

I am trying to find a baptist record for a John Tudor born abt 1807

Clyro Census information
1841 b 1810 not of this parish
1851 b 1806 Michaelchurch
1861 b 1801 Clyro
1871 b 1808 Michaelchurch

He married Ann Sermon/Surman in 1833 both of the parish of Michaelchuch-On-Arrow they were married by banns with the consent of there parents  in the presents of Herbert Watkins and Ann Hobby.

Powys Archives have done a search for the baptism for John with no success, in the parish and the Bishops Transcript records but I think that this was for Michael-On-Arrow area only I believe that there were 2 churches in this area.

Could anyone point  in the right direction with local knowledge of this area to which records I could search next.

Thank you Margp

I forgot to mention that the nearest baptist record I have for a John Tuder is

John Tudor baptized 15 Sept 1806
Bodenham Hereford
Father James
Mother Ann Prosser

Could this be him?

I think that could be him; however you refer to a Baptist record. If you meant a baptism that is one thing, and my previous remarks stand. If you meant a record from the Baptist Church, quite strong in Wales, then there would be no record of an infant baptism. In this church baptisms are done by total immersion on consenting adults.

Hi Redroger

Thank you for your reply, it was a christening record I was referring too, they are both the same in England I think, pardon my ignorance, would you say that he was born in Clyro and they went to Bodenham to have him christened.

Thanks again Marg

Hello Margp

Sorry i was`nt any help.I have read somewhere that some Baptist Records were kept in private hands.

I know looking my lot is like looking for a needle in a Haystack.

One lot of Parish Records from Pembrokeshire are at the Cardiff Archives. Why,i dont know.

Good luck with your search

If I have caused confusion by mentioning the baptist church then I apologise. It was not unknown for children to be baptised in the mother's home parish. Was this Bodenham by any chance? That would be a pointer

Hi Redroger

The possible parents of John Tudor born in Bodenham are James Tudor and Ann Prosser who married in Marden Hereford in 1803, and not knowing the area I am not sure how this relates to Bodenham, and there may be a connection with the Prossers, I already have some Prossers on my tree  married to the Jenkins side of the family I need to check that out to if they are linked in someway.

Hi Omega

Thank you for your input, I am very grateful to you both

Phillimore's Atlas and Index to Parish Registers will help you resolve many location problems. Your local reference library should have a copy, and they often come on Amazon for around £10.
