My great aunt was Pleasant Wells born in Chesham Buckinghamshire in 1866. She married Nathan Reading in 1886 and had four children Ralph, Sarah,Florence, and Elsie.
In 1903, they emigrated to Canada. from then on they seem to have adopted the alternative Redding spelling of their surname.
I have traced them through passenger records and have seen their Homestead file. Both Nathan and his son Ralph had separate homesteads, and I have been able to trace them on the 1906, 1911, and 1916 Prairie census.
Apart from some members of the family crossing over into the US on 24th Dec 1916, I know nothing further of this branch of the family except for the deaths recorded in Victoria. Pleasant died on 24 June 1949, and her daughter Elsie Price on 26 Feb 1972, and both are buried in Royal Oak Burial Park, Falaise Drive, Victoria.
I would be grateful for any information about the family, and what happened to them after 1916.

Weren't Nathan's parents John & Sarah married as Redding? It may have been determined more by the record keepers spelling...
Great that you have found them on census and have told us that, but if you post them we can see the ages of the people we are searching for, and the location... Also you never said who went to the U.S. so that we don't bother looking fort them in Canada.....and are you searching for them in the U.S.?

Just as an example of information left out...they are in Saskatoon 1911, are they still there in 1916?
We have a rootschatter who lives in Saskatoon, perhaps he might find more for you...

Thanks for the information JJ. Sorry - this was my first posting, so will try to be a bit more precise!
I am not sure about the spelling - it is probably a bit of a red herring, but I do know that Nathan used Reading on his marriage certificate when he married Pleasant Wells in Chesham in 1886.

Nathan and Pleasant also had a daughter Sarah Kate Redding b.1890(est) who appears as Kate Redding on the 1906 Sask. Census but then no more, so would be interested to find out what happened to her.
I believe that the family remained in the same location from their arrival through to 1916. The location is Section 34 Township 34 Range 10 W3 and this is the same in 1906 and in 1916, although the name is Loganton, Sask. In 1906, and Perdue in 1916.

They travelled on 24 Dec 1916 and crossed into the US at Noyes. Could this have been a Christmas break and did they return shortly after back to Saskatchewan, or did they settle?

We do have a resource and database for BMD in Sask. but unfortunately marriages are not done yet.

Perhaps our local man might be so kind as to look for a marriage for Sarah Kate sometime after the 1906 census... All we can rely on is newspaper information after a certain date as privacy laws in Canada keep information well within a century and each Province has its own parameters for release within that range.
If Jeffster can find them in the Saskatoon area beyond your 1916 census information, great...
I just don't see evidence offhand (1920/1930 census) that they stayed in the U.S....so perhaps they were visiting relatives in the U.S. and ,maybe even the elusive other sister...

DOCTORS – Dr. A.K. Cameron arrived in Delisle by bicycle in 1908. He served a 20 mile radius of Delisle going to homes by many means of transportation and in any weather when called upon. Two nursing homes went into operation, one run by Nurse Rose Redding from 1912-1940, ..."
There was a Samuel Reading in the same area of Sask, but they originated in Ontario

Now, I don't think Euphemia is connected. She appears in Cheltenham on the 1901 census as a widow, and I know of no Shifnal connections at present.
I did find on the BCCFA data base an Arthur J Boyd as the possible husband of Rose Dorothy Violet Redding. It's difficult to be sure without some dates.
Rose Redding, daughter of Ralph was born in 1913 so I don't think she is the nurse.
I have stumbled across another possible connection with the family. Perhaps this could be the link to Samuel in Ontario too? This is an Ocean Arrival, arriving in Quebec dated 1920 listed by Ancestry as Jas. E. Redding, although on the document it looks like John E Redding aged 36 from Chesham, Bucks, which as Nathan Redding's birthplace, makes me wonder whether there is a connection.
The second document is a border Crossing from Canada to the US, on 24th Nov 1916, also John Redding aged 32, where he gives St Thomas, Ontario as his last address and his brother Henry Redding as a named relative.
There are further entries, and other Reddings with links close to Chesham back in the UK.
I am planning to now have a look at the Redding family back in Chesham to see if I can find any connection.

Nathan's brother John was born 1874 so too young to be his brother but could always be cousins...
have since seen a pedigree file of father John Redding's family and Thomas was married to a Mary, so not Euphemia's husband...
Nathan's parents are in pedigree files on the IGI... John Redding & Sarah Bachelor (A submission & not complete so not sure how accurate any of it is as it doesn't even match the family left in 1881...)

Just curious if you are located in Saskatchewan? I saw that you have looked at their homestead records, just seeing if you are close by. I do have some insights will share them in the morning after work.

Afraid I'm far from Saskatchewan here in the middle of the UK. I ordered the homestead records through the LDS and looked at them on microfilm locally. There didn't seem to be anything especially out of the ordinary, but were nevertheless interesting, as this is a new area for me, so I would be interested for any insights.

My apologies I didn't know you were that far away. Homestead records will brief in nature can hold clues to the whereabouts of your ancestors, as well as family size, farming conditions (hardships they may have faced, fire, drought, etc.), and nationality if not British subject. I myself have found telegrams, letters, and such in ones in the past. Nathan and Ralph did indeed own seperate homesteads but it was 2 quarters sections of the same parcel of land (basically they were neighbors), NE and SE are on top of one another.

Through yours and J.J.'s efforts I was able to locate Ralph and Alma's obituaries from the local paper, as well as a picture of their gravestones from Woodlawn cemetery. As well I was able to find 2 small articles from a local history book of Delisle on the Redding family and Elsie Price.
I was also able to find them on the 1906 Census here, page 15 about 6 households down, Nathan was transcribed as Matthieu for some reason,

Re your posts of Aug 31,2011.The Reddings were my Great Grandparents.Their daughter,Sarah (kate) was my Grandmother. She married Edward Hunt in Hespler,Ont,on April 20,1911.They were both in the Salvation Army at the time.They filed on land in 1917.
My Hunt Grandfather came to Canada in Jan 1904.He sailed from Liverpool to Halifax with his destination was Winnipeg,Manitoba.He was born in 1880 in Norich,Norfolk. Sailed on the SS Sicilian.
The Redding family ended up her also,after only staying in Florida for one year.
If interested,get in touch,would be interested in other long lost relatives.
