I am hoping that someone can help me find more information on this couple I just can't find them . I know he was born in
Ballantrae Ayrshire c 1842 son of William Coulter and Mary Aird. They moved further up the coast to Dunure I suspect after the
death of William . I have a death for James in 1911 in Cairnryan Wigtownshire which states he was retired skipper of a
dredger married to Maria . I can find no marriage for them or a death for her. Can't even find them on the census.
Much obliged for any help.

Are you descended from one of their children? If so - can we have the childs details as we may be able to find them from that info.

Sorry I am not I have not been able to find anything on them except his death he is the brother of my ggg grandfather .
I have all the rest of this family and descendants up to the present day but he is a mystery . I wonder if he has been living
elsewhere and came back to Cairnryan later on in life according to his death certificate Maria was still alive . It was his niece my
gg grandmother who registered his death.

occupation given as a fisherman no sign of Maria.

Is he shown as married or widowed on the 1911 entry

Hello Betsy,
Wonder if James was "out of the country" and missing the census - looking at the census James Coulter of Ballantrae was in Kings Dock. Liverpool (vessels) unmarried in 1861.
There are a few entries on NSW, Australia Passenger Lists which would fit his profile but not definitely distinguish him - James Coulter, aged 23 years from Scotland, AB, travelling London to Sydney, 31 Jan 1866 on the SS Lochiel
James Coulter. Age 26 years. AB from Ayrshire on the Isle Of France - 14 Dec 1869 - Hong Kong to Sydney. NSW
another 29th July 1870 - James Coulter, aged 27 years, AB from Ayrshire - going London to Sydney on the James Aitken

Sorry I haven't got back to you before this I have been trying to find if he might have married Christina in Australia.
I think you could be right Sandra this is more than likely to be him . He came from a fishing family in Ayrshire still not found a
a marriage for them . Of course they could have married anywhere. I do know for a fact that his nephew was also on the boats
in Australia and a friend found his death there in 1906 . Ah well back to the drawing board.
Thank you both for your help.
Regards,
Betsy

Hi Betsy. You will find James Aird Coulter married on 14/8/1875 to Marie Christine Christensen in Townsville, Australia. He lived there until about 1907 ( there is a newspaper article from him then). He appears to have had one son called Robert Edgar Tidy Coulter.
Robert was an engine fitter in Townsville.
Marie died in Townsville 3/1/1937

Hi Mitchnz,
Welcome to Rootschat from me to .I was delighted when someone told me there was a reply to my Coulter post.
I knew James was married to Maria but had no other information --why he returned and lived with his sister I have no idea .
Grateful for the information about his son I have been researching them most of today and found he married Jemima Clelland on 9th January 1906. He died March 1952 and is buried in Belgian Gardens Townsville.
Are you connected to them ?
Look forward to hearing from you.
