Title: Sydenham Hewan SMITH
Post by: Foad Family Kent on Tuesday 06 September 11 12:02 BST (UK)
After 10 years of searching I have finally found the correct names of two of my Great Grandmother brothers who were born in India.

Sydenham Hewan was born c.1899 and I have found a death for him in 1961 in Perth, Western Australia. Buried Karrakatta Cemetery PERTH. On the site I uncovered this it said his wife was GILLIAN SWARIS.
How would I find what he did for a living, where he lived, married and whether he had children.

The other fellow is Walter Mervyn SMITH born 1892 India. I would assume he also went ot Australia.

There's a Sydenham Hewan SMITH living with a Gillian SMITH at 196a Aberdeen St, Perth in 1949. Unfortunately there is just a dash in the profession column for both Sydenham and Gillian. Out of interest, there's also a Harry SMITH living at 156 Aberdeen St that year, could just be a Smith coincidence though.

Hi,

I cannot be certain, but whenever I have found any of my "lot" on the various electoral rolls circa 1930-1954 that are imaged on Ancestry and there's the dash or nothing where the occupation ought to be, then they turn out to be old enough to have retired.

Cheers,  JM

Oh lovely. Thank you. So I know he was in Perth for at least 20 odd years if in the 1949 directory.
I do not have a Harry yet but wouldn't it be nice if it was their son, I know, don't jump ahead ha ha x

Would I need an Australian Ancestry subscription to view these rolls or can you use the .co.uk Ancestry?

It is my understanding that these are available via the Australian subscription.  Perhaps there's a pay to view option on their UK package,

Cheers,  JM

WA BDM has his age at death listed as 72 in 1961 so that would make him 60 in 1949. Retired would definitely make sense.  :)
And familysearch has Gillian's age at marriage as 21 in 1912 so within 2 years of Sydenham's age.

Was there another, older Sydenham SMITH?  TROVE has a number of mentions:

Silver Wedding Anniversary for Edith Bowen, daughter of Mr and Mrs Sydenham SMITH of Poona, India.  Marriage took place in 1907.

Captain Sydenham SMITH appointed commandant of NSW Artillery

Death Notice for a child of Sydenham H C and Amy A SMITH - child aged 15 months in 1917

There are others also - however these dates don't fit with you Sydenham  ::)  ???

Hi Thank you. I also came across them and was excited until I saw the dates.
Sydenham's father was Thomas Charles Smith 1859-1928 Jubblepore India and Jane Margaret McCurley. Been the hardest of any line I have ever traced  ???

Syd and Gillian move to 13 Charles St, Maylands by the 1954 census. And again, there's another Smith living up the road. Ellen at 55 Charles St.

I finally cracked my John and Mary SMITH couple via some good sleuthing with much help from RChatters.  They had beaten my late Dad since their demise back in the 1920's.   Only sorted them out last year.... I had been searching for decades, so too had lots of cousins...

Walter Mervyn SMITH confuses me.

There's a burial of a Walter Mervyn SMITH in the Griffith Cemetery (NSW) in 1973 (age 45, birth year 1928). But there are electoral rolls showing Walter Mervyn SMITH every year from 1930 to 1954.

A family tree on A******y has the same name born in 1905 with the 1973 death but no sources, married to a Joyce Helen. Joyce Helen is at the same address as Walter in the ER.

I wonder how many Walter Mervyn SMITH's there are? And is this one linked to yours?

I would love to think my Walter Mervyn 1905 has a son named after him born 1928 but cannot jump that far ahead. Not sure where to go from here without spending fortunes on Australian certs, I was shocked by the prices.

Sorry that was a hurried suggestion before I dashed off as I thought it was a fairly uncommon combination and worth checking.

Now when I check NSW BDM I see that there were 2 Walter Mervyn Smith's who died in 1973 (who'd have thought?).  But neither is the right one or the son of the right one.
One has parents John and Mary Jane and the other has parents William Ambrose and Annie Cecilia.

And another Walter Mervyn Smith died in 1979 with father James.

regards,
   Ros

I assume you have the details of Walter's marriage to Beryl in India?
I've checked the electoral rolls for her name as well and haven't come across anything with potential.

It's the second record when you search Walter Mervyn SMITH in familysearch.org. It seems to match up but would need confirmation.

Hi, great to hear from you. My grandparents Horace and Ida did have a child that died but i think it might be the wrong year recorded as their first daughter Dephine was born in 1926 and my mum Rowena was born in 1929 my gran having fallen pregnant almost immediately after losing the other child so i think it might have been late 1928. Is your mum called Cindy and your granmother called Dianna as I can remember my mum looking after Diana`s children Cindy and Jeffrey sometimes. I vaguely remember Aunty Eustene as we didn`t see her very often and I was very young then. Grandad Horace came from a very big family - sadly they are all dead now and so is my grandmother Ida, but Aunty Del had 3 children who all have childreen and grandchildren, my mum and dad had 3 children - myself my brother Glenn and my sister Lynette. I have 3 children and six grandchildren and my brother has one daughter, my sister none.  Have got pictures of Horace in the Indian hockey team which might be of interest to you as he loved playing hockey and driving the trains across india. If there`s anything you want to know just ask and i`ll try and find out from my mum ok.

Hello Again

I have added Delphine and Rowena to the tree. I take they were born in India?
My great Grandmother Eustine was born 1895 in Bengal India, father Thomas Charles Smith being in the Army as you know and married at the Tower of London.
Eustine married Alfred Euston Bonnevile Field in 1917 also in India and they had 6 children. One being my grandmother Patricia (Pat) born 1931. It was in the early 1930s that Eustine moved back to England to Whitstable in Kent, (I live in Margate, 15 miles away). She divorced Alfred E B Field and married a Harry Care and had a daughter Diana in 1933 but she never married or had any children.
Eustine died in Ramsgate Kent in 1973 and my grandmother in 1986 when I was 6 years old, so never got to meet anyone from this side of the family, although I have tracked down a fair bit and some photographs along the way, never of Eustine though.

I have a picture of Horace in his Army uniform. I also have one of Thomas Charles Smith 1860-1928 and his wife Jane Margaret McCurley.

I am not sure how to use this forum yet as I've only used 'ancestry ' but Sydenham was married to my Great Aunt, Gillian Swaris, who was born in India.

Thank you

As a new member I can't PM until I have three posts so Im sure that won't take me long as I have a few blanks in my family tree.
Gillian Swaris was my Grandfather's sister but he changed his name from John S Swaris to John S Grose without telling his children or Grandchildren. So I am trying to find out why he kelp this secret. He and my Grandmother and their parents were all born in India.
I need one more post to access my PM ;)

Most of Sydenhams family were born in india - some left to go to Australia and some came to England during the time of partition in India because of all the troubles. Thats when my Grandfather Horace Smith -(Sydenhams brother) and his family came to England. His father Thomas Charles Smith married Jane McCurly in 1885 in the chapel in The Tower of London. I remember my Grandmother talking about grandads brothers an sisters and life in India and my Mum recalls quite alot of it - if you let me know when possible I will try and find out some answers for you. Hope to hear from you soon Ursula :D
