Title: Census: Higginson COMPLETED
Post by: quirk_cantwell on Thursday 08 September 11 06:17 BST (UK)
On behalf of a neighbour,  I am looking for her mother, a Mabel Higginson born 2/11/1896 Hayfield, Derbyshire. Her parents recorded on her death cert. in Australia were Edmund and Isabella. This is the only info she has. There is a marriage DEC Q1891 Hayfield of a Edmund Higinson(sic) and Isabella Page. This could be them? Can someone try and find the family on the census?
Thanks Shauna

There is a tree on ancestry with some of her details plus a photograph, and her marriage certificate to Vincent..also says she arrived in Australia in jan 1896, 10 months before she was born :)   ..looking at freebmd it shows a Mabel Higginson born in Hayfield in the Dec Qtr 1895, According to this tree on Ancestry the parents are the same as you mentioned. I will look for them in the earlier Census, give me 10 minutes. :)

Thankyou all for your help. I really appreciate it. It is all starting to connect.
We really need the 1901 census to confirm it all. I wonder if it is bad spelling hiding it or if there is a story somewhere? I will have to have a play and see when Mabel actually did come to Australia. I dont belong to Ancestry but it is interesting that Woody pointed out that others think she came in 1896. The only way she could have done this is if the family moved or at least Isabella.
Cheers

I have checked UK 1901 census using various combinations but nothing for Edmund 1868, Isabella 1869 & Mabel 1895  ???

Perhaps if someone has access they could check 1901 census for Australia -

If you post a request on the Australia board copy & paste your derbyshire post so that people can see what information has been found so information is not duplicated  :)

Sorry don’t have access to Passenger list but these are the dates on the public tree for Mabel Higginson – it could be any of these dates but possibly 1896 as they do not appear to be on UK 1901 census

Thanks Ladyhawk,
You are very kind to do all that work. It is obviously a mystery seeing there are so many arrival dates. Unfortunately there wasnt a 1901 census in Australia as far as I know but Iwill see what I can find out. I might even play around with the 1911 census. I think we have definately got Edmunds info correct. Isabella being a Page might be a little harder to confirm.
I am most grateful for your help
Have a good one

I've come across these two entries on 1901 census may not be related but thought it worth a look as some of the details similar

Edward instead of Edmund  ??? No daughter Mabel with him  ???

Church Street Hayfield
Edward Higginson 32 Hathersage Debyshire widow Lodger Carter of Stone

If it is Edmund I can't place a death for wife Isabella  ???

Then there's this entry for a Mabel Newton first name, place & year of birth match, a possibility if mother died  ???

1901

Market Street Hayfield
Alice D?/Gonna 52 Hayfield Widow

I thought I would add this summary in case it holds any clues
It is interesting Ladyhawk that you found a Mabel Newton and I still am not sure where it comes from however here is what I have found on the family. The info is from the IGI and free bmd’s which may or may not be correct.. Hickinson appears to be an alternate spelling also:

Thomas Higginson married Mary Hobson DecQ 1844 Bakewell dist.Thomas died aged 76 JunQ 1895 Bakewell. Mary died aged 67 MarQ 1893 Bakewell.
Children:1. Catherine/Katherine Higginson Ch 8/7/1845 Hatherage m John Marriot (1832-1879)

And here is the answer from IGI:

Entry 1: Thomas Higginson bapt 14/3/1819 Hope- Mother Sarah Higginson.
Entry 2: Thomas Newton bapt 14/3/1819 Hope-
              Father- John Newton-
              Mother Sarah Higginson or Hickenson.

Marriage: Sarah Hickinson to John Newton 3/8/1819 Hope, Derby

At least that is one mystery solved.

it was a good find of  Ladyhawk
if we could just find Edmund  and Isabell  on the 1891 and 1901 and even better on the 1911
we might be able to solve a bit more of this puzzle

found a Ralph Higginson
possibly the one on passenger list
" 26/2/1920  M Higginson also a Ralph Higginson is listed "

Ralph B Higginson married Mary B Hague

It would make it easier if he didnt keep changing his name.
One more passenger list in the newspaper has a Mrs Higginson+3 daughters and a son on a French steamer "Australia" from Noumea to Sydney 17/3/1897. Was it Isabella?
It would be good if we could find out if Edmund and Isabella had any other children.
Isabella just seems to disappear.

I think you have helped a lot of people.

Just want to add this from freebmd's

Marriage: Edward Higginson Newton to Keziah Brewer JunQ 1901 Glossop dist.
So I reckon that confirms Edmunds death is correct.  They must have just missed out on the 1901 census. I suppose the only way to know when Mabel left England is to see if she was on the 1911 census under Newton, Higginson, Hickinson or Higginson Newton or Newton Higginson. Have I missed any? Maybe she left after Edmund died?

just had a look at the 1911
very interesting
where it has written how many children born, still living, died it has

Kaziah  3 born 3 living but crossed out below 6 born 5 living and 1 died
there are 5 mentioned on the census only one missing Mary Alice NEWTON / HIGGINSON did she die ???

Edmund's occupation Stoker boiler, Cotton Mill, worker not a Engine driver that is mentioned on Mabel's marriage certificate

Lizzie and Mabel are both working, Card Room Hands, Cotton Mill

Your the best Shilo,
Brilliant work?   :D I think your info confirms Isabella's parents although I havent found a birth, yet.  Frederick's occupation changes are intersting: Policeman, Gamekeeper and then postman.  :o I am not a member of ancestry but I think someone has Mary Alice dying in 1909. Have we accounted for all the children yet? I am a bit confused?
Well done again
Cheers

Took me a while to find it again. I dont know if it is her but it is in public member photos.
It is a picture of a gravestone that says Mary Alice Newton 1892-1909. It is from New Hope United Methodist Church. Might be American?

NB: Shilo's later  PM eliminated this one. It was in America

I think we may have all the children
couldn't find any more unless they where using a different name  ::)
on the 1911 census the question is asked how many children have been born, how many still living and how many have died
I am assuming when the census was filled out the crossed out bit would be Kaziah and Edmunds and   Isabella children which would make 6
the 3 born 3 living would be the ones born to Kaziah and Edmund
hope that makes more sense  :)

your right about the occupation of Fredrick but from what we have found with Edmund I think it is all starting to sound normal  ::)

Hi everyone - you've both been very busy again I see - I agree this family is becoming soooo addictive

Mary Alice Newton born 1888 father Leonard Newton
married  25/12/1909 William Harold Hancock

perhaps your Mary Alice Newton's marriage is the Dec qtr. 1898 marriage Hayfield Derby to either
James Jowett or Walter Edmund Hill

it would seem this Mary Alice married Walter Edmund Hill

1901
Walter E Hill 23 Warrington
Mary A Hill 22 (1879) Wool Sorter Middleton Jennet?
Marion dau 2 Glossop

I'll have more chance later to read through all the posts as hubby & son off to the footie later, have to go and make the customary cooked breakfast now - while listening to the shouts at the TV while England are playing their rugby match!!!  ::) Phew it's half time must go

Hello Ladyhawk,
Your suggestion of Walter Hill doesnt work as she would be too young and is accounted for in the 1901 census recorded as Elice Newton.

Another possibilty is :

Alice Higginson marrying Harry Bennett DecQ 1909 Bakewell dist. vol 7b pg 1607.
And
There is an Alice M Bennett who dies MarQ1911 Burton Dist. aged 21 vol 6b pg 242

Only a guess.
Plus one more possible child to Edmund and Kesiah:
Monica Higginson SeptQ 1909 Bakewell vol 7b pg 1719 mother Brewer.

How come some get to be Higginson and some get to be Newton? Perhaps it is who gets to fill in the details.

Good afternoon everyone  :)

Ah yes - missed that she was on 1901 census with her Page grandparents ::)

Wish I new the answer as to why some have Higginson surname & some have Newton - a real puzzle we may never know ???

I hope you don't mind as there are so many pages & it’s making my head dizzy going back & forth to check on all the info. I’ve put together this using some of the details posted by yourself, Shilo & Woody32 - apoloigies in advance if I made any errors or left anything out   ::)

one more possible child to Edmund and Kesiah:
Monica Higginson SeptQ 1909 Bakewell vol 7b pg 1719 mother Brewer.

Monica Higginson born 1912 Bakewell mmn Brewer She could well be Edmund & Kezia’s daughter you would need to obtain details from her birth certificate to be sure
Sep qtr. 1912 Glossop vol 7b page 1719

Monica didn't marry death 1991 Mansfield Derby born 13/10/1913

seems finding the exact date that Mabel Higginson or Newton born 1895 Hayfield Derbyshire to Edmund Higginson (Newton) & Isabella Page arrived in Australia has not yet  been confirmed other than this possibility
Miss M Higginson on the Ormuz ship. Left London 1/1/1921. Arrived Sydney 16/12/1921 although
FindMyPast gives her year of birth 1886 M Higginson dept. 1921 London Dest. Australia Sydney  - so not an exact match for dob your Mabel born 1895 ???

The search continues on........

Alice Higginson marrying Harry Bennett DecQ 1909 Bakewell dist. vol 7b pg 1607

Alice Newton b1892 still with grandparents 1911  ???

Harry mar. Fanny Redfern

only three names on the page 1607 vol 7b
Did a search Dec 1909 - Dec 1909 Bakewell
Frank Cyril Hill name came up with vol 7b 1 gap 07
checked original the pg. no is 1607 so a match for Alice Higginson

they are together Bakewell Alice Hill born 1892
Frank born 27/2/1886 c 24/3/1886 Tideswell Derby f. Hedley m. Mary Catherine

It's really spooky as I was travelling back through Derbyshire last weekend, the place names on the censuses etc. are very familar if only your post had been a week or so earlier I could have taken some pictures  :(

You are very welcome - please let us know if you discover anything about the change in the Higginson/Newton name and if you discover exactly when Mabel came to Australia  :)

Good luck  :)

No worries,
Many thanks again!
Cheers
Shauna  :)

Ps: Regarding the surname switch. I had a relative who was also baseborn but at least he had censuses in one name and registrations in the other. There appears to be no pattern with this family. I think it may have been dependent on who filled in the form and whether they were literate.   ???  Maybe someone else reading this post will have some answers?

PPS: Mabel was about 17 when she came to Australia so I was told. Don't know if this is heresay or not.

Hello all,

I am fascinated to have found this thread on the site. I am descended from Edmunds brother Thomas Francis Higginson, born in Hathersage in 1852 & died in Sheffield in 1898. I may be bale to help clear up the whole Newton/Higginson issue!! It all dates back to Edmund & Thomas's father, Thomas Higginson (1819-1895) who was born the illegitimate son of Sarah Higginson in March 1819 at Brough, near Hope, Derbyshire. Sarah married in August of 1819 to one John Newton & they proceeded to have a family of legitimate offspring.
Thomas Higginson subsequently married a Mary Hobson, but throughout his life varied between Newton & Higginson. Try looking for him as Thomas Newton & then Thomas Higginson & you will see what I mean!!
My Gt Grandfather was born Arnold Higginson, at Ecclesfield, nr Sheffield in 1881. On the 1881 & 1891 cenuses he is listed as Arnold Higginson, but by 1901 he is Arnold Newton & he is named Arnold Newton on his wedding & death certificates!! My Dad knew him well & he never ansered to Higginson in his life!! Confusing isn't it!!
Hope this helps to clear up some of the confusion.
Regards,
Andy (Newton not Higginson!!).
