Title: Seeking Descendants of Lewis D R Huggard bTyrone
Post by: KarenEssex on Wednesday 02 August 06 00:57 BST (UK)
Hi

Seeking any researchers that are a direct descendant from the above guy. He was b Abt 1895. Lewis D R Huggard.

His father was Richard Huggard b1863 in Dublin.

I have looked at the census in 1901 and they were all living in Yorkshire England. Lewis Huggard served in 1916 in 13th (something)  yorkshire regiment, Egypt.

I have found a little something special in my attic that belongs to him, and would love it to go to his descendants.
The attic is in Suffolk, so not sure how it ended up there.

Thanks
Karen

Hiya Karen,

Do you know anything about any of the previous owners of your house ??? Would any of them have been related to the Huggard family? Could the item have been given to them and they forgot to take it when they moved?

Best Wishes, Chris

Here is the details of Lewis Huggard war service/death

Lewis Dudley Richard HUGGARD, Captain, 13th Bn York and Lancaster Regiment
Died 26/06/1917  age 23
Son of the Rev. Richard Huggard and Frances Marion Huggard, of St. John's Vicarage, Barnsley. Born at Dungannon, Co. Tyrone.
Buried Albuera Cemetery, Bailleul-sire-Berthoult

I will check for earlier references in Dublin and post if anything found.

The BT online lists no Huggard in Barnsley, but of course they may be
some that are ex-directory.

Mike.

Hi

I have researched who has lived there since 1950, the deeds do not go back further unfortunately. No indication of the name Huggard.

The previous owner was elderly and died 15 years ago. The house has remained empty since that time.

It could be someone that served with him in that particular regiment, and when he died in action passed this on to a friend.

It isnt a valuable item! just something that is nice for people researching the family as a keepsake.

The inscription is dated 1916 from his father, seeing as Lewis died a year later, it looks like he couldnt have married so didnt have a descending line.

Looks like it may be well worth pursuing any of his brothers and sisters.

Irene Huggard, Anna Huggard, Annette Huggard, Onagh Huggard and any of their descendants.

I have looked on GenesReunited and none of these names appear. Such a shame. I was hoping someone was researching the family.

Think I will cross post in Yorkshire later today. In 1901 they were living in Churwell Yorkshire.

Hi father Rev. Richard Huggard MBE MA was secretary of Barnsley Rugby Club. He also referreed a match between England and Ireland in 1903.

Futher information reveals that he was appointed to All Sainst church in Hitcham Suffolk in 1926.

So there is the Suffolk connection!
The previous owner of the house his father was a Reverend as well in Suffolk.

So it looks like my previous owners father acquired it, maybe it was left behind when REV Richard Huggard moved to Kent.

So definately no connection to family, so would still like to give it to the rightful owners.

Hi

I realise it is some time since the original post in this thread, but I thought I would give it a go.  I am researching the Reverend Richard Huggard for a friend of mine - she is a direct descendant of his.  I could act as a go between for her if you still had the objects you found.

Richard Huggard lost two of his sons in the First World War.  He was a minister in Ireland before he moved with his family to England, and I have found some newspaper articles which record how well liked he was by his parishioners.

Even if you no longer have the object you found, I am sure my friend would appreciate a description of what it was.

Thanks

Liz

Hello,
I am a member of the Friends of Barnsley Cemetery and in researching people buried in the Cemetery I have been particularly interested in Rev Richard Huggard who is buried there in the same grave as his wife Frances. Sadly the grave is in a very neglected state ( I can take and send you a photgraph if you would like to see it). It would be nice to think that a descendant of Richard and Frances might take an interest in restoring and maintaining it.
When I conduct tours of the War Graves in Barnsley Cemetery, as I shall be doing on Remembrance Sunday, I try to include a visit to this grave in view of Richard's role as chaplain to the Barnsley Pals in World War One and the loss of his two sons in the War.
I guess you may have discovered that Richard figures quite prominently in Jon Cooksey's book " Barnsley Pals" where he appears in a number of photographs. Much of that material comes from contemporary editions of the Barnsley Chronicle.
Richard's other claim to fame is his involvement in Rugby Union both in Barnsley and on a wider stage.
Given his prominence in the history of the town, I am hoping that there may be some way of including him in an ambitious project to set up a local museum on which our local Council are now working. It would be nice if the family item found in Suffolk could eventually be linked up with that in some way!

It would be very interesting to know if you find out any more about the family
Regards

Thank you very much for your reply - you have given me more avenues to search for information on the Reverend Richard Huggard and his family.  I am certain that my friend who is a direct descendant of the Reverend Huggard will be pleased with your reply, and the fact that you take an interest both in his life and work and also in his final resting place.  Unfortunately both she and I live a considerable distance from his grave (we both live in Scotland), but it might be possible for her to visit at some point.  I will let her see your reply and will certainly get back to  you.

many thanks again

Welcome to Rootschat. Not sure what you are having problems understanding about Rootschat but there's lots of information in the Help pages about posting messages, etc. which might make it easier for you. If you have any specific queries or problems then just ask.
Meanwhile, I've split your post from the unrelated thread and attached it to the existing topic.

Dear Karen,
I have just, by chance, seen the correspondence re my Uncle Lewis! I was looking for details of his burial site for a grandson who is visiting the battlefields next year.  Serendipity.
I am the daughter of Rev Richard Huggard's 7th child - Annette Sandwith.
Of course any family information is precious and I would dearly love to know of the item belonging to Lewis found at Hitcham Rectory in Suffolk. Both I and my brother Nicholas were born there.
Equally exciting was to see messages posted by my cousin Frances  We had lost touch with her and the rest of her family and would love to hear from them.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Wendy

Dear Karen,

My grandfather, the Rev Sydney Bicheno Smith, was chaplain to the 13th York and Lancaster Regiment, 1st Barnsley Pals, joining them sometime in or before September 1915, went to Egypt with the battalion and then to France. He was definitely with them on 16 April 1916 as we have a letter from Sydney to the officers and men of both 13th and 14th Battalions, inviting them to an Easter service in the field. I believe he must have been posted out of the battalion in May or June 1916, as I believe the Rev Kenneth Best became its chaplain around about them, and before the Somme offensive began.

Do you, or anyone, know anything more about the padres who served with the two Barnsley Pals battalions? Dates, names, etc. To who, and when, did the Rev Huggard hand over that appointment?

Sydney had enlisted in October 1914 as a private 1914 in the RAMC, despite being an Anglican curate and about to marry, but by mid 1915 the authorities prevailed on him to become a padre in the Army Chaplains Department. In 1917 he resigned his chaplaincy and gained a commission in the RGA, and in September 1918 he was back in France in a heavy battery, a month later being severely wounded returning from his OP at Cambrai, and on 1 December 1918 he died at the military hospital in Dulwich, and was buried with full military honours from the church where he had been curate.

Anything that might point us to more information about his military service would be valuable...

Yours

Richard Essberger

Hi Wendy,
so exciting to get a response! (sorry the website won't allow me to send a personal message) I suppose at the moment I am looking for any information about the two brothers Hewitt and Lewis that died so sadly in WW1, it would be great to find out a little about their lives before they went to war - they seem to have been great rugby players! Any information about how and why they went to war and how they then died. I had no idea there were other siblings, a little about them would be so interesting to hear. My mother remembers a visit to Ireland from one of the Huggards many many years ago. My father-in-law is compiling an amazing history about Frances Marion Huggard's Father - Joseph Lloyd and her brother (also Joseph ) both brilliant language scholars and very important in protecting the Irish language in Ireland.

kind regards,
Darina
