Title: St Joseph's Cemetery, Airdrie
Post by: Chris5856 on Tuesday 13 September 11 00:05 BST (UK)
Dear All,

Im at present involved in a project to transcribe all the lair books for the above cemetery. Ive also taken about 3000 headstone pics and transcribed the details on them to a database. I have details of nearly 5000 interred at the cemetery just through the headstones.  Im building a website to allow access to the database. For copyright reasons I cannot produce pics of the headstones or lair books, however Im willing to do lookups and confirm details should anyone require them. At present the lair books are transcribed from Jan 1860 to May 1864.

The cemetery now features on Facebook

Regards

Chris

Well done, Chris! Thank you for all that hard work.

I could probably inundate you with lookups, as I probably have zillions of rellies buried there. Is the web site going to have an index of names?

Meantime, I'd be interested to know if there are any Waddells or Stor(r)(i/e)(y)s.

Ive applied for a grant to cover the cost of running the website. It is intended that it will have a searchable index and that it will be free to access the information. Im still awaiting word on the grant. As you can see from my website it does not offer much in they way of photos or database. This is free to run, it only starts to cost when I need the capacity to put photos and the database on it. In the meantime, Im happy enough to do lookups in here.

Im afraid I have no Waddells or Stor(r)(i/e)(y)s yet, although I do have a few Black's....

Thanks, Chris.

I had avoided asking about Blacks because I thought there would be too many! I don't think any of these are mine.

Thanks for all the information.  I've picked up quite a few direct rellies.  I didn't have their death dates.  My Quinns came from Donegal, and settled in Airdrie around 1890 ish.

Another year has been transcribed and Im now into 1874. A lot more burials from people living in Coatbridge appeared in 1873.

So far Ive recorded just over 2000 burials between 1860 to 1873.

Most common names between those years are as follows

Quin/Quinn (31 burials)
Gallagher (27)
Burns (24)
McGuire / Maguire (24)
Smith / Smyth (23)
Campbell (20)
Murphy (20)
Kelly (19)
O'Neill (19)
Boyle (18)

Hi there - what an amazing project - I'm in awe of it!  I wondered if there were any Mcfaddens (sometimes alternate spellings of the surname were used)  buried in St Josephs Airdrie, pre 1875?  As I know my McFaddens worked there intermittently, and may in particular have had children who died that I'm not aware of.

If this is too general/time consuming a request, then apologies, and no need to feel obliged to respond  :)

Hi Chris,

This is a fantastic project and will be of help to a lot of people.

If you have time, could you see if there are any records for Gwynne/Gwyn/Gwin or for Sweeney/Sweenie.

If I register on your site, is it possible to search the records?  Some of my names are very, very common and I wouldn't want to waste your time.

Best wishes

Hi Rockford,

Im quite happy to do searches for you, even with common names. I have them all on excel so its easy to sort and do quick searches. Im afraid there is no trace so far of Gwyn or variations on that name.

Here's the Sweeney's between 1860 and 1874

Helen   Swainey   01/06/1870      B      10 Wellwynd Street, Airdrie
Myles   Swaney   11/01/1863   28   B   220   Newarthill

John   Sweeney14/01/1872   20   B      Stirling Street, Airdrie

The letters refer to section, the numbers the plot. First line of numbers is age. and the dates are internment dates.

I dont have any pics of Gwyn from headstones but the following Sweeneys I have pics for.

John   Sweeney
Hugh   Sweeney
Mary   Sweeney   22/08/1990
Michael   Sweeney   13/04/1943
Margaret   Sweeney   05/09/1914

Chris do you have any Mulranie/Mulreany/Mulraney?

Hi Sancti

I dont have any headstone pics for those names or variations on them. I do however have two names between 1860 and 1874.

27/03/1865   Margrate Mulraney   28/03/1865   7 months   B   570   Calder
31/01/1867   Bridget   Mulreaney   01/02/1867   1                 B            1041      New Carnbroe

1st date is death date, 2nd internment. 1st number is age, then section, then lair and lastly address.

Thank you Chris for checking on the Allans and Smellies for me. Hugh is a possibility. I think most of my lot moved to the Glasgow area after 1900.
You are doing a great service. Keep up the good work

For the year 1881 there were a total of 150 burials at St Joseph's, averaging 12.2 burials a month. All were either in section B or D (old railway line). Three of the burials that year had plot numbers recorded against them. 43 of the 150 deaths were children under the age of 15. Of them five were still born.

Hi Chris

Think the Elizabeth Grahams is her in Aitchicon street.Only thing is think who ever was writing the info that day head wasnt all together on the job as he has made loads of mistakes if it is my Elizabeth.Im almost sure its her despite the mistakes.

It has Elizabeth Grahams on her death certificate and that she was buried St Josephs, but she died 9 / 11/ 1860 and was  buried on 10 / 11 /1860.Plus it was 81 Aitchison street not 18.If you look you will see they have even mispelt Aitchison.
Looks like they have wrote the info back to front.

Many thanks

Marguerite

Just had a good look on Scotlands People and there is only one Elizabeth Graham died 1860 in Airdrie and thats my Elizabeth.

Could you tell me where abouts St Josephs Cemetery is in Airdrie.

My niece  bought a new build house there a few years ago just as you went into Airdrie and it was next to a grave yard.Unfortunately she has since moved.

Thank you

Hi Morag,

Just contact me again. The admin would go nuts if I posted updates. I update the years on the cemetery FACEBOOK website page...http://www.facebook.com/StJosephsCemeteryAirdrie.

My family left Ireland during the famine of mid 1800's and settled in Coatbridge. They are all in this cemetery. I retired two years ago and began this project. Its tough going and a bit tedious, but Ill get there. Its taken me a year to do 23 years of entries. I should be finished when I reach 80.  ;D

My family too, McGuigans, left Ireland mid 1800's to Airdrie.

Scattered now all around the western world so I am trying to give my grandchildren an idea of where they come from.

I'll keep an eye on facebook.

Thanks for checking for me.  I was going to go to the cemetery but as I didn't expect there would be a stone, I hoped the lair book would give me the information I am looking for. I have already checked the stones at Holytown cemetery without success and there isn't a lair book for that time.  I guess I may never know.

Well done with the job that you are doing!

Thanks

Many thanks Chris - the first and last on your list are defintiely mine!

Peter McIntosh's wife Elisabeth died in the Airdrie Poorhouse Hospital in January 1885 aged 63 but not on your list?  Was there another burial ground?  Is there a guide to the sections/plots -  I would now be interested in making a visit to see the graves - though I suspect unmarked

Are there any other locations from these years still to be seen in Airdrie do you know?

so very grateful

Hi Donna

Ive not transcribed 1885 yet. Ive had a look at the book and she's recorded as Mrs Peter McIntosh. Died 10 Jan 1885 and was buried on the 12th. She is buried in Section B (The old railway line) and it confirms that she stayed in the Poorhouse, although it says she was 60. I have pics of the graveyard on the Facebook page. This pic is roughly the area she will be in. The grave is unmarked. I only have one pic for a McIntosh and thats a priest at St Margaret's who died in 1889. Im sorry, Donna I don't understand your last sentence?

Sorry for lack of clarity in last sentence - I don't know Airdrie and just wondered if there are other 19th century buildings etc to see today.  I see St Margaret's church has a good website so will take a look at that too.

Hi Donna

There's plenty of old buildings in Airdrie town centre. Your best place to start is the Library. Staff there are very helpful. As far as archive material goes contact North Lanarkshire Council Archives.

Chris,

This is great.  The Christian names that keep cropping up in the family line are Lawrence and Bernard and I have no doubts that some of the names on your list are related to me.  In the late 19th and the early 20th Century some of the family lived in Hallcraig street, Airdrie or at least a part of it that was called St Margaret's Place near where the chapel is now.

Thanks again for your help.

P.S. How can I access the photographs of the graves?

St Joseph's RC Cemetery, Airdrie. The year 1883.

There were a total of 201 burials this year. This was an increase of 12 on the previous year, giving an average of 16 burials a month. Of them 104 were children under 15. Two of those children were still born. The oldest was Daniel McAleese from Longriggend who died aged 77. All the burials were in sections B & D, which is the old railway line. Only 15 of the burials had a plot number recorded against their name.

Over the year there were internments from people who lived in outlying towns and cities such as Motherwell, Blantyre, Glasgow and Kilsyth. The person(s) recording the burials are starting to increase the recording of plot numbers against the names. During 1882 there were only 8 records that had plot numbers marked against them. This year there were 15.

The most repeat surnames were Docharty, (4) Quinn (4) and McGee (5)

Hello Tony, I wondered if this is what you are looking for?

There's a death on ScotlandsPeople for a Catherine Boyle, age 0, in 1956, and the registration district is Aidrie / New Monkland which would include Plains.    There's nothing for a Kathleen with a K.

It might be worth looking at the certificate on line, because that will give you her parents' names and you'll know if they are your grandparents or not.

To view it, go to Scotland's People by clicking the link sancti gave.  You need to register to search, but that costs nothing.    Once you have you'll need to purchase credits, but the smallest purchase of 30 credits will cover what you need for this, with plenty over.

You want to search 'Deaths' (3rd from the top on the left hand menu) and put in Catherine Boyle, 1956, then select Lanark as the county and Aidrie as the town.  It should come up as '1 record, cost 1 credit to view'.  Agree and you will get what I just saw, showing a GROS (reference number) of 651/00 0257.   Click on 'View (5 credits)' and it will show you the certificate

No.   You did say originally that is was 'about 60 years ago' and also that she was taken away and her poor parents didn't know what had happened.
Would advise you to look at Catherine Boyle's death certificate to check the parents names and at least rule it out.

Sorry Tony, the 'No' sounded a bit abrupt.
I've just double checked and there is no record of any death for a newborn baby girl named K Boyle in Aidrie between 1950 and 1960.

Hey don't worry about that. I have just called my mum it was 1956 and on the certificate it was 1956. I am just wondering and pray that it's going to tell me the plot number where she is. Do you know if it will before I pay to see it ? Many thanks

Hang on Tony before you pay to view.   Did I read that correctly?  You mother already has the certificate, or is it that she knew it was 1956?
If your mother already has the death certificate, don't pay to view because all you will see is the same thing    We didn't realise you already had the details when we went searching
A death certificate in 1956 isn't likely to give you a cemetery and plot number.   Take a look at the very detailed posts Monica has put on 'links to Lanarkshire resources'  (first topic on the Lanarkshire board)    The 3rd and 4th post down give you a huge number of places to search.
Odd that, this is the 2nd time I've suggested that post to someone today!

I'm sorry as well Tony.  It seems we have taken you in a wrong direction but perhaps because we made assumptions, as you posted such general information originally, without any detail.   I think sancti, Chris5856 and I were all under the impression that you were trying to track down her death so that you could find her burial.    Your initial mention of 'about 60 years ago' led us to think we needed to identify her name and date of death for you before you could find her burial, if you can follow that, and that's what we were doing.     We didn't appreciate that your mother already had the death certificate.

Chris has done a huge amount of work on St Joseph's, Aidrie and when he's back on the board he may be able to look her details up for you - if you remember, when he was last on he asked for her name and date of death.

If she wasn't buried in St Joseph's then you probably need to approach the cemeteries around the area (using the links Monica posted) and ask them to search for you.   Good luck with it

I dont have a headstone pic for her, but she will have a plot number for a burial in 1956. If she's buried in North lanarkshire the Heritage Centre in Motherwell should be able to help. Their details are as follows.....

St Joseph's RC Cemetery, Airdrie. That's the first 100 pages of Lair book UN/2/26 transcribed. It covers the 24 year period from 30 January 1860 to 30 June 1884. In that time 3,475 souls were interred in the cemetery. The most popular surnames during that period are as follows......

 Quin(n) 52
 Gallagher 40
 McGuire/Maguire 38
 Murphy 38
 Smith/Smyth 37
 Burns 34
 Boyle 33
 Kelly 33
 Campbell 31
 O'Neill 31
 Donnelly 30

107 children were still born. A further 1,819 children did not make it to the age of 15. The oldest internment was that of the widow Campbell from Louden Street in Airdrie who died on 7 April 1872 aged 105.

Irishseeker,

I have taken photographs of all the headstones in the old section. Im afraid I do not have any pics of headstones for the Wedlocks I've named above. I do however have one headstone pic for a Richard Wedlock who died on 2nd March 1911. Unfortunately (for you) Im in Florida at the moment and do not have access to it. I think your right Sancti. Its difficult to make out. It was around 1881 that they stated marking the section as just Lair and not B or D. By 1889 that had almost 30 years worth of burials so they might be referring to sections next to B or D. Its such a shame the recorders became so laxed in detail. The early years the records are thorough and all plot numbers were recorded.

Anyway it shows Elizabeth stayed near my ancestors at 48 Bairds Square in Rawyards.  :D Small world.

I think Williams plot is not recorded. On my excel sheet he doesnt have a plot number. 246 refers to two entries above. However to be absolutely sure Ill need to go back and check when I return home. At his death he was staying in Crofthead near Riggend.

That's the book transcribed from 1860 to June 1886. It's 111 pages with roughly 35 entries per page. Along with the photographs that I've also transcribed onto my spreadsheet I have now recorded the details of 8,730 people interred at the cemetery.

Monthly numbers are increasing considerably. Upto 1875 the average was around 12-15 a month. In 1885 it's pushed past 20 a month. The last few months transcribed has seen internments reach 36 a month.

I've even found relatives I didn't know about. Tedious work but it does have its rewards.

Only 130 years left to do   :o

Chris,
I'm pretty sure I don't have any relatives in St Joseph's, though you never can tell - I think mine were pauper's graves in Wellwynd and others around there.

What I do know is that if it wasn't for you and people like you who are willing to put in so much time and effort it would be so much harder for all of us.   When you think back to pre-internet days, not so very long ago, we couldn't achieve a fraction of what we all manage now, and that's thanks not just to the big companies who we subscribe to on-line, but to people like you.

Even if my Aidrie relatives aren't on your list, a heartfelt 'thank you' from me - and good luck with the next 130 years!

That's 26 years of internments recorded so as to be searchable. A total of 4,393 records taken from the first book, which Im not even half way through.  :o This information has been gleaned from 117 pages, which roughly take an hour each to transcribe and check each page. On top of that I have recorded details of 4,531 names, from about 60% of the 2613 headstones that I have photographed. These photographs I will make available to those that want them. ;)

Hi Chris,

That's a considerable chunk of Lanarkshire represented there. I had no idea it covered such an area and it makes one wonder about the logistics.

Some time ago, you were good enough to look for Sweenies for me. It's maybe a long shot, but given some of the locations could you see if there are any Mulligans from Brewsterford, Bothwell or Holytown?

Best wishes

Hi Rockford.

I only have one Mulligan in the lair book so far. Bernard Mulligan (50) Died 13 Jan 1873 was buried on the 14th. He was from Calderbank.

I also have a pic of a headstone for Winifred Mulligan who died 18 May 1925 aged 68.

Many thanks in advance if you get a chance to look.

There are 3 Parks in the lair book...

Martha   Park   16/04/1869
Mary    Park   03/09/1885
Hendry   Parks   05/03/1878

I have headstone pics for the following Park(s)
Annie    Park   12/03/1990
Maria   Parks   13/03/1980

Chris, what a fast reply, thank you so much.   The Porters always were a long shot, I'm pretty sure they were in the pauper's graves moved from Wellwynd.

I have a Mary Park who would be my gr.gr.aunt, born in 1872 so that is possible but the others aren't names I recognise.   Definitely the 1800s I'm looking for, I should have said.   Mary was born in New Monkland district in 1872.

I'll need to do some digging and find out if she died in her teens.

Many thanks for taking the trouble.

Chris, what a fast reply, thank you so much.   The Porters always were a long shot, I'm pretty sure they were in the pauper's graves moved from Wellwynd.

St Joseph's is a Catholic cemetery, while Wellwynd burial ground would have been strictly for the congregation of Wellwynd Church which was Presbyterian. So, if your ancestors were Catholic they most definitely would not have been buried in the Wellwynd - pauper's grave or otherwise. (As far as I know there is no evidence that there were any pauper's graves in Wellwynd).
If your ancestors were Catholic they would have been allowed burial in the parish churchyard of New Monkland which is at Glenmavis village, if they had died before St Joseph's was opened.

No problem Maggie. That Mary Park I'm afraid, was only 2 months old at time of death, so wont be the relative your thinking about.

Thats the lair book transcribed from Jan 1860 to Jan 1890. In the first 30 years of the cemetery, 4,876 people have been buried in the grounds. I have also noted the details of some 5,154 names recorded from the headstones. That's 10,030 names now available to researchers of deaths in New and Old Monkland and surrounding areas. Only another 122 years worth to go  :o :(

Thank you Lodger, as with all your answers it's much clearer now, and thanks again Chris.   Lodger's explanation means I was wasting your time, so apologies.

I know I have at least two family burials in Wellwynd (children) where that is noted on the death certificate, and other members of the family around the same years and living in the same streets that I'm assuming would have gone to the same churchyard but I have no proof.    None of the lairs or records for Wellwynd ever mentioned any of our names which is why I was assuming they were unrecorded pauper's graves.

I know I probably ought to give up on this now, but you know what it's like with brick walls, you just can't seem to stop kicking...

Hi

I'm afraid I am only at 1894 in the lair book and nowhere near the dates your asking about. North Lanarkshire Council Archives have those books and can be contacted at 01698 524712/274597. However you should try and narrow down a death date of Ronald Moran. Have you tried Scotland's People website to try and find a death certificate?

In the meantime here is a list of Moran's that are buried in St Josephs between 1860 and 1894.

I have headstone pics for the following Moran's

Winifred V Moran   02/09/1910         8 months
Mary   Moran   21/02/1921
Catherine   Moran                          Infancy
Margaret   Moran   14/06/1976         47
Patrick   Moran   04/11/1961         62

Only One Conn in the lair book

Death:28/03/1884
Name: F   Conn
Burial:30/03/1884
Age:60
Section:D
Address: Whiterigg

Nothing for Trouten or spelling variants.

I have 3 Conns in headstone pictures

Robert   Conn   Death: 16/02/1916      Age:19
Helen Slavin   Conn   Death: 31/08/1985      Age:51
John Norton   Conn    Death: 14/03/1986      Age:83

and again there are no Troutens in the headstone pictures.

Hi everyone,

I now have access to details of new plots opened from 1933 to around 1970. This book has all subsequent burials placed in those lairs between the years stated. Which means that all occupants of each lair can be identified. I can do look ups but all image requests (if allowed) must be made through North Lanarkshire Council Archives.

Cheers

Another really starange one... Someone contacted me on the facebook page to look for family in a plot.

One I found was a Hugh Callaghan (38) from Coatbridge, who died on 2 Jan 1900 and was buried on the 3rd in St Joseph's. There is no trace of a Callaghan dying in Coatbridge/Airdrie or Old/New Monkland in 1900 on SP. Even a Scotland wide search doesnt gove me a Hugh or a male Callaghan one aged 38. Ive tried all variants of the name and still nothing. Any ideas why this could happen?

Hi Stacey

I had a wee search on Scotlands People. I can only find two Giavarini's in the 40's / 50's. They stayed in Coalburn. Def your relation as Guiseppe married Helen McGuire. If you send me your email address Ill send you the certificate. His dad's name was Pieter and his mother was Dominica Farri. He died on 17 March 1954. Helen died in 1967. Her certificate is not available online. You would have to apply for it through Scotlands People. The GROS Ref for her is 649/03 0015

Hi Jim.

There does not appear to be a headstone, but she is buried in Railway plot 980. Her details on the log are Mary J McEwan died on the 27th of May, buried on the 28th. She was 36 and was from Udingston.

I have a record of a 63 year old Elizabeth Sweeney from Gartsherrie also in that plot.

Hi Chris,

Many thanks for the very quick reply.  This lady, who died years before I was born, was the grandmother I never knew.  I'm pleased to know where she is buried.

Thanks again,
Jim.

Hi Chris,

I’ve just come across your site and hope you could perhaps check your database for the grave of Mary Josephine Carr who died 27/5/1927, aged 36.  Her husband’s name was John McEwan.

Thanks,

Jim.

Hi Jim,

Ive just finished the book. There appears to be three people recorded in that plot. This is the third.

Catherine Carr (56) 11/09/1915 of 19 Buchanan St, Coatbridge

Hi Chris
Do you have a plan of the cemetery. I was there today and the one by the entrance was no help. I'm looking for my gt grandmother and father who died in 1908 and 1921 respectively. I have the lairs as 256 E and 256 D. Those section references now take me to a new area by the entrance itself which is wrong. Were the sections renamed?
Thanks
Denis

Found the grave with the help of James Hay at the cemetery today. No headstone unfortunately. It's in the east section just up the hill from the railway plots.
The family name is McElhinney.

Hi Chris,
Sounds like a brilliant task you are undertaking.
At present I'm looking for any details of Mary Traynor (or Trainor). I think she died between 1861 and 1863.  Her husband was a monumental sculptor in Airdrie so Im hoping he put up a headstone that would last. Can you offer any help?

Hi Terence
I have a Mary Hughes in my family tree who died in 1860 in Glaslough, Co. Monaghan. She was married to Bernard Traynor who was a Mason Journeyman, Stone Contractor living in Airdrie. He died in 1894. Could this be the Mary you are looking for?

What a wonderful idea. I don't suppose by any chance there is a Robert Douglas McGregor, died about 1911/12.

Many thanks for looking.

Hi Auchencrieff,
This is the Mary Hughes (wife of Bernard Trainor monumental sculptor in Airdrie) whose death I am trying to find.  Do you have a source for her death in 1860 in Monaghan?
According to the Scottish Census taken on 7/8 April 1861 she was still alive at that time and living with Bernard Trainor and their children at 94 Hallcraig Street Airdrie.
Bernard remarried in 1867 but I cannot find any record of Mary's death and was starting to wonder if she had returned to Ireland and had died there - but I cannot find any record of that so far.
Hope you can help.

Thanks

Hi Terence B
Unfortunately I don't have the details as this information was passed to me by a cousin and I have not yet checked it. I did know that Bernard remarried in 1867 in Airdrie.
The other information I have is Bernard and Mary had 5 children. Some descendants of their son Lawrence currently live in Australia.
I can send you the information by private message if you would like.

Hi Terence B.

Apologies for the delay. Ive been away on holiday. I have headstone pictures for two Traynor families that are side by side and relate to sculptors in Airdrie.

The first relates to Lawrence Traynor who died 24 July 1892 aged 43 and his family

The second erected by Bernard Traynor in memory of his wife Mary Hughes who died  November 8th 1860 aged 40. Bernard is buried here as is his second wife Sarah Conlin. From the inscription it states that Mary is interred in Donagh Cemetery, Glaslough, County Monaghan, Ireland.

Im sure these are the headstone's you are looking for. PM me your email address and Ill send them to you. Bernards headstone is quite weather beaten, but it can be made out.

Cheers
Chris

ps thanks for your comments.

Bernard Traynor and his second wife, Sarah Conlin are buried on the slope immediately to the left of the main Celtic Cross. (photo taken last winter) The photo is looking down from the main section towards the railway plots

Hi Chris, I haven't been here for quite some time, but still searching for family. Do you have a Bamrick Margaret, buried at St. Joseph's, died 5th September 1860, and buried on the 7th same.
She was a Wedlock, married James Bamrick, mother of Martin, Mary, and Elizabeth.
Strangely, cause of death was "Unknown", but no RCE
Many thanks

Hi Irishseeker,

There's a Margaret the surname looks like Hedlack, its very difficult to make out, but Id suggest its your Margaret. Died on the 5th and buried on the 7th. It says she was aged 23 and was from Whiterigg. She is buried in Section B plot 64 of the original part of the cemetery.

Hi Chris

You are doing a heroic project!  I wondered if you had reached a William Press, died 17 December 1908 at Brewsterford Place, Coatbridge and most probably buried in St Joseph's Cemetery.  I would be really grateful for a look-up.

What an amazing piece of work. Kudos.

IF you have time or the inclination do you have any detailed data on the Campbells buried in the Cemetry. I have a Campbell friend in Australia trying to find data about the cemetry.

Once again a huge "Thank you" for your dedicated hard work.

Hi Chudleigh

Thanks for your kind words. In 1908 burials were in the railway plots & the eastside plots. Im afraid there is no sign of anyone by the surname Press. I also checked the original book and the name does not feature there either. Sorry.

Hi there

Thanks for your kind words. Campbell is a very popular name within the cemetery and I have detailed information on almost all of them which includes addresses. However, the books belong to the Archives and I can no longer give out lists, which I used to do. I can give details on specific search requests but I cannot give out lists.

I don't have a pic for Margaret. I do have one for a Ellen Bambrick, married to John Devine.  She died in 1950.

In the book of the eastside plots theres three Bambricks, all children. Ellen, Patrick & George who died between 1930 & 1941.

In the railway plots theres a Martin Bambrick who died in 1903, aged 40

In the first book 1860-1900 there are several.

John died 1879 aged 50
John 1880 aged 71
James 1893 aged 75
Elizabeth 1896 aged 70
Ann 1881 aged 60

If any are yours I can PM full details

I hope you can help me. I am looking for burial information on the William Martin family. Some of them (or all) may predate St. Joseph's, but I will list them anyway. They were Catholic and any suggestions as to where to look for their burials would be appreciated. They are as follows:

William Martin (b. 1818) - died August 1852 in a coal mining accident near Airdrie
Jane or Rosanna Brack Martin (b. 1820) - sometime between 1853 and 1861
Margaret Martin (b. 1845) - sometime between 1853 and 1861
Edward Martin (b. 1853) - sometime between 1853 and 1861

Thank you very much for your help.

Hi Toni,

St Joseph's didn't open until 1860. Ive checked all Martins and the first one doesn't appear until 1865 and that's a 50 year old Henry.

Where would parishioners of St. Margaret’s in Airdrie been buried before 1860, when St. Joseph’s opened?

I’m looking for the burial of my GGG Grandfather, John Sweeney, who was a parishioner of St. Margaret’s (and, I believe, helped found that parish).  He appears in the 1851 census with wife Margaret (my GGG Grandmother), but not in the 1861, where Margaret appears as “Head” of household, with no John.

I have found a burial of John Sweeny (conceivably around the right age - but a tad too young) in Scotland Deaths, buried in 1856 in the Old Daleth Cemetery in Glasgow.  There is a note that says “Private Ground”  after the cause of his death.  Not quite sure how that applies here.  Would it be possible that someone who lived in Airdrie would have been buried in the Old Dalbeth cemetery?

Chris - you sent me a message via Ancestry.com a few years ago listing the burials of three Sweeneys - two Johns and one Margaret.  The Margaret, buried 12/11/1867, is indeed my GGG Grandmother.  The elder John, buried 11/02/1864, may possibly be my GGG Grandfather, but he doesn’t appear in the 1861 Census, so I’m not sure that there’s any possibility that it’s he.

Now -  I’d love it if I could get photos of Margaret’s and the elder John’s tombstone if you have them (in Mar 2013, you did not).  Trying how to figure out how to do that.  I guess I’ll have to wait until I post two more Rootsweb messages, since I don’t yet have PM privileges.

Hi there cpone,

Im afraid there is no headstone. The vast majority buried in the 1860's in St Josephs did not have headstones. The earliest headstone for a Sweeney, is a Hugh Sweeney who died in 1916. There is a possibility that he could be in Old Dalbeth, but I believe a lot of catholics were buried in Old Monkland cemetery before St Josephs opened.

Hi Chris, I just came across your project by chance. I saw a list of 'Boyles' and realised at least three were family members in St Josephs. Would you have any photos of these graves I could see please.

Hi there,
Been following this thread and think that I'm related to the Bamricks. My gran (from Airdrie) has always spoken about Martin, Lizzie and Mary Bamrick. I believe Mary Bamrick was her grandmother. Glad I've found this threat because I've always wondered about my German ancestors :)

I'm interested in the McWilliams Land.  My husband is a descendant of Agnes Gaw, wife of Hugh McWilliams.  She is found (age 45) in Airdrie in the 1841 Census with daughter Anne (25) dressmaker, Elizabeth (15) Robert (15), and Samuel (10), both miners.  Anne was the wife of Charles McGuchmann and mother of artist Patrick McGeehan.   Thank you!

St Josephs didn't open till 1861. I have no record of Agnes & Hugh. Nothing for Anne though I have an Ann who died in 1900 aged 55.

I dont have an Elizabeth, but two Roberts but they're both infants around 1900

There no record of Samuel.

I do have a Charles McGeechan who died in 1870 aged 75 and its indicated he had a headstone, but Ive not come across it. Chris

Hi,

I am desperately trying to find the burial location of a relative (my gran's first child who died when she was 2 weeks old in 1946) and I think this might be the correct cemetery, as all my great grandparents are buried here, I believe. I am so amazed and grateful that this thread is still active and that you're doing this work.

I was wondering if you might have a record for a Mary Boyd, died 28 March 1946
She might be buried alongside John Joseph Hughes/Mary Hughes (McGresken/McGrisken) who died 9 April 1924 (100 years ago today!) or Andrew Boyd died 1950s/Janet Boyd died 1910s or 20s.

Any help on any of these names roughly on these timelines would be incredible.

Thanks you so much
