I am trying to find out if there was such a pub of this name in the middle/late 1800's in Hereford, Widemarsh St particularly as i am trying to trace a family member who was the publican, can anyone help please. I am new to Roots chat & this is my first post.
-
It's actually easier to search by th name of the publican!
Have you tried Historical Trade Directories, such as Kelly's and Pigott's?

Yes there was a Inn called the race horse the building was still there the last time I visited although it is now called something else these days. It's in Newtown Road, close to the canal basin.
I think the property is called Karlos now.
If you google earth it there is a good view of it.

I need glasses! It is Holiner Road in 1871 ;D

I would suggest it is HOLMER Road, which is in Hereford - probably poor writing by the census enumerator?

Ahh, bless you all. that's the chappie I am after. thank you all so much. He is my great grandfather. I found his grave at Hereford cemetrey this week, and on the stone it said late of Widemarsh St, so I presumed the pub was there. I am fairly new at this, so forgive me if i am slow in responding! Appreciate all your help x

The Racehorse Inn was my local when I was a lad & I was a regular visitor, at least 5 nights a week (in the late 70's).
The landlord was Richard, cant remember his wifes name but she a lovely blonde lady. My mind has gone blank now as I cant remember their surname either.
It is in Widemarst Street.
It changed from a pub to a steak house & was renamed "The Entertainer" (?) then it was taken over by a guy named Karl, hence the current name of "Karlos".
It closed down a while ago.
It was a large well appointed pub on two stories with bar, lounge, pool room and a large function room upstairs. Towards the end of its life it become a drinking pub for the younger generation and I doubt that it will ever return to its former glory.
My mum & dad had their after wedding reception there and returned 50 years later for their golden wedding anniversary party. :)

Thank you for all the information so now i am really confused as according to Z it is/was on Holmer St in 1871 as that's where he has tracked my GGrandfather too with the census. Do you think the roads have just changed? Has Holmer St become part of Widemarsh St over the years? I came to Hereford on Monday & Tuesday to do some family history & had some success, my husband & I walked up & down Widemarsh St to see if we could gather any info, but no luck. I live in Buckinghamshire so it's not like I can just go there, although we do plan to go again if we gather enough info. I am also researching Allsop & Baynham there. I know Allsop/Powell owned a number of properties in Church St too, well numbers 13, 16, 17, 29 & 30. It gets very complicated dosen't it!? I thought my GG'father had only been married twice but now it seems there may be a 3rd! LOL I think my GG'mother was a bit of a game girl too! ;) I just love it, so addictive, I don't know how i'll manage when i go back to work next week! Thank you xx

Widemarsh Street & Holmer Street are about a mile apart. In fact Holmer Street is not in the area of "Holmer" its in the "Whitecross" area.
Holmer road is less than 0.5 mile from Widemarsh street & is a natural route linked by Newtown road.
Only thing I can think off is that back then, Holmer Road extended into Widemarsh street but at a later date it Holmer Road was shortened and Newtown road (as a name) was added, maybe when Edgar Street was built ????

to Hereford Glynis.
I would be interested to know the name of your ancestor who was the publican at the Racehorse Inn, Hereford, in the mid-1800s.
I have acopy of the book The Pubs of Hereford City - by Shoesmith & Eisel. Naturally, there is a brief note on the Rachehorse Inn. When I hear of additional information, I like to write it into my copy of the book.

I have just come across a picture of 'The Race Horse Inn' in a book "Hereford then and now vol.3" by Derek Foxton. Captioned as being in Newtown Road but indexed under Widemarsh Street it was taken about 1914. it was demolished in 1938 and replaced by the one mentioned by others as Karlos, originally called the Hereford Bull. It is on the junction of the two roads as they are today.
Both censuses refer to the parish of all saints, my old maps are very variable as to road names but show parish boundaries, this location is clearly within all saints parish and roughly where you might expect the turnpike toll gate to be, these gates were abolished in 1870
I think the two census entries are of the same place and this photo is the pub you are looking for, but I have been known to be wrong ;D ;D ;D
Published 1997 by Derek Foxton publishing. ISBN 0 9514081 3 5, your local library may be able to borrow a copy for you to see,
regards Mike
Added, its not that interesting jut a plain frontage with an archway saying Good Stabling so it was a coaching inn

Cheers Mike,
I'll take a look, thank you for your help
Glynis x ;)

There are a number of references to "others born Holiner" it is definitly a misprint it, should read "Holmer" as suggest in previous post.

The Race Horse Inn was at the junction of Widemarsh Street and Newtown Rd. My grandfather, John Cook, was the publican there in the very early 1900's, at the time of the picture in Derek Foxton's book. The book has the publican's name as John Cooke with an e which is a misspelling. The picture shows the name of the pub as The Race Horse Inn (two separate words for Race Horse). My grandfather was registered here in the 1901 and 1911 censuses. the address given was The Race Horse Inn, Widemarsh Street, 6 Newtown Rd, so I'm guessing the pub entrance was on Widemarsh Street and there was another entrance on Newtown Rd. On a map, I notice that Holmer Rd changes to Newton Rd, both now being part of the A49, so I can see why there would be some confusion there.

It is now a furniture shop :(

Glynis - If you visit Hereford again to look for the site of The Racehorse ignore Holmer Street as it's in a different part of the City and has no connection to the Pub. If you walk down Widemarsh Street again to look for it and start in High Town you have to walk all the way to the other end of Widemarsh St., crossing the Inner Ring Road as it continues beyond that, and where it turns left and becomes Newtown Road that is where The Racehorse was. Being on the corner it had entrances on both Widemarsh St. and Newtown Road. Newtown Road soon becomes Holmer Road (not Holmer Street) at a mini-roundabout, which is probably how the confusion arose.
The old pub and two adjacent houses were bought by Flowers Brewery in the 1930's who demolished them all and cleared the site for the erection of a palatial new "The Racehorse" which opened in 1938/39. As Red Mike says, this has very recently become a Furniture shop.
Hope this is helpful.

Hi There
Im no expert on the street of Hereford but I do remember when my parents used to take me to Hereford races (we lived in Kidderminster at the time & it was my late Dad was the one very keen on the horses) & I do remember that in town there was a pub called the Race Horse & there was also a pub called the Starting Gate which was a little way out of town by the road that led to the Tattersalls ring on the racecourse
All the very best
Phil
ps this would be about 50 years ago if that's any help at all

You are correct. Funnily enough, the Starting Gate (Now a Beefeater) is at the very top end of the Holmer Road that has been mentioned previously in this thread.
The Race Horse pub is on the corner of Widemarsh Street and Newtown Road (On the mini-Roundabout. Newtown Road then leads into Holmer Road.
I've known the Race Horse as The Hereford Bull, The Entertainer, Karlo's, The Hereford Bull again and The Racehorse, though not in that order probably! It's last use as a pub was a pool club as much as a pub, Karlo's.

Yes Glynis there was a RaceHorse Inn in 1851 according to Shoesmith and Eisels Book "The Pubs of Hereford City". It is on an OS map published in 1888 at the junction of Wiemarsh Street, Newtown Road and Burcot Road. Interesting map showing the Hereford Gloucester Canal near the pub. Map is online under Old Maps.

Frank Powell used to keep the Race Horse in Widemarsh St in the 1950s. He was a friend of my father. Anyone any memories of Frank and his family?
