Thank you all for your help and sorry for the duplicate post - wasn't sure where to post as just a beginner with family research.
Not sure how to understand army records as all records I've found seem to date after his arrival (1869) in Australia.

It is definitely Salford, near Manchester (Lancashire), England.
Both battalions of the 9th Regiment were in the Ionian Islands in the 1860s. They left together for Gibraltar in June 1864. The 2nd Battalion went to China (later Japan) at the end of 1864. That may be the source of the ‘Boxer’ story. He would have been too old for the Boxer Rebellion of 1900, and also for the (2nd) Boer War around the same time. The 9th Regiment were not involved in the 1st Boer War of 1881. And they do not appear to have served in Australia in his time. So either history has become a bit muddled, or he transferred to another regiment, or went after being discharged
I also could not find him in the Crimea medal rolls, but he is likely to have been too young for that.

Thank you so much Ken, I'm sure you've found the right record, this is wonderful.
Do you know where I can find more on
RE: "They left together for Gibraltar in June 1864. The 2nd Battalion went to China (later Japan) at the end of 1864."
I was beginning to think I'd never find him (my gg grandfather) or if the family story that was passed down had any truth to it or not!!
The story goes their first child, a daughter was born in China but they lost her, something to do with taking a wall???
The next child a son was born in Japan about 1868. He was 1 year old when they arrived in Australia.
Do you know of anyone being granted land by the Queen for their service? As that was another part of the story handed down that I can't find anything about?

Can anyone help with information on:
Unit 2nd Btn 9th Foot East Norfolk
Also:
How do I access this record at National Archives reference: WO12 / 2732
-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/9th_(East_Norfolk)_Regiment_of_Foot
9th Regiment of Foot became The Norfolk Regiment eventually
If you open up the NA catalogue for WO12/2732
Then click on the "viewing and ordering" info you should be taken to a link where you can order the documents..unsure on cost or timeline though.

Message for Lonedogmedicinewoman
John Edward Butterfield is on my family tree and I found this thread fascinating. I have an interest in both his sisters Jane and Sarah. Do you know anything about them? They both married a Lambert and I am interested in Jane's son Joseph Augustus Lambert who emigrated to Australia with his parents in 1848. I have a puzzle. Joseph married twice but had 9 children with his mistress Jane Sutton. He didn't marry her until his second wife died. In those days it would have been so hard for Jane to bring up 9 children as a single woman and be a mistress too (the family all knew about her). Why didn't he marry her when he had the chance after his first wife died?
