I'm looking for information on Thomas Lang b. 19 Jul 1861 in Sprouston, Roxburghshire, Scotland. He moved to Londonderry and married Mary Ann McElroy from Bushmill, Antrim in 1885. He was a partner in Kerr, Lang and Jackson, seed merchants and implement agents on the Strand in Londonderry and lived with his family in Londonderry as late as 1912 (signed the Ulster Covenant with address 79A Foyle Rd). His wife and four of her children were buried in the City Cemetery in Londonderry but he is not buried there. There has been some suggestion that he may have left Mary Ann for another woman, but this is unconfirmed. I have no idea whether he left Ireland or lived out his remaining days there.

Here's the family in 1911 census-

and in 1901-

Thanks. I should have noted that I did have the 1901 and 1911 Census information.
-
I posted the links to save others from checking for the same records :)
-
OK , thanks

I am Norman Lang, Thomas was my grandfather, we never got to know the circumstances of his leaving.
I am the son of Walter Lang

I looked around briefly, hoping I could spot something you don't know
A tree exists owned by a ‘Duncan” contains Thomas Lang b 1861 Roxborough, Roxburgh... its located on http://www.GenesReunited.co.uk/tree/results/lang/thomas?memberkey=0&yearofbirth=1861&yearofbirthrange=0. To find out more I think you have to become a member to contact him.
So Thomas was 24 when he married., and was married 25 years by 1911 Any clues about his scottish background. Could he have gone back there. If he had had a sudden death away from home, and he was identified where would it be registered eg GRONI Belfast or Dublin
Its surprising his oldest son Thomas or daughter Dinah didn’t know what happened to him
His company Kerr Lang and Jackson seed merchants
in 1918 Strand road, name unchanged so they must have stayed in contact? Do any company records survive? see www.lennonwylie.co.uk
In 1918 street directory there is a Thomas Lang living in Gartylough, Cavan see www.lennonwylie.co.uk
If he went to England, there are many Thomas Lang deaths reported after 1912 in http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
If he emigrated, there was a Lang Thomas 1863 — 1912 New York City Passenger Lists, 1820-1957 — recorded in http://search.findmypast.co.uk/results/world-records-in-travel-and-migration?firstname=thomas&firstname_variants=true&lastname=lang&eventyear=1917&eventyear_offset=5&_page=1 Birth year 2 years out is possible, to make out he is under 50 for some reason
He is not buried in Belfast ‘s http://www.belfastcity.gov.uk/community/burialrecords/burialrecords.aspx
WW1 medal rolls have 44 listed Thomas Lang in http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/results/r?_col=200&_cr1=WO+372&_hb=tna&_dt=M&_fn=thomas&_ln=lang&search=r&Refine+subjects=Refine
has anyone tried for his death in the National Records of Scotland

Death would have been registered wherever the death took place. Perhaps you are thinking about overseas deaths? (Find My Past have database but not all foreign deaths were registered)
-
Wonder if this could be him? (only Thomas Lang death in GRONI database from 1911 until 1961)
Death: Thomas Lang, age 80, died 22 Nov.1947 Newtownards district (Newtownards sub-district)
-
Thomas was born 1861, that would make him 86 in 1947! could the reported age at death be incorrect?
-
Not uncommon for age to be incorrect. Here's a bit more-
Lang Thomas William of Glenkeen Bellevue Avenue Carnalea county Down retired merchant died 22 November 1947 at the Ards District Hospital Newtownards in said county Probate Belfast 24 May [1948] to Hugh Michael Turrettin Heron solicitor and Hugo Thompson manager. Effects £3156 14s. 6d.
-
Looks like this may be a different Thomas Lang-
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Monaghan/Newbliss/Newbliss_Town/805447
Lang Margaret Ann of 75 Ashley Avenue Belfast spinster died 1 January 1941 Administration Belfast 12 March to Thomas William Lang retired merchant. Effects £111 8s. 8d.
-
Yes definately a different Thomas.
-
I meant has anyone yet searched the irish registration addresses thoroughly for his death leaving out Derry pre 1921 and post 1921, even his will etc. A collection of negatives answers is as good as positive in his circumstance, back to you all.
-
I searched for 'Thomas Lang' death 1911-1961 in GRONI's database (see reply #9) and the 1947 death was the only result.
-
An online family tree gives this as his death- 1936 Galway:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FTKP-5Q9
Same tree gives address as 41 Clooney Terrace, L'derry on son Norman's 1915 enlistment papers
-
Do you have his wife's death cert ?
When & where did she die ?
Do you have the cert ?
Does it say she was a widow or married on it ?
Tara
-
Thanks, the entry on his death in Galway is correct, I had in the past located a Thomas Lang in Galway
but due to a PC disaster lost the information.
-
When I try the url for the family tree I get an Ireland Civil Registration Index page for Thomas Lang, not a family tree. The page I go to has no address listed. What am I missing?
-
The link I posted is for the death registration which matches up to the online tree.
-
Where do I find the online tree?
-
There are at least 2 on Ancestry- one much sketchier than the other.
-
OK - thought you were talking about tree on Family Search.
