Hi,
Recently got a new PC (Windows 7).
I'm not too clever at the tech bits and although I've managed to transfer my documents /pictures etc o.k , I'm not able to view some of them because I need the DjVu viewer to do so.
The trouble is that I've been looking at the DjVu sites on the Web but there are so many that I'm baffled as to which one would be safe to download.
Any suggestions please?
Barbara.

Try the one from the Find My Past website as you should have any issues with it, I never have:

www.caminova.net
Thats the one that is on the PRONI website...public records office northern ireland.

If you are using an effective virus checker and internet security programme, you should not need to worry about downloading, because any 'dodgy' downloads would be intercepted.

Hi all,
Allanb & siledee, thanks for the links to the sites.
I've looked at both but I can't make out if the DjVU Viewer is compatible with Windows 7?
Nick, thanks for putting my mind at rest regarding the safety of downloading, I've got Norton so it should be O.K.
Cheers
Barbara.

DjVU Libre works fine with Windows 7 :)
-
Hi Nick, bear with me please.
What is DjVU Libre, is it an advanced programme?
Also, after looking at the description of DjVU download on the 'Find my past ' link, it would appear that I need to download Adobe Flash player in the first instance, is that correct?
These must appear to be real 'Noddy' questions but I'm not that experienced in the art of downloading programmes.
Thanks
Barbara.

If you go to http://djvu.org/resources/ there are 3 different DjVU viewers.....
1. Lizardtech Official DjVu Browser Plug-in (Free - Win/Mac) - a browser plugin.
2. DjVuLibre DjView (Free - Unix/Linux/Win/Mac) - a stand-alone viewer for viewing files
3. WinDjView and MacDjView Desktop Viewers (Free - Win/Mac) - another stand-alone viewer.
I downloaded and tried DjVuLibre and it's OK with Windows 7. The browser plugin works with Windows 7 - they say it does.

Another possibility is to use IrfanView with the plug-ins package. Then you can can look at all your images using the same viewer.
There is a short description of IrfanView here:
Topic: Adding images to Posting & Profiles
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,130922.0.html
To change the size and format you need a graphics program.
The easiest, for this sort of stuff, is IrfanView, which is FREE and
you can download from: http://www.irfanview.com/
(==> TIP: While you're at it, download the plug-ins as well.
One of them is for Djvú, which is handy for looking at GRO images !)
(ps. Mac-Users: Sorry, but I have no experience with a Mac, so I can't offer any advice for it)

Hi Nick, thanks for the explanation, it always helps.
I think No 1. Lizardtech Official DjVu Browser Plug-in (Free - Win/Mac) - a browser plugin is the one I had on my Windows XP so I'll probably go for that.

Hello Bob, thanks for your interest,
I've just looked at the Irfanview site you gave me, which seems like a good idea, but I'm unsure which to pick from the list shown.
Daft question : What exactly is a 'plug-in' please ? An additional facility?
Barbara.

Any site will do for downloading, so just pick the first one, CNET.
Daft question : What exactly is a 'plug-in' please ? An additional facility?
Yes, that's right. Not everybody needs some of the more exotic formats, so they are put in the optional "plug-in". As the name implies, you "plug" it "in" to your existing program.

The plug in is for your browser, so you can see DjVU images on websites.

Not 100% accurate: plug-ins can be written for any program, not just a browser.
The plug-in I mentioned is for the program IrfanView, but having said that, if you enter djvu plugin firefox in your search engine you can also find a browser plug-in, which gives you what Nick is saying.

Hi
I'm not even sure I'm on the right board for this as it's not an area I use very often. ???
Even so, I'm hoping some kind person will help me out!
I've always saved census images both from the 1911 site and from FindMyPast, the improved them and removed the black border to save ink and enlarge them.
Now I'm finding I can't open them from my computer. It's the type of file. Other file types open okay. I've done this loads of times before.
I can get the ones from the 1911 site again, but the same thing happens to the new copies.
The FindMyPast ones are already on the computer and flashdrives.
One thing I'm wondering is whether I had a separate viewer saved on my main computer which I don't have on here. (I'm away from time for a long stretch. My main computer was awaiting attention and I just got a netbook).
If you think that's the case, would anyone know where I can get the viewer? I can'y see a button on the 1911 site.
Thank you for reading.
Best wishes
Emms :)

Hi
After a bit of discussion and a bit of a play with this, I've realised that this is a djvu file. I think they're usually from the censuses.

I download census images, but I've never heard of "djvu" files before:

Hi Emms,
I've merged your topic with this one from last week, as it is essentially the same problem.
There are two possibilities mentioned here, a browser plug-in, or an IrfanView plug-in.
Good luck,
Bob

Hi Bob
Thank you for finding the othyer post andlinking. That's great!
Thank you all round for the good advice too.
Now I see your replies I remember the Lizard tech program from before. I guess it was on the other computer. I remember now being prompted to download a free copy but this doesn't seem to be happening this time.
I'll go for that one as I've seen it before and let you know how I get on!
Thank you so much for all the advice.
Best wishes
Emms :) :) ;) :)
