Title: William AYLETT - Convict
Post by: jenay on Wednesday 21 September 11 04:09 BST (UK)
The first of my surname to arrive in Australia was a transported convict, William John Aylett, born 1826 Thundridge(?) Herts. He arrived in Van Diemans Land (now Tasmania) on the Mt Stewart Elphinston in 1845.  Is anything known about the family in England?  I don't know where he was tried and convicted, can anybody advise me on where would be the best place to start looking?

Hi Jenay,

Welcome to Rootschat.

Have you tried the Tasmanian Archives online for information about your chap, including his convict records?

http://www.archives.tas.gov.au/nameindexes hopefully this should show where he was tried, what the charges were, and his sentence, as well as a physical description and much more...

The ship left London 7 March 1845, so perhaps there's some UK based RChatters who can find him in 1841.

Do you have the names for his parents?
I can see from one of the various online indexes that the Tasmanian Archives holds a submitted record giving details for his 1853 marriage and his children.

Cheers,  JM

Wow, thanks Trish and majm - were you just hanging around your computers waiting to pounce on obscure questions?  I have some stuff from Tasmanian convict records, but this is much more detail than I had.  Interesting that although William was only transported for 7 years, Mother England didnt bring him home again at the end of his sentence.  I wonder how many transportees made it back?

I have another couple of convicts to track if you're looking for things to look up!

Have you tried HALS at Hertford.  If born in Thundridge, you may find a report of the trial in the Herts Mercury or the archives section may even have the full trial report.  Think some records show name as Aylett and others Aylott.  There were Aylotts at Albury, Herts.  James Aylott and his wife Ann and two children Sarah and John were bounty immigrants on the Robert Small, May 1856.  Think there may have been a Thomas Aylott and family too but cant find my reference at present.

I am not sure whether any actually returned to the UK.  Even when they got their ticket of leave they had to get permission to marry.  We do have one that was sentenced to transportation but it seems feasible that he may have received a reprieve as he is in later UK census returns.  But perhaps as he was already married he saved his fare to return to his family.

Hope this helps

Thank you benzon and Ray - William didn't return to England, he married the daughter of convicts and settled down to produce 11 children.  I wouldn't think many convicts could have afforded the fare for passage from Australia back to the to UK.

Re the other convicts - I'll start you off gently, with the ones I have information on.  William's parents-in-law were:
Samuel Hite b approx 1801, Colmworth Beds.  Convicted for term of life Bedford Assizes (possibly burglary, don't know year or circumstances). Arrived Van Diemans Land 21/10/1821, on Malabar from Gravesend.

Mary Ann Pendrill b either 1815 or 1823, don't know where. Convicted Central Criminal Court to term of 7 years, don't know what crime.  Arrived VDL 25/4/1836 on Arab II (a female convict ship).

Samuel and Mary Ann married 10/7/1837. On the consent to marry document Samuel is named as a free man.

Anything to pad out these bare facts would be appreciated.

Benzon, what is HALS?

Hi Ray,
Only because I did find an earlier date for her birth.  However, If she was aged 20 at her trial in England, the later date for her birth must be the correct one.

Here's something interesting - I was having a bit of a look at Samuel's background, and I found something indicating that his father had also been transported.  I havent followed it up yet.  James Hytt  (different spelling to Samuel's) christened Colmworth Beds 24/4/1776, married Ann Stringer 27/3/1795, committed to Bedford Gaol charged with sheep stealing, found guilty 24/7/1805, sentenced to death, reprieved to life.
Sent to the hulks at Woolwich.

HI

"However, If she was aged 20 at her trial in England, the later date for her birth must be the correct one."

Surely you mean earlier = 1815, not later = 1823?

May I also suggest that the surname "Hyatt" is included?

Was Mary Ann a twin? Brother Hepsibah (or similar spelling)?

Hi Ray,
Yes, sorry - you are correct.  More haste less speed as my mother always said.
I would think any spelling variants would be possible, just that Hytt was the other  one I saw.
I don't know anything about Mary Ann's life pre-transportation.

The Herefordshire website is really good, I don't think any of our local councils have anything like that.

Thank you, Sylvia.  Did you also find that the poor boy was transported for stealing two beehives?  Harsh justice.

Hi

Please have a look at my website www.carolaylett.tribalpages.com regarding the parents, grandparents and greatgrandparents of your William Aylett.

I have been to the Hertfordshire Records Office.  There does seem to be some confusion on this post regarding the Hertfordshire connection and some people are going in the wrong direction!

With kindest regards, Carol Burman  8)

Hi Carol

Please identify any confusion specifically.
It saves an awful lot of potential duplication of wasted effort if all are having to work thru it.

Thanks

Ray

Hi Ray

I have read the posts and realised some of the references where towards the Hite family - my mistake.

However there is a mention of linking these Aylett's to Albury, Hertfordshire which I have often seen on www.ancestry.com.  Whilst I am not suggesting this is totally incorrect I have not found any evidence of this whilst investigating at the Hertfordshire Office.  However as Albury is nearby,  it cannot be discounted.   I can establish the line to William Aylett/Aylott/Alet and Mary Secole who married 1774 in Standon, Hertfordshire with confidence and currently working on establishing concrete evidence of his parents being John Aylett/Ayot/Alet and Mary Odell who married in Standon, Hertfordshire 1750.

From the convict William Aylett - son of James Aylett (bc1802) and Hannah Aley - son of James Aylett (bc 1775) and Elizabeth Aspitall - son of William Aylett/Aylott (bc1753) and Mary Sedcole - possibly the son of John Alet and Mary Odell.  I have attached a copy of the marriage certificate of William Aylett and Mary Sedcole.

On www.ancestry.com however some people are stating that William Aylett born c1753 Standon is the son of William Aylott and Mary Berry from Walkern, Hertfordshire.  At present I would not concur with this theory.
I hope you don't mind me airing my opinion and would apologise for my earlier mistake!

Happy New Year, Carol

Hi Carol

I was not saying that these Ayletts/Aylotts had any connections to the Albury lot .... just purely pointing out that there were also Aylotts in Albury in case a wider search of the area might be required.

Hi there. His cousin James Aylett of very similar age was transported to VDL  in 1841 on the Tortoise

On boarding the ship, his name was mis-written as Elliot. I had a geneologist research this and it took some doing.
William and James were in court several times for Grand Larceny.  Usually Chelmsford Court.  I have a record of this but need to work out how to upload!!

He was sentenced to ten years and on leaving, went to Melbourne.  I'm not sure whether he re-assumed to Aylett name

I am an Aylett from the Essex/Herts area.  It was hard at first forming our tree as there are lots of Williams, James Isaacs and Henry Ayletts.

I hadn't found this site until this evening!! Still really excited as often Aylett is met with a blank look!
