I don’t know what archives exist in Bedfordshire, but here goes ....
I’m trying to find the marriage of Mary Ann Sharman (born 1856) – most likely in Shillington in the 1880s. FreeBMD gives more than one possibility in Ampthill district. MAS was with her stepfather, Samuel David Simkins and her mother, also Mary Ann, in Shillington in 1881. However, I can’t find her thereafter. All details from the register entry could well be useful.

Did not take place in Shillington, went thru the R/R today.

Hi Sherlock...
How does this sit with any other info you may have on the family.
Is her mother Mary Simkins....nee March....and was she previously married to Charles Sharman?
If so thats where the middle name comes from for the son of Samuel Simkins & Mary ..Frederick March Simkins.
Now checking the Bedfordshire marriages I can I think now right them all off as ..
1881 marriage was Houghton Conquest Mary Sharman age 30
James Ingram age 31 married 2 may 1881
1883 Holy Trinity Bedford Mary Ann Sharman age 23 father William
Charles Wright age 24 father William
1886 Cranfield Mary Ann Sharman age 21 father James
William Frederick White 21 father George
1887 Clophill Mary Sharman age 23 father Joseph
Frank Peat age 20 father Francis.
I have some other bits for you to look at so will add another post.

So I think that could be your girl?
Anyone else see where I am going with this one ?

Thank you. This is brilliant. We/you are on to something here. I had suspected that her father was dead, but hadn't proved it. I'll print this out tonight and take it with me tomorrow to study. I'm most grateful ... indeed, I'm not just grateful - I'm delighted with what you've discovered. I'd never have found her myself - too many preconceptions! Thanks again.

Hi Sherlock ...
let me know how you get on .
I think this is Charles Sharman in 1851 living in Swinstead Linc.
Swinstead Lodge Jane Sharman hd w 60 farmer 230 acs North Wytham Lincs
Thomas son u 30 farmer son Swinstead
Charles son u 18 farmers son Swinstead
HO107/2095 F 98 PAGE26.
It does all seem to fit together with a March cousin on her marriage cert.

Yes, this all makes sense. Looking at FreeBMD, I suspect that George Ruffell's mother was Emma Simkins, and that he was born with the name Simkins two years before Emma married. That makes it likely that Emma was either sister or cousin to Samuel Simkins. I'll write up what I've got so far, and post it as a follow-up to this message. Thanks again.
