Title: ACKLING & BATTS families; Highworth.
Post by: Creation on Saturday 24 September 11 06:32 BST (UK)
For 30 years have been researching the Ackling family from Highworth.  Daniel Ackling was born c1800, and was a journeyman-sackweaver; his wife was Jane Wakefield.  His son Henry, came to Sydney on the 'Golconda' in 1858, and married Winifred Batts.  Eventually lived in Randwick and died in Redfern in 1910.  His house in Randwick is still lived in by a relative, and is classified a 'National Trust' building.

I am after the birthdate of Daniel Ackling (d.12/1871 in Highworth), and who may have been born in Highworth.  He was married to Jane Wakefield.  Also after forebears of Daniel.  And after birth of Henry Ackling's wife Winifred Batts--c1842, and name of Winifred's biological father, as Charles Ward is a stepfather.

Nothing of use on familysearch.org.
Might be worth checking with OPC here http://wsom-opc.org.uk/

I am unable to help with the discrepancy about census and age given, as I never have known the date of Daniel's birth.   As for Winifred's birth place, it could have been Highworth, but do not know.  I was sent a listing of BATTS transcribed from the registers in 1998 by Marcus Wild, showing births & deaths from Highworth and from Gloucestershire---but sadly, no Winifred listed.

1851 census at Towns End, Highworth

Daniel Ackling age 39 a Hawker bn Abingdon, Berkshire
Jane age 40 bn Statton (?), Wiltshire
Elizabeth 19 bn Abingdon, Berks

rest of children bn Highworth.
Caroline 17
Henry 14
Emma 12
Mary Ann 10
Edwin 8
Sarah 6
William 1

As the first child was born in Abingdon and Daniel gives that as his place of birth have you looked there for a marriage?

I presume this is the right family  :-\  If so it looks as though Jane died in 1867 and Daniel remarried in 1870 - his marriage cert should give his fathers name.

A possibility from the IGI (census do give varying dates of birth)

DANIEL MALONY ACKLING
 Birth  04 SEP 1813
Christening  01 DEC 1823   Lower Mtg House Ock St, Abingdon, Berkshire, England

  Father  DANIEL ACKLING    Mother  MARY

This surely has to be the right Daniel & Jane.  For the son Henry listed would have been born in 1837, and I know that Henry was bapt 10-2-1837.Even though the date of Jane being 40 in 1851 means she was born in 1811---whereas I have her birth as 21-3-1802 from some source from many years ago. Mind you, I never did know of the other seven siblings !  If, as it would now seem, the Acklings came from Berkshire, then I must give some time to searching there for links.   Again many thanks for what you have turned up Rosie.

The 1871 has him married to Mary, his place of birth Abingdon

There is this marriage on the IGI which blows the christening I found out of the water.  ;D

DANIEL ACKLING   Father  RICHARD ACKLING
Spouse:  MARY ANN CRAWFORD  father David Willoughby
Marriage:  9 APR 1870   Highworth, Wiltshire

I am in the dark as to what is meant by the christening opposing the marriage on the IGI.

The christemimg I found had father Daniel Ackling, the marriage has a father Richard.

I assume this is your Daniel that remarried.

Besides not knowing that there were 8 siblings, I was unaware that Jane had died, and Daniel had remarried...it is all new to me.

There is an Elizabeth Ackling bn 1829, marrying Benjamin Lay [1814-1903] in Highworth, she was the daughter of Daniel Ackling [1812-1871] and Jane Lea [1811-1867] both listed in 1851 Census of Highworth, one of their sons Henry Lay [1856-1893] married Anne Gibbs Garrett [1857-1949]who originates from my Stanton Fitzwarren Wiltshire, Garrett family, there are still Acklings living in Highworth, two listed in phone book with two more in Swindon area.
PM if you want further info on" Highworth Acklings" as I live very close to the Town.

Allan/
This is very interesting, as it may be that there are two Daniel/Jane Ackling families, because there are several age discrepancies involved.  Another Rootschatter found that the Daniel you mention was born in Abingdon, whereas I was told long ago that he was born in Highworth--and I know he died in Highworth in Dec/1871; and she said that this Daniel had 8 children, unknown to me; and that Jane died and he remarried, unknown to me.  I will do some checking to try to arrive at a conclusion.

Hi Clive,

I've just come across your post as I was doing a search of the Batt family of Gatsbury. I am a descendent of Sarah Batt, the sister of Winifred Batt. In many of my records the family used Batt rather than Batts, which perhaps is why it has been difficult for you to locate Winifred's birth.

Winifred Batt was born in the March quarter of 1845 in Pewsey, Wiltshire. The volume number is 8 and the page number is 421. Her biological father was Charles Batt, who died in 1850. Winifred's mother Esther married Charles Ward in 1856. Charles, Esther and Esther's children Anne, Winifred and Sarah arrived in Australia on board the ship Mary Ann on 19 March 1857.

Would you happen to know where and when Winifred married Henry Ackling?

You are an absolute gem !
I have been working on my Ackling-Batt's since 1980, and at last someone has progressed that side of the family.
Winifred married in the Redfern C. of E. 15-7-1861, and witnesses were Charles Ward, Ann Ward & Sarah Batts; and died here 5-12-1930 as a 90 yo.  Henry emigrated from Highworth on the 'Golconda' on 21-10-1858 to Sydney.  They had 4 boys and 4 girls.
                         Many thanks for your work.............Clive.

Interested to read this as the Elizabeth Ackling that married Benjamin Lay - they were my great great grandparents.

I have Daniel as her father born 1810 died 1871 wife Jane 1811 - 1867 but do not have a surname for her.

Milliepede,
Well you have now supplied me with Daniel's birth-year...1810; however, I have long been given Jane's birth as 21/3/1802, not 1811.  But you have supplied me with a death date, of 1867.  Do you know where the 1811 birth date came from ?

                                                                                                 Clive.

Milliepede,
On checking an earlier post from "aginger" to me on 27/9/2011, I was told of a Daniel Ackling (1812-71) was married to Jane Lea (1811-67).
Therefore, unless otherwise proven, I shall revert to belief that my Daniel, although did die 1871, was married to Jane Wakefield b. 21/3/1802.

                                                                                             Clive.

Hi
The 1867 death for Jane Ackling in Highworth gives her age as 56 so I guess that is where the birth date of 1811 came from.

Hi

Daniel Ackling and his wife Jane were 'Dissenters' being members of the Highworth Congregational Church, later to be known as the United Reformed Church.

Daniel is listed as being in attendance on 28 Jun 1866 in extracts from the church minutes. (2)

Roll of Members dated 17 Aug 1868... (2)
ACKLING Daniel, ropemaker 1863-blank
ACKLING Jane, 1858-blank, withdrew

On the 29 Sep 1868, it was decided that the church would be dissolved by mutual consent because of a long running rift - Daniel Ackling was 1 of the 15 members who signed their names and constituted the new church. (1)

Roll of Members...
ACKLING Daniel, died Nov 4 1871 (2)

Burial Record...
1871 Nov 4 ACKLING Daniel, matmaker, Inflamation, bur. in Cemetery (2)

Sources:
1.  "Highworth United Reformed Church: A Short History by R A Beck
2.  "Records of Highworth Congregational Church Wiltshire" transcribed by Alfreda Shackleton and indexed by Rosemary Church

Hope this helps.
