Title: Macrae - McRae
Post by: cmd6030 on Saturday 24 September 11 08:39 BST (UK)
Hi My name is Cindy, I am a descendant of the great clan Macrae of Kintail area in the Scottish Highlands.
I would love to connect with other descendants of the clan and share information.

My Great grandmother was Emily Ruth McRae.  Her family left the Highlands for Australia in the ?1800s and then sometime after this arrived in New Zealand and settled in Northland.

Emily's father was Rodderick McRae and her mother was Christina Ann Macleod, but not sure who their parents were, but would love to have this information.

Hi,
Thanks for replying.   :)
My great grandmother Emily Ruth MacRae was born in 1905.  Her father Roderick was born in 1876.  Both were born in NZ.  Prior to this I am not too sure, it is a bit confusing, but I think Roderick's father was named Francis Farquhar McRae born about 1840 and I think they were living in Tasmania Australia then.  I know from stories told in the family they definitely lived in Australia first and a lot of the family remained there.  The ones who came to NZ came because they were home sick and had been told NZ was more like their Scottish homeland and also that there was better farming in NZ. They mostly settled in the far north of NZ.
I have a book called Macrae's to NZ which lists family, but due to many of the family having same given names and information in the book skipping around a lot it is hard to read and understand how everyone fits, but it is where I have got the name Francis Farquhar McRae.
I have read the Clan Macrae family history written by Rev. Alexander Macrae which is fantastic for learning about distant relatives.

Are you a Scottish, Australian, Canadian, American or NZ Macrae?
Cindy  :)

Maybe this is of interest.

Farquhar MacRae and Ann Murray (married 1859 Knockbain) had the following children in Killearnan,
-- Farquhar Francis b 1861 d1862
-- Francis Farquhar b 1865
-- Mary b 1867

Can't see this family on the 1871 of Scotland census yet though.

And these are the only Farquhar and Ann in Killearnan in 1861

Farquhar Mcrae      56 b Kintail           (Head)
Ann Mcrae              38 b Old Meldrum  (Wife)
Cathrine Paterson  22 b Knockbain     (Servant)

Hi again Ana,
Thanks for the information.
My mother visited yesterday and we were going through the Macraes to NZ book trying to figure it out.
We think Francis Farquhar MacRae was born in Australia.  His father we think was John (married to Margaret Macrae) and he spelled the surname then as McRa.  The family reverted to spelling McRae in NZ.  His father was, we think was Farquhar of Faddoch (do you know where this place is?) who was, again we think, married to Mary Macrae daughter of Alexander and Isabel Macrae who had 7-8 children, and 4 of these children went to Australia.
There was a story in the family, not sure how true it is, that the 1st Macrae (name unknown) to arrive in Australia arrived on a prisoner ship as he had refused to take off his tartan which the English had banned wearing at the time.  Have you ever heard this story?
I stated in the earlier posting that my great great grandfather Roderick Welsh McRae was married to Christina Ann McLeod which is incorrect, she was Christina Ann Macrae - his 1st cousin who was sent over from Australia to NZ to married him.
She was the daughter of his uncle also called Roderick and it was her mother that was a McLeod, with the same given name Christina. ???
So confusing, so many people with the same given name, anyway I will keep trying to figure it out.
I became interested in learning my family history after my grandfather Claude died, he was the eldest son of Emily Ruth McRae and he used to have pictures in his lounge of the 5 sisters of Kintail and of Eilean Donan Castle.   :)

Hello again Cindy,

There is info here on Farquhar "Ban" of Faddoch:

http://www.ebooksread.com/authors-eng/alexander-macrae/history-of-the-clan-macrae-with-genealogies-rca/page-35-history-of-the-clan-macrae-with-genealogies-rca.shtml

Faddoch means "The place of peat sods" and is located in Kintail near Camusluinie.

Kintail is beautiful, I highly recommend a visit!

Thanks Ev,
I will try NZ BDM again, I tried a few weeks ago but there was a message stating that due to maintenance the site was down.  I have also previously tried with Australian BDM and huge number of Macrae came up but wasn't sure who I was looking for then. Initially I had thought that Roderick had been born in Aust and travelled here, but information since shows that it was his parent/s.

My great grandmother Emily Ruth Dobbs (nee Macrae) died in 1989.  Don't know who the Emily Ruth Macrae who died in 1926 was, possibly an Aunt.

Thanks again for the help.
C  :)

Hi Jennifer,  :)
My great grandmother Emily Ruth McRae's father was Roderick Welch McRae.
Emily was named after her grandmother Emily Ruth Hume, married to Francis Farquhar.
Are you the Jennifer Rochelle McRae listed in the Macrae's to NZ book?  If so, your John Wilmot McRae was my great great grandfather Roderick's older brother.  John Wilmot was the oldest of Francis Farquhar and Emily Ruth Hume's children.  My great great grandfather was the third born.  I think his father was John? whose father was Farquhar of Faddoch, although I have to admit I am still finding the book difficult and confusing to read due to the fact so many were marriages between cousins.  I figure if someone is a McRae or McRae ancestor it is best to just consider them family and not worry to much about how exactly they are related.
Are you in NZ or Australia?
I hope we can keep in touch and share family info.
Cindy

Hi again Jennifer,
Forgot to answer your question about where the family are buried.
According to the book and other information I have to date most are buried in Far North of the north island of New Zealand.  Although Emily Ruth and her husband Arthur Dobbs are buried in Te Awamutu Cemetry, Waikato.  They moved down to the Waikato when their son (my grandfather) moved down with his family for work reasons. The NZ McRae's originally settled in the far north of the north island and southern part of the south island of NZ.

Jennifer, some other information I found in the Macrae to NZ book:-
Emily Ruth McRae (nee Hume or Humm) born 5th June 1854 at Macquarrie Pains Tasmania and was buried at Purewa in 1926.
(Purewa is or was a cemetry in Auckland I think).
She was the daughter of Margaret Rooke and Henry Hume/Humm of London .

Hi Jennifer,
My grandfather Claude Dobbs died in 2006.  We had always been told we had highlander blood and he had framed pictures in his lounge of Eilean Donan Castle and the 5 Sisters mountains in Kintail Highlands.  Apparently his mother Emily had always been very proud of her highland roots.
I became more interested in family history after he passed away.
There was someone who posted some information to me on this site.  She is in Scotland and is related to our ancestors  hopefully she will get in contact again as she knows the area they came from and has information about family who remained in the Highlands.
Take care and please stay in contact.
Cindy  :)

Hello Cindy,

I am a McRae researcher, my family coming from Kintail, and I have looked up some of my files I have gathered over the years, and can add more info for you about Farquhar and Mary.

The fantastic book "Macraes Down Under" has your family as the first ones listed with 7 pages of family listed.

If you email me (*) I can send you a bit more about where your family fit in the big picture, from the tree I typed up using the Clan History to link families together.

Kind regards

AMH

Hey everyone :)

I am currently researching clan MacRae also. I live in the far north of Nz and Francis Farquhar and Emily Ruth Humm/Hume are my GGG Grandparents on my maternal side. Their son Francis had a daughter called Alice Mary or Mary Alice and she had my Grandfather Rex Clarke. We are in the MacRaes to Nz book on pg 13. I would love to connect with anyone from this line if possible :)
