Hi

The familysearch link says he arrived in 1825, if that is the case he won't be in the 1826-1922 lists.

Marriage 1827, Sydney, NSW

So, that's all there is there? Is there is document on there which could confirm he was born in Scotland, and departed London, and arrived in Sydney?

NSW BDM's are free to search online at http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/Index/IndexingOrder.cgi/search?event=births

They are by no means complete for all events, especially during the early years.  Civil registration commenced in 1856 so before that you are looking at baptisms, marriages and burials and not a lot of info is provided.  Details here http://www.jaunay.com/bdm.html

Some, but not all immigration indexes are available for NSW on the archives site, but very few have survived for the time you are interested in.  http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/state-archives/indexes-online/indexes-online

Newspapers are a better bet and I do see a mention of a Mr SIMPSON arriving on the William Shand in 1825.
http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/home

I would consult the book to find the author's sources because it may be from private documents in their possession.  You can get it on inter library loan from the NLA.

Information from "Shipping Arrivals & Departures Sydney 1788 to 1825" by J S Cumpston.

The William Shand, ship of 284 tons, crew of 14, arrived in Sydney on 3rd August 1825 under Captain Alexander from England calling at St Jago (Cape Verde islands), Hobart Town with a cargo of Merchandise. It left again for Singapore on 30 August 1825 under Captain Kenn.

It seems that it was also entered in registers as "William Strand" & also made trips to Sydney in 1822 and 1824 from London.

Hi there,

If your chap travelled steerage, in the 1820's to NSW ie before there was an active encouragement for immigration plans, then it is unlikely for his name to be found on passenger lists BUT .... if he applied for a Grant of Land, particularly during the 1825-1828 years then he may well have applied for "A Grant of Land Without Purchase" in which case, his application for that land would include details of the ship on which he arrived, as well as a full detailed list of his assets/capital etc upon which he could then apply to the Governor/Lands Board to be allocated acres in proportion to his capital.    Those applications (even when declined) are found on the reels at the NSW SRO, and are indexed online under the heading CSreLand  .... ie Colonial Secretarys Letters regarding Land Applications.   http://srwww.records.nsw.gov.au/indexes/searchform.aspx?id=14

From a CD for that 1828 Census

John and Mrs Simpson, with 14 pupils, free at Wallis Plains.   John to receive £40 and Mrs S to receive £10

I will try to find further info re Susan SIMPSON.

Possible marriage

John E SIMPSON and Susan BAKER in 1827 Sydney, Scots Church, Presbyterian.   A summary of the clergyman's record of that marriage is indexed as Volume 73A and line 40 at the NSW BDM online index.   It is likely that will not have a lot of information, and so perhaps further info would be on film at the NSW State Library, Macquarie St, Sydney, in their family history section.   I do not live in Sydney, so I am not able to readily access that film.

From familysearch org's new website

John Ewbank SIMPSON married Susan BAKER 11 December 1827 in Sydney Town.

The film at NSW SL should contain the image of that marriage ceremony.  It is likely that the clergyman may have included the ages for both the bride and groom in the "white space" just to the left of their signatures.  The image will also provide the signatures of the witnesses, and the status of both the bride and groom (ie spinster/widow and bachelor/widow etc).

Cheers,  JM

Again, familysearch org's new website

John SIMPSON born 30 July 1831, baptised 27 Nov 1831 at Maitland, parents John and Susan SIMPSON

Film of that baptism should also be at NSW SL.

NSW BDM online index has several entries.  Official transcript copies provide the same details as the official documents and are cheaper, quicker etc.

That's their marriage, yes. I can't either - I'm not in Sydney.

I am not one to spend my pennies, and I doubt if the NSW BDM cert will provide any family history info that is NOT already found on this thread.   The film will give the actual image, ie the signatures for them and their witnesses.  That would help confirm if they were both able to sign their names etc ... somewhat significant in linking them to the teachers in 1829 at Wallis Plains, but I think it very likely they were that couple, "Ewbank" is not exactly the most popular of given names !

I venture to Sydney and to the NSW SL perhaps twice a year, next time (ie mid 2012) I will try to find the film.  I have added this thread to my TO DO at NSWSL list, but hopefully other RChatters will have helped before then  :D

Fingers crossed.

Cheers,  JM

Hi there,
Among the children of John Ewbank and Susan SIMPSON you will most likely have a son, also named John Ewbank.
I wonder if there is a connection to Susan’s family and perhaps School teaching continued through the children of John Ewbank and Susan SIMPSON (nee Baker).

 ;) In the SMH 17 Jan 1880, http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/13453917
Public Schools... The undermentioned gentlemen have been appointed to form the Public Schools Boards of the Public schools established at the places specified .....  Moonan Brook .... Messrs .... John Ewbank SIMPSON and Walter Samuel BAKER.

 ;) In the SMH 16 Mar 1910 http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/15146176
SCONE, Tuesday.  Mr. Walter Samuel Baker, of Moonanbrook, a prominent resident of the Upper Hunter for more than half a century, died suddenly on Sunday, aged 64

;) From NSW BDM online index
Marriage 1873 (ie civil registration)  Walter Samuel BAKER and Sarah SIMPSON registered in the Scone District.  #3832.   That m.c. should lead you to information about the parents of the bride and groom, but it is possible that there’s some blanks in the NSW BDM records for that marriage. Those blanks are not actually causing any brickwalls.  The clergyman conducting the marriage was required to record the names, the prospective couple’s ages, places of birth, occupations and  their respective parents names (including all former names of their mothers), occupations etc.  It is just that NSW BDM received only a summary of the parish record and may not have reconciled the rural records with that summary.

;) From a SUBMITTED online tree, the date for that 1873 marriage at Scone is 11 Jan 1873, giving Sarah Simpson as born Whittingham NSW circa 1852 and Walter Samuel Baker as born circa 1846.

;D  ::)  ;D Hopefully I am not sidetracking too far from your original request, may I suggest you have a read of the thread http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,546609.0.html
and also the image at reply #12 of the thread giving example of the dreaded blanks http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,557757.10.html

;) I speculate that Sarah BAKER, nee SIMPSON could be a granddaughter to John Ewbank and Susan SIMPSON and further speculate that  perhaps Walter Samuel BAKER may have been related to Susan Simpson nee Baker.

Fingers crossed that somewhere along the line you will be able to find some clues re the birth place for the John Ewbank SIMPSON ex the William Shand of 1825.   I am not convinced that this thread has provided proof that he was the one baptised at St Michael Cornhill, London.

Cheers,  JM

Back to the voyage of the William Shand

From a NSW General Muster for 1825 there is
William Cummings Jnr arriving 1822 on the William Shand
William Cummings, arriving 1822 on the William Shand, hotel keeper
Mrs Cummings, wife of William Cummings hotel keeper arriving 1824 on the William Shand... perhaps that is a clue as to John Ewbank SIMPSON ex the William Shand of 1825 and then being employed by William Cummings Hotel Keeper on the 1828 Census  ;D

Re Susan BAKER ex Princess Royal of 1823 ... that was a convict transport with male prisoners from Ireland with a detachment of soldiers as guards onboard.

As she was aged 23 in 1828, then she was only a teenager when she came on that voyage.  Perhaps she was a daughter or a wife of a soldier surnamed BAKER on that voyage.

I will try to find further info.

Hi there,
Re Princess Royal’s 1823 voyage

;) One of the prisoners was a Thomas BAKER, and his certificate of Freedom was issued 12 July 1830 as per NSW SRO online indexes.  http://srwww.records.nsw.gov.au/indexsearch/keyname.aspx

;) From the 1825 General Muster, that chap was assigned to Mr W Redfern at Bathurst.

;) NSW Col Sec papers 1788-1825 have that Thomas BAKER forwarded to Airds for distribution abt 17 March 1823.
http://colsec.records.nsw.gov.au/indexes/colsec/default.htm

Fingers crossed these posts are leading you to find/confirm/eliminate further details for your John Ewbank Simpson and his wife and NSW descendants.
