I am looking for details of a couple of farms in Moffat. Specifically details of what they were like back in the late 1700's to about 1900. E.g. size, what was farmed etc. The farms are Newfieldbank/ Newfield Bank and what is now Alton or its previous incarnations as Oldtown, Auldton and various others as seen on BMD docs.
They do not come up on Scotlands Places and the valuation rolls only give limited details so i was wondering where else to look.

Just read the Sassines thread which might give a little information but i won't be heading to Scotland for a long time. Anyone know of any on-line references?

Look at the on-line catalogues of the National Archives of Scotland and of the National Library of Scotland. They have some estate plans. For the second half of the 19th century the National Library has on-line large-scale Ordnance Survey maps (6"/mile & 25"/mile). From the valuation rolls you will know the owner of the estate. Look him up in the NAS catalogue and the NRAS (link on the NAS site) catalogue. There might be copies of tacks etc.

The Directory of Landownership c 1770 list Johnston and the Marquis of Annandale as owning the majority with seven others having small holdings (1 merkland). Technically all non residents except for Lorimer. There were no portioners in Moffatt. Newfield isn't listed in any although it would be part of Johnston's 5 merkland of Auld. Moffat was rough country mountains, deep valleys lots of water, bogs, moss and even sulphur. Suggest you read the 1834 Statistical Account of Moffatt it will give a fairly accurate picture albeit flowery.
Dumfries register of sasines runs (1617-1780) and that is it. Sasines don't generally give size or extensive property description simply names and value...6 pennyland, 1 merkland, etc. The only records you might find that identify your kin are the cess accounts or from feu duties found in pocket books if they still exist and they will be found in the records of the superiors who I'm betting is the Johnston family. You can email the NAS and ask if they hold the Johnston papers but you may end up looking south because Johnston's lived in London.
If you really need to find out details of the farm you need to look to post 1900 when actual surveys were compiled. The Inland Revenue Valuation Office did this in 1911-12 which you can access through the NAS.

There is an old property called Newfield Bank in Old Edinburgh Road, Moffat that can be viewed on Google Maps

It looks like Newfieldbank is one of a number of smallholdings along the main road to the north of the town in 1857

The 1857 map shows that it wasn't very big and 6 acres is not a large farm

Sancti - i have all those census transcriptions and they are my line. I couldn't fingure what Baeres Urable was. I guessed at arable. 6 acres arable makes much more sense! - Thanks Monica and Flst!!
FYI - Kilway is actually Galway and Heman is Ninian.
Don and Graham - thanks, that is the sort of stuff i have not seen before so could be interesting, i'll have a search.
Silly question. On the 1861 census posted by Sancti, William is Shepherd Proprietor Of & Loom (oddly worded) and his brother is a linendraper. I can only guess Thomas may sold the product of the loom and may have even worked on the loom. Is this a resonable guess?

As the farm was small they may have needed more income to support the family
Viewing the original census on SP will tell you how accurate the transcription is

I found mention of a Halliday in the Farm Horse Tax 1797-98 Book Vol.2, for Moffat.A carrier, he was liable for paying duty on the 2 horses he owned. I think his initials were Jno. Clink on the link below to see for your self. A possible ancestor ?

I had found that before but I haven't found a Halliday who was a carrier in my line.
I had tried to make sense of the initials Jno. I wasn't sure if they were initials or if it was short for something. Any ideas on that one?
