Sorry it's me again looking for assistance. I am trying to trace my great grandmother's side of my family by the name of Hood. The following is the information that I know:
1901 Census
Living in Dalkeith Midlothian, 32 South Street
John Hood, 44, Fruit Hawker, Wife Barbara 42, Daughter Barbara 12, Mary Jane 8, and Agnes 4.
1891 Census
John Hood 34 and Barbara 32, Elizabeth S. Davidson aged 10 step daughter of John and Barbara 2 at 40 Stirling Street Galashiels
I can't seem to access these documents through Scotland's People but I know they are on Ancestry, however, I would like copies of these documents. I am unable to access them and I can't find them on Scotland's People, very strange I know but there it is. I would like copies of those censi and also a birth certificate for Elizabeth S. Davidson (also having problems finding that). Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong on Scotland's People? I'm sorry to ask!
Kind Regards

Hi
They should be on Scotlands People
1901 - Use Hood, John 44-44 Midlothian Dalkeith

Thanks gnu I'll try that.

The 1891 is a bit more tricky ~
Use John Hood, 34, Roxburgh and Ladhope

re Elizabeth S Davidson.
I see that she's down as step daughter and b. Galashiels on the 1891. Do you know what Barbara's previous surname(s) were? She's not showing to clearly on the birth records.

Hi again, got the censi on your advice, thank you. Still having trouble with Elizabeth's birth certificate. Barbara's maiden name was Sanderson. I have her marriage certificate to John Hood and they married on the 1 May 1888 I believe in their early thirties.
Kind Regards

Hi Borderlass,I see John is a widower on that marriage,is that correct.

There's a birth registration for an Elizabeth Isabel Sanderson 1880 Galashiels.
What's the betting that the S in Elizabeth S Davidson is Sanderson :)

:D
I decided to gamble 5 credits on the birth cert ~
18 Sept 1880 Galashiels -Elizabeth Isabella Davidson Sanderson, illegitimate. Mother - Barbara Sanderson.
Will send you the cert - think I still have the e-mail.

Possibility for John's first marriage.
1884 Ladhope/Roxburgh to Mary Milliken

Good find on that birth gnu :)

Hi gnu
From family stories that I've heard, she became a teacher and she did not marry. She went abroad to Kuala Lumpur (spelling?) and I heard she died when she was about 33 from cancer.

Not sure about Kuala Lumpar as there's nothing showing on the overseas deaths but there's an interesting death record down the road in 1915, Stockton
Elizabeth S Davison Dec q, 1915, Stockton, Durham, v 10a p 67 Aged 33

Hi gnu
I'm not sure about that one as you said Elizabeth Davison and her name was Elizabeth Isabella Davidson Sanderson. She was listed on the 1891 census as Elizabeth S Davidson. I think I'll investigate my great great grandmother, Barbara Sanderson Hood as according to family stories, she was ill and died around the same time? I have her marriage certificate; I'll look for her birth certificate and then see what I can find out. It's interesting how finding one bit of information opens up more and more questions!

Hi
I was just throwing it into the ring as a possible - nothing for her going or coming back from abroad. Age fitted and name was similar - if you use alternatives you get Davidson/Davison.
Family tales are notoriously difficult, I find. In many of them there's an element of truth but often a lot of digging has top be done.

I'll look for her birth certificate and then see what I can find out
Here's a likely one for Barbara Sanderson on the IGI
5 April 1857, Galashiels
Parents - Hugh Sanderson and Barbara Paterson

Thanks gnu, that is correct. By the way, I found Elizabeth Davidson Sanderson's death certificate. She died in Scotland inn 1919 of cancer at the age of 38.
