Title: Winters in Angus
Post by: davidwintersmith on Wednesday 12 October 11 09:19 BST (UK)
Is anyone else researching Winters in Angus, Scotland? I am looking in particular for a John Winter who married Elspet Sim and Mary Jack. Various sources give him a b 1760, 1724 (from The Golden Falcon), 1734.

Other ancestor Winters are located at Drumnichie Farm, Turfachie Farm, Derachie Farm, Burnhead, Hunchar, Tarrybuckle,
Drumclune, Glackburn, Dykehead, Dalchip. I have photos of many of these locations if anyone is interested.

Not really, but I do have one: "1771, March 1st. After due proclamations Ch Winter in ye parish of Aberlemno and Ann Guthrie were married". [Menmuir Parish Register]

Charles must have died before 1790 because in that year Ann married Robert Adamson in the parish of Tannadice: "Anno 1790. August 31st. Robert Adamson at Middle Drums and Ann Guthrie relict of Charles Winter late farmer in Craigend of Auldbarr were contracted in order to marriage and having been proclaimed three several times and no Objections offered were married the 8th September". [Brechin Parish Register]

HI David,
I have also got back to David and Elspet Winter, through their son Charles (Chas). like you all becomes a little sketchy beyond then. I would be interested in any pics or information you may have of the farm (Hunchar). my grandparents continued to farm in the area until 1970s recently.
thanks

John Winter and Elspet Syme are my 4th great grandparents.  My line goes through their great granddaughter Susan Winter who married George Henry.  I have a photograph of George, Susan and family taken in the early 1900s.  He was a prosperous farmer (he married the farmer's daughter).

The attached photograph is of George Henry and Susan Winter, taken about 1910.  Starting at the back and from the left, we have Thomas, Annie, Jessie Winter, George, George, David Robbie, Eleanor Ogilvy (daughter from first marriage, wife died), Isabella Margaret, Susan and Susan Lindsay.

Hi All,

Bumping an older thread but would be keen to hear if anyone if still researching the Winter Family of Angus?

Mainly back to 1750/1800 around Tannadice area.

I have my 4X Great Grandfather as William Winter 1802 born to Mary Duncan + William Winter. For the life of me I cannot find any concrete evidence of when William Winter was born. I suspect 1768 to a David Winter but again, I cannot be 100% this is correct.

However, I suspect again that there is a connection with my posters in this thread and my own roots.

thanks Iain Winter

No. They are standard wording in some parishes, for example Brechin, though many parish clerks didn't bother to be quite so precise in their wording.

That whole point of proclamation of banns is to invite anyone who knows of a valid reason why the couple should not be married to make it known publicly before the wedding took place. Therefore it is logical to record the fact that no-one came forward to forbid the marriage.

Thanks Forfarian,

I know/understand what it means  ;D
I had never (from what I recall) come by it in my own research & just wondered if it was specifically for 2nd marriages.......................................inviting anyone to say they are not widowed/divorced/closely related but as you say the wording is more precise in some parishes.

Interesting to learn these things as I would have wondered if I'd come by a marriage with these words as to why?

A.

I have John Winter 1760 married to Mary Jack as my 3X great grandfather. I didn't know of Elspet Sim as his first wife. I am interested in your photos of Hunchar and Derachy.
