Title: Peter Devlin - where'd he go?
Post by: Winterbloom21 on Thursday 13 October 11 17:11 BST (UK)
My Dad had an uncle who was born in Toomebridge County Antrim in 1898, by the name of Peter Devlin.    He emigrated to Canada in 1923 with a fiver in his pocket, en route to Montreal, stating that his final destination was Ottawa.

Every now and again I try to find somebody who might have heard of him, or knows something about his story.   So this is another go:  His father was called Patrick Devlin (d 1907)and his mother was Mary Anne nee McCormick (d 1927).    They were farmers.    He had four sisters, Mary (my granny), Margaret, Bridie and Elizabeth.

If there's anybody out there who is trying to find out where their great grandad came from, I'd love to hear from them.

Looks like this might be a marriage for Peter ....

Peter Devlin, son of age of Patrick Devlin and Mary Ann McCormick
to
Elizabeth O'Kane, daughter of age of Daniel O'Kane and Jennie Mullin
27 (I think) Apr 1933
Ascension of Our Lord Catholic Church, Westmount (this is part of Montreal, Quebec)

(from the Drouin Collection - if your local library subscribes to Ancestry Library Edition, you would have access to the original image)

A daughter was born in 1935 to this couple and baptized in the Montreal church - Saint Anthony of Padua.  On the marriage record Polarbear found it showed that Peter was from St. Anthony's parish.

Thank you very much, both of you.    I must investigate what the library here has to offer re Ancestry so that I can have a closer look.    If this is him, I shall be over the moon.   Thanks again, Siobhan

If Peter turns out to be yours, can look for him at this link to the Montreal Directories. Start at 'Serie principale' and it is generally English after that

Thanks, Polar Bear.    I've had a look through and it's very interesting.   Can't find anything for Peter, though.   Sadly, I don't think any of my relatives were ever prosperous enough to appear in any directories such as these. :'( ;D

This may be nothing...
but there is a Peter Devlin (h/o Margaret Doyle) St. Columbkille R.C. in Uptergrove. It is in Simcoe, Twp. Mara.
# is SM-MA 1425
As Devlin is not a frequent name, I thought it might be useful.

I presume you have him in Ireland in 1901?

And 1911...

I'd go back and check the Montreal directories.
For 1933-34 there is a Peter Devlin, lab (labourer) at #8 35 Lafleur Ave. Verdun
1936-37 Peter Devlin civ emp (civil or civic employee most likely) 2069 Tupper
1939-1940 There are 2 Peter Devlins. One with the same information as above on Tupper and the other an operator for J.C. Wilson with rooms at 4368 St. Denis.
You didn't have to have money to appear in a city directory.

You mentioned an Ottawa connection.  Where did that information come from.  The form 30A that seems to be your Peter Devlin only mentions a friend in Montreal as a Canadian contact.

Thank you very much indeed, everyone.   Vbain, can you tell me where your reference refers to?   I'm not sure what the shorthand stands for.     Debbie, I presume this cemetery is in Montreal?  Am I right?    I might have misremembered the info about Ottawa and it could be on another relatives Canadian paperwork.   I got it from the paperwork somewhere, so it might not be Peter.    Can I ask, if he stayed in Montreal all this time, where might be the best source for looking for any more children.  I believe he had more than one daughter.

Carol, thanks for the census references.  Yes, I do have them - in fact, so far that's all I've ever had!

Ancestry has Quebec records up to about 1941. I had a quick look but didn't find anything obvious.

If your local library subscribes to Ancestry Library Edition you can access the records that way. Even if you know first names, you generally get a better result if you put in only last names. There are other pay sites around as well but I don't have links off hand. One is called Your Folks, I believe.

Elizabeth O'kane(24) b. Brookagh(? ) Northern Ireland, dressmaker came to Canada on the Letitia arriving 11 May 1930.  She was accompanied by her 48 year old father, Daniel, and her 17 year old brother Daniel.  Irish contact was their mother/wife - Jane O'Kane of Brookagh, Ireland and their Canadian contact was Susan Mullin of 731 Rockland Ave., Montreal.  Susan Mullin was a witness at Elizabeth's marriage as was Lawrence Hasson.

The father, Daniel O'Kane, travelled back to Ireland on the Antonia arriving 11 July 1930.  Destination was Brackigh, County Derry, Ireland.  It was his intention to reside in Northern Ireland.

Thanks again, both of you.    Debbie, the Elizabeth O'Kane is looking better and better.   As you probably know, Derry is the next county over the line from Toomebridge (which is very near the county border) and I remember being told once that Peter Devlin's wife made the bridesmaids dresses for somebody's wedding over in England, so the fact that Elizabeth is a dressmaker helps. This is marvellous.    Siobhan

Oh, yes, Elwyn, that's definitely them - right name for both parents etc.   Isn't this great?     I'd no idea that they were living in Montreal.   Wish I'd known all this when I went there years ago.    Now all I have to do is trace the daughter(s).  S

You could email the cemetery and see what information they have on their burial records for this couple.  Elizabeth O'Kane's burial date 13/03/1971 only appears on the cemetery's locate a deceased information bank if you use a space for the apostrophe.  I would image the informant for Peter's death would have been his wife but in 1971 the informant for Elizabeth would probably have been the missing daughters.

Debbie and Valerie, thank you so much.    This is really helpful.    I will do both of the things you suggest and see what happens.    I will let you know if I get a result.  Kind regards, Siobhan
