I love this forum. It never ceases to amaze me as do all of our forum members.

It's another reminder of why I like so much getting immersed in genealogy.

I Googled the oban address given by the CWGC and it came up with a letter entitled ‘Forty-Eight Days Adrift’ and addressed to Trinity House in London and sent by a Cecil H bishop, Fernlea, The Esplanade. Oban.  So there we have a connection to the sea and a link to the family tale that Edward Smith was a seaman.

Cheers.

Anne, I am not surprised you may not remember. Your efforts in this area are tireless and you must have done '000s by now  :)

Euphemia and Edward were married on 28 Oct 1910 in Stirling.  Edward was a 23 year old Farm Servant (bachelor), and Euphemia a 21 one year old Millworker - spinster.  Have attached the parents names and occ for a bit of deciphering.  I see that Euphemias father was a labourer and pensioner of the 91st Regiment

Fergie - if you pm me your e-mail address, I'll forward you the entry.

My last credit showed that in the 1911 census she was still in Stirling.  When I top up shall get you the census record and forward it.

1911 SMITH EUPHEMIA F 21 DUNBLANE AND LECROPT /STIRLING 348/00 008/00 007

Got the census records only Euphemia and Edward on it.  he shows as being born in Midlothian, Edinburgh and she Stirling.

Have a very good day.  Regards,  Steve    :)

Just had another look at the 1901 Census .....

There is a Margaret and a Dorothy Cairnie at Spittal Street Girls Industrial School.

Could just be co-incidence but is they turn out to be Effie's wee sisters, the other details are:

Margaret, age 9, born c1892, Stirling
Dorothy, age 7, born 1894 at Stirling.

There is a 'matching' Dorothy Cairney sailing to/from Canada aboard the S.S. 'Montrose' in March/April 1923, but I'm not too sure how to read these things. It appears that's she's been back and forard to Canada (in 1914 then in 1922).

It says on this particular document that she's joining her brother Mr. Hugh Cairney, 68 Risemere(?) Avenue, Ottowa

I found 3 different documents, 2 of which 'cross-reference' but as I said, I'm dubious about posting the details in case I'm reading them wrongly.

Sorry about posting in 'dribs and drabs' - I keep running out of space (and nothing on the discussions on this problem seems to work for me).

Anyway ......

Hugh Cairney also went to Canada - 3 lots of documentation for him but again, once I get your e-mail address, I'll forward the images and you can sort out what's what!

What marvelous stuff folks.
I never thought I'd get so much information, both here and by PM, by posting just one question. .. It's great.

Euphemia's brother Hugh and sister Dorothy settled in Canada.

Another brother, John, (must be the one living in Arbroath in 1901) emegrated to New Zealand. Don't know where or when but I do know that some of his family are living there.

The Canadian family ar going to be extremely pleased with all this information. As am I.

Cheers

Hi guys, I'm a newbie to this so be gentle.
I googled Daniel Cairney Stirling as he is my great grandad (90% certain). Your forum chat was the first entry on search results.
My interest was in William Burns Cairney who was the third son of Daniel and Mary (Moir), he was my mum's dad. There were six in the family John, Michael, William, Helen, Hugh and Euphemia. As has been said, Daniel and Mary married in Edinburgh and obviously settled in Stirling. Daniel died in Stirling aged 82, Mary was deceased prior to 1903. William got married in Methil in 1903 to Janet Henderson and they had a son, Daniel, in 1905. Sadly, my great-uncle Daniel only survived 15 hours. My mum, Janet, came along in October 1911 but ended up being brought up by her uncle, John Henderson. William's wife died aged 35 and he re-married an Annie Murphy or Walker.
Hope this helps out, if anyone has details of where Daniel Cairney (senior) was born I'd be most grateful. I believe he came from Ireland and may have altered his name from Kearney or O'Kearney.
I've just started out on the geneology trail, so maybe I have taken the wrong route, feel free to correct me.

Hello alsuttie and welcome to RootsChat

Very interested in your posting. Your being the grandchild of William Cairney makes you my wife's second cousin. My wife is the grand daughter of Michael Cairney.
I began researching the Cairney tree some years ago but gave up to concentrate on my own family tree.

William is one of the brothers that I know nothing about so I hope you will provide lots of info on him and his family. I will be only too pleased to swap info with you. I have quite a few old Cairney photos and hopefully you will have some too.

The above phots were lifted from my old Cairney files and the info with them needs to be updated.
ie Mary Moir didn't die in Stirling, she died in Arbroath.

Cheers.

Good morning Fergie, thanks for your reply.
Brilliant to see the photos, at the moment I don't have anything like that at all. I will post a bit more tonight as I'm at work just now.
Once again, many thanks.

Looking at the pic you posted, I see you have his birth year as 1846. This is at odds with what I believe to be his death certificate, that says he was 82 when he died in 1922. Which puts his birth year around 1840/41. The 1891 Census gives Daniel and Marys' ages as 49  and 37, placing his birth year as 1842, just to add to the confusion.
As I said, I am just a novice at this but already I can see how easy it is to take the wrong path. I'll double check my 'facts' when I get home tonight.

Like I said, the files are old and in need of updating.
I have had a quick look at my computer files but ther is a severe lack of info there. There is some, but not a lot, mainly caused by a hard drive failure.
I will have to look out some old paper work and see what I have in there.

Last year, my wife and I went to visit her Cairney cousins in Canada who she has always kept in touch with, so we have loads of info on that branch of the family.
We are in Stirling, what part of the world are you in.

Cheers.

I'm in Fife, was born and brought up in Windygates but now live in Leven. I am the youngest (55) of the nine children George Suttie and Janet Henderson Cairney had. There is a good spread of age, my oldest sister Jeanette celebrated her 80th last year. I'll send you a few more details tonight and I intend getting what old photos we have (not many) digitised. Once I get that done I will pass them on.
All my grandparents were dead by the time I was born so I have no memories of them, my Dad died in 1978 and Mum in 1995. Needless to say I kick myself for not getting more info from them, I can remember some stories but not a lot.
Speak to you later.

Hello again alsuttie.
There are some snippets of info that you won't be able to pass on via this forum as the Moderators will not allow you to post details about living people.
i have sent you a PM with my email address.

Hello Cairney cousins,

Warm greetings from New Zealand. After a long hiatus from genealogy I'm getting back on the bandwagon and was very happy to see this thread. I'm descended from Daniel and Mary's son, John, who migrated to NZ in the 20's.

Fergie38, I believe we were in touch via email in the early 2000s and then lost touch, perhaps on Rootwebs or Ancestry.com. Hope you've been well. Would it be possible for you to email me the images of Daniel and Mary, please? Either you or another distant cousin I found online had sent me both photos a long time ago but I only have a paper copy of them now and nothing digital.

Happy tracing, everyone. Hopefully one of these days we'll find some Irish records some more details on Daniel so we can trace back even further.

Best wishes,
Kea
