hi
does anyone know of a orphanage /childrens home called nore house between bristol and porishead it was there in 1950s now shut down

Think you'll find that Nore House was on Nore Road, Portishead?
I'll need to rack my brains for this! (Portishead born & bred!!)
Are you sure you didn't mean the National Nautical School - also on Nore Road - which trained boys for a life in the Navy?
In 1901, Nore House was a private home to a Bank Cashier - who had a governess and 3 servants!
-
The National Nautical School for Homeless and Destitute Boys (to give it's full title) was certified for 350 boys in 1905.
Re-certified in 1931 for 225 boys, and became an approved school in 1933.
It was formerly based on the Bristol Industrial School Ship, T.S. Formidable, which was based in the Bristol Channel, just outside Portishead Harbour.
The shore-based establishment is now a private development, called Fedden Village.
See http://fedden.biz/histformidable.php
Records are at Bristol Archives.

Unfortunately, I currently live in The Netherlands, and can't simply pop into Portishead Library!
But, I did find this via Google:
I just found this post, and it brought back memories of when I worked in a large residential nursery in Portishead, I think it was called Nore House it wasnt a pleasant expeirence I was a lowly assistant along with a lot of other young girls trying to care for so many young children with very little guidence given to us by the qualified staff, and a pittance for wages.although the building had been a beautiful house in its time with the grounds running down to the water edge.I wonder what happened to the children when it was closed down, and is the house still there?
Also found a site selling 1930's Ordnance Survey of Portishead (West) (google for Alan Godfrey Maps).
Quote: Features on the map include West Hill, Dry Hill, Capenore Court, Greenfield Farm, Springfield Farm, St Peter's church, National Nautical School, Nore House, Black Nore Point Lighthouse, St Barnabas church, convent, Blade Road. (reckon that last should be Slade Road?)

hi KGarrad
thanks very much for the extra info and your time , i will pass onto my friend and hopfully it will ring some bells with her
cheers m

My brother came from Nore House in Portishead, and is in contact with people who worked there after he had come to live with my family, and with people who are still in touch with children who were there. It was entirely separate from the Nautical School. He too would be interested to share information.
-
My husband is the brother mentioned by his sister below. Here is his message: I was a child at Nore house from 1955 to 1958. I was 4 years old when i was fostered. I have some vivid memories of Nore house and some photos of children that were there at the same time as me. I continued to live in Portishead for some time afterwards and my best friend used to live in the property adjacent to nore house. If I recall correctly, I can remember Nore House Closing before I left school in 1970 as I saw the Outside wall and entrance to Nore House being bricked up prior to new housing being built in the grounds.
I would be delighted to share my memories with any other interested party.

So, another product of Gordano School? ;D
Small world!
Non nobis dominae - as the school song says!!

i have tried always to get info on nore house but got nowhere your the nearest i have got is info from roots chat , my friend carol and her 2 brothers were put there after 1957 when their mum died and at a later date they were fostered out as far as i know they were still at nore house in 1966 , carol did try getting info via the social service years back but she got no luck
does anyone know where records are kept ??
cheers m
-
Probably Bristol Archives?
Portishead has always been a dormitory town for Bristol, and many of the institutions and land were Bristol owned/based.
So, it's worth trying there first.
-
hi kgarrad
i have tried bondwarehouse bristol records office but no luck
tahnks for your reply

-
Maybe The Children's Society?
They took over the running of many homes.
-

I was at nore house from 1961 to 1965. During this time I was fostered out twice. A few years ago I traced my birth mother, who sadly passed away before I got to meet her. I did find a sister who lives in Bristol. By strange coincidence one of her best friends purchased a house on the site of the old orphanage. Apparently there were originally 2 buildings on the site although I don't have any memory of that. There is just one original building on the site. I was able to describe to the current owners in detail an upstairs room that was used as an airing cupboard- it had wooden slats. I have few memories - my favourite nurse was called nanny Tricia. I recall riding my bike in the wrong direction around the outside of the house, and losing a fingernail as a result. My best friend was called graham. I did try and find records but without any luck. My adoption officer was called mr Clark. He had black nhs specs.
-
Just found this thread sorry so late. I worked weekends and school holidays there in the sixties. It left a profound effect on me. I also went to school in the fifties with some of the children. But they were moved to a Bristol home at about ten. Memories, quite a few!

Hi ive just joined rootschat in a hope to find out more about nore house as i was there with my little sister between about 1961-1963 aged 4. I have some vague memories of the house and the garden that led down to the beach. It was a lovely house. I remember a rope net in a big tree and we used to play in an old car in the garden. I remember my freind john, a girl called lesley and a coloured girl called bonny. I wonder if they are about in th bristol area, also i would love to see a photo of the house (if anyone has one that is, as ive had no luck on the web. Happy new year. From stey
-
Hi All
I have just joined too, and am interested in Nore House and its history.
I think I now live in the 'other' property that was adjacent to Nore House, and which was used as staff quarters when it was an orphanage. We acquired the building when the developers had finished building on the site having pulled the main house down.
I would love to know more of the history and see any photographs should anyone have any. My friend actually worked at the orphanage for a while and is looking to see if she has any pictures.
If your enquiries have made any progress that you can share, please get in touch.
Regards.

Welcome to RootsChat! ;D
And a fellow Possetonian!
You might find something at Portishead Library?
Maybe something by Eve Wigan - a local historian of note?
I can't look myself, as I now live on the Isle of Man. ;D
-
I remember a building opposite the front door but within the grounds at nore house. I can remember going in that building once and seeing a tombola, crepe paper and other such trimmings. I believe it was used as a store room for such things. Please, please, please has anyone got a picture of that lovely old house? Regards from steve

Hi I have just found this site!! Very interesting to read all comments, I trained as a nursery nurse in the 60s first at Downend Babies Home then when it closed I went with the children to Begbrook House at Fishponds Bristol and finally to Nore House. I have very happy memories of my time there unfortunately have no correspondence with any staff,I do have photos of the house and of some children, the smaller building was staff quarters, laundry ,pram store and recreation room

Thanks for posting have been trying to reply to your request on my private message board but will not let me,don't know how to send you a photo of Nore ,will try to get some advice
-
You can't post attachments on a PM! ::)
So, you either do it on the thread, or exchange email addresses (in the PM) and send it that way.
Also remember that the attachment has to be under 500KB in size, and the name of the file must be unique within RootsChat.

KGarrad. Sorry this is out of context but I could not find any other way of asking. Are you one of twins?

To Portisheadframer. I understand you live in the coach house that belonged to Nore House, I trained as a nursery nurse at Nore in the 60s ,the coach house was as you said the staff quarters, the entrance was on the drive level with 4 (I think) bedrooms kitchen, sitting room. There were stairs leading down to a laundry, rec room, and an open space where the prams were kept this opened out onto a large area where the washing lines were ,then the drive wound back up to the front of the house.

Hi all. Another newbie to this revelatory roots maneuver!
Sat with my dear ol' Ma in Cyprus on her very well deserved holiday on the sun, @ so long last....!!!!
Needless to say our conversation has spiralled inwards to her most profound life experience. Growing up in Nore House! She's now 72 & was a resident for want of a better word from the age of 3: 1946 to the age of 10: 1956. She remembers Matron England & the man in charge she recalls was a Mr Llewelyn who may well be dead by now!? She has some fantastic & fond memories of the wonderful care she received from the staff there. (if your reading this, thank you so very much).
Mum was the only Black Girl in the village! & was fostered to a family in the area called the Coolings.
While she was there, Mum made. A true friend. A blond haired, blue eyed boy called Peter. Peter Johnson. Mum says she's still got his marble. The one they used to play with together between the railings of the boys & girls playgrounds in St Peters School. She says when he was adopted, they told her he had been taken to America. Mum says she was truly heartbroken. He was her only true friend. Mum was told she couldn't go with him. He was blond & blue eyed & would have a chance @ life. Mum was told she couldn't go because she was black & there was no place for her. ( A wicked world eh!?).
So if any body has any info or knows of anyone who may have been in the home from 46' to 56' please please please get in touch, say hi & share your memories.
Mum's not ofay with this new tech stuff, she's pretty old school so I'll do my best to translate in the most authentic way I can for her. It really does mean a lot to us.
Big love to all of you who came thru the system,
My heart really does feel for you.
Big love, Jenny Johnson & sons x

does any one remember a jennifer "C" at nore house she would of been 1 or two years old this was in 1970
-
RootsChat, being primarily concerned with Family History, doesn't permit the naming of people who are living, or potentially living?
It's all to do with fraud, identity theft, spammers, etc.
You'll have to remove her name.
-
I remember Jenifer....I looked after her, is this yourself?
-
Hi Jenny,
Mrs J and yourself will be able to send a "personal message" after you have made one more post ;)
To send a PM, you are looking for the third forth round button under user profile name.

Hi to all just registered with roots, after searching for information on Node House.
I come from a large family (seven sisters and four brothers). Not all of us was placed at Nore House. But I think 4 of us was. I know that I was there between 1956 / 7 . Aged 18 months
Are nanny who looked after all my brother and sisters was nanny Tricia. When we left at five years the family was split up into twos and went into various care homes.
I would be interested in any photos or information relating to Nore House and nanny Tricia
-
Have read your message ,I was a nurse at Nore House but much later in 1960s not sure if I remember Trisha I think her "family group " was called Treetops ,she was a married nurse and lived in Portishead and came in daily ( if it's the same person) I have a photo of the house it's not there now as it was demolished in the 70s and a housing estate built in the grounds. If you send me your email address I will send you a copy

Thank you all for you response, according to my sister because we were a large family nanny Tricia was are main carer
-
My memories as a child at Node House are good. I can remember an old car we played in.
-
I have memories of being a child at Nore House, of there being an annual event in which children camped out in the grounds I think they would have been cubs and scouts.
Also of every Easter a big Easter egg being dropped of a balcony after which we would all dive in to get the pieces of chocolate.

You seem to be clicking on the "quote" button instead of the reply button, you will find the blue reply button just below the last reply on the topic ;)

JennyJohnson- Matron England was my grandmother. I wonder if Mr. Llewellyn that your mother remembers is actually Mr. Lewington, my grandfather, who we think was a regional manager. We were looking for information about the home as my aunt Sally was adopted from there, by matron England's family, in around 1950

I have received a potted history of Nore House, from Sandy Tebbutt of The Gordano Society.
Attached here, just in case it is of interest.
-
Hi,yes I have received article, very interesting often wondered when I was working there about it’s history
-
You can add images to your posts here on RootsChat, you just need to click on the "attach button" :)
-
Hello, I have read this thread with much interest and would love to see pictures of Nore house and it’s estate if you have them. I live in what I think must have been part of the estate and have tried many times to find out its history. This house was built in 1887 and would have been adjacent I think to Nore house , maybe the Nore estate was divided and this house built then?
-
As you live in the area, have you asked at Portishead Library?
They may have some maps of the town and/or other information.
And, Welcome to RootsChat! ;D
-
Hi Thank you for replying and your welcome :) I have searched the library many times and have found some interesting information about the area but nothing specifically relating to Nore house and it’s estate I will try again but I will also ask this time too , thank you
-
I was resident at Nore House from 1956 - 1962. I remember my time there with great fondness and always recall being treated well. I was not an orphan, but I was there, I believe, because Bristol Social Services had concerns for my wellbeing. I do recall being fostered out to a family in Bristol when I was around 6 years of age, but this proved to be un-successful, and I returned to Nore House after about 9 months.
Obviously my memory of the building and grounds has altered over the years and my perception of it comes from that of an eight year old, but I recall the building being stone built, with a large entrance hall in front and a wooden staircase up to the 1st floor, and a corridor going left and right where different dormitories slept up to 30 children. Downstairs were 2-3 home group rooms where the children were divided up and looked after by a Nanny and an assistant - young girls at different stages of their careers. There was also a big kitchen downstairs.
The rear gardens were on 2 levels with a slope down to the 2nd level, steps to a wooded area and a path to the beach/sea and views across the Bristol Channel - I accidentally set fire to the woods when I was there, and almost got trapped in the fire!! I remember the rope swing and net referred to in an earlier post, and spent many happy hours playing there. The front of the house had a high wall and wooden gate with a drive up to the house.
The coach house was the Staff quarters - I never went in there so know nothing more than that. The tradition of firework displays was already in place when I was there; lots of Portishead residents attended, and I remember enjoying these events.
Overall my experience at Nore House was great. Because I was there for such a long time, I was almost treated as part of the furniture. When I was 8 years old, I was "transferred" to Sutcliffe Boarding School near Bath and remained there for a further 2 years before returning to my family home in Bristol. My life has been heavily influenced by my early experience at Nore House, and I am grateful the time I spent there.
I've never spoken to anybody I was there with, and don't recall any names, but I would love to be able to share my experiences with anybody who was there, or to see photos - I've got none myself.
-
Hi! Welcome to RootsChat! ;D
If you read through this thread, you will see that I grew up in Portishead!
The Gordano Civic Society may have some pictures.
Edition 23 of their magazine "Posset Pieces" had an article on Nore House.
You might also find some photos on FaceBook.
There's a group called "Portishead Past".
There is a potted history at reply #65.

Hi all
I would love to have more memories of Nore House. I was there with my twin sister in 1948 until 1953 (6 months old to 5 years old). We remember Matron England. She was an absolutely wonderful person. We also remember Aunt Betty and Aunt Eileen. I would so love to see any old photographs of Nore House and share memories of this time!! Many thanks in advance.
