Title: RUSSELL family
Post by: howe02 on Thursday 10 November 11 08:04 GMT (UK)
Looking for info for James Henry Weaver Russell born 21 July 1830 Winscombe Somersetshire - these details were on grave stone in Lancefield, Victoria, Australia - don't have any previous information. Looking to find info on parents (might be John Russell and Charlotte Weaver) and when he came to Australia.

James Russell is my Dad's (who is still alive) great grandfather.
James Russell married Mary Ann Thompson - when and where ?????
When did he come to Australia - was he married or single at the time of immigrating
James Russell was in Australia 1864 as he had a son Willie Henry Russell born in Australia

Any information or suggestions as to where I can start searching would be great..... Alison

Is the 1871 census available to search for John and Charlotte Russell - this may help narrow down the search years for deaths - they appear in 1861 census -Landford ?????

Any clues as to how to find when James and Mary Ann Russell came to Australia - they had a son born 1864 in Australia Willie Henry Russell - which is our line of family. So sometime between marriage 1859 - 1864........ Thanks Alison

Hi Alison,

1861 census

RG9/1675 Folio 82 Page 1
Landford
Winscombe

RUSSELL John Head 69 Mar b Wells Butcher
RUSSELL Charlotte Wife 65 b Batheaston
RUSSELL Isaac Son 24 Unm b Bath Butcher
RUSSELL Charles Son 21 Unm b Bath Ag Lab
RUSSELL George Son 18 Unm B Bath Butcher

I don't see them in 1871

possibly John's death

RUSSELL John Jun 1/4 1865 Axbridge 5c 419

I see brother Thomas died in Vic also.

I have not had any luck with James immigration. They may have entered through another state. We know now he was married and still in UK in 1861 and was in Vic by 1864 so that narrows it down. I suggest you post to the Australia Board.

Cheers Kris  :)

Kris - 1841 census John born about 1830 (son of John and Charlotte - 8 children) does not appear 1851 census - any clues, does he appear anywhere else in 1851 census or deceased?

1861 census
Caroline - presumed married so that narrows 1851-1861
John - he was gone where ?? sometime after 1841 - he would have been 21 in 1851
James - married 1859 to Mary Anne Thompson so need to find him elsewhere before OZ
William - gone between 1851-1861
Mary Ann - possibly married between 1851-1861

Where did Isaac, Charles and George go after 1861?   Think Isaac came to Australia

You mentioned brother Thomas died in Victoria - brother to who????  what year???

Thanks heaps Kris, so grateful for your assistance. I'll get a map and look at the places you located from census, bye for now, regards Alison

Kris - Mary Ann Russell (Thompson) in the 1861 census has her birth place as Saich Norfold - can't find this anywhere, can you suggest what it might be? Thanks Alison

Kris - is it likely that the whole family came to Australia? Everyone seems to be gone after 1861 census and nothing for 1871 census. Are there emmigration indexes from UK to Australia? ............. Alison

Hi Alison, I am afraid I don't have much time at the moment. Please check the Australia Resources Board for links 2 Australian States.

I read Charlottes birthplace as Saich = Norfolk is not a county I am terribly familiar with -  the nearest I could find is Setch/Setchey

An update - recently found Thomas Russell as a convict - went to Van Diemans Land 1842 for 10 years for stealing 8 sheep at aged 17yr - he was a butcher!

And just found Isaac and Jane Russell coming to Australia 1866 "Chariot of Fame" which fits with marriage in Axbridge Somerset (don't have confirmation only an index) and child (James William Russell) born in Australia 1867

Obituary
MR. J. H. W. RUSSELL
James Henry Weaver Russell. Mr. Russell was born in Berrow, Somersetshire  (England), in 1830, and was within a month or two of his eighty-fourth year. Determined to go to sea, he travelled to London as a boy of thirteen years, in attendance on the six horses of a stage-carrier. He wanted to join the navy at the time of the Crimean War, but could not obtain his parents consent. He sailed to Sydney in the maiden voyage of the clipper ship Moravian, and later took similar voyages in the Lincolnshire and in the Kent (under Captain Clay- ton). He settled in Lancefield in 1864.

This sounds like the same man? Looks like he was a sailor - he brought the rest of the family out because he told them about Australia after his trips? Now you just have to find them all arriving but you know how he got here
Case solved, lol

WOW - that was so wonderful to read - thanks heaps for the link - and to think I know how to use trove a little - but never found that article - so much rich history and personal information from his early days, thanks again - I am so glad I updated the post about Isaac, to receive your post was a huge bonus.
I am having doubts now about 1866 shipping for Isaac and Jane - there are references to Isaac Russell in 1864 - but of course there could be more than one Isaac Russell in the area
Again, thanks ............... Alison

After a long time I decided to carefully removed the old photos to see if any information on the back of photos. The albumn was in poor condition and torn on many pages and some photos missing. I have labelled them so I know in which order they were in the book (dark brown carved leather album)  Many are faded but others look fabulous
A name or two but nothing useful at the moment except names of photographers in Kyneton, Melbourne, Daylesford, Creswick, Inglewood, Fitzroy, Paris, Dublin - all postcard size
Most adults but some children and a couple with adults and children
One of a brick house with 2 adults and a boy out the front
One man in a uniform
One of a brick 2 storey shop and woman in coat outside
One of a pub and 2 woman out the front - I think I have seen this before on a website (maybe Ballarat)
Wedding photo of couple
Some look like they are woman in black 'morning' dress
A woman outside a 2 storey house
11 larger size - one of the large photos is a cottage and 1 man and 2 woman out the front - could this be the Lancefield house (Dunsford Street)
A man wearing a medal
A postcard with a woman on the front - on the back to Miss Russell from Jean  19 Jan 1917
Two mid size photos
One of the large photos (very faded) is a large family group on rocks - think I have also seen this before on a website
There are two from Atelier Photographique L Buvelot (sounds French) - on the back it says H. Doran from H. Hollow and the other says  Joseph Hollow
Could anyone connected to Russell family please make contact - I am going to have the photos scanned and could share the digital images
Hope to hear from interested perhaps distant relatives of this family .......... Alison
