Title: Adam Lothian
Post by: portybelle on Friday 11 November 11 08:13 GMT (UK)
I have an Adam Lothian on  my tree my 4x great grandfather. From his daughter Mary's death record in 1882 at the age of 77 I had his wife as Elizabeth Grieve. I have recently come across other info on the web which suggests she may in fact be Isabella Grieve. This other tree says Adam's parents are William Louden and Isabella Hunter and that he was born on 1 Dec 1769 in Lauder. It also gives Isabella's parents as John Grieve and Janet Bathgate.

I believe (from the same source) there may be an Adam Lothian on 1841 census in Westruther Berwickshire, married to a Sarah Gillies but have no idea of his age. I wonder if this Adam may be a son of mine as they married in 1827 when my Adam would have been 58. Not impossible I know - they went on to have another 4 children which would have been right up until he was 65! Perhaps someone could check the age on 1841 for me?

So far I am unable to track the info down regarding the parents of Adam and Elizabeth/Isabella and wonder if anyone else can help?

So looks like my Adam was still producing children well on in years then! And with a much younger woman! Thanks to you both for that - helpful to know. Wonder who the other Adam was - maybe a nephew unless he had an Adam with first wife.

My OH's 4x grandparents are Adam Lothian and Isabella Grieve (Isabella from son Thomas's death cert).

I have a note on Adam to say in the 1841 census his daughter Sarah is living with him and 2 grandsons, Henry aged 12 and Adam aged 4...... I queried to myself were Henry and Adam Sarahs children ?

I'd need to refresh myself on this as it was quite a while ago but I do think Sarah is his daughter and not second wife.

Hope this helps.

Terry

Just in case anyone is thinking that Terry and I now have all the info we need and that the topic is closed, we don't!

Any help confirming - or otherwise -  the parents of Adam and Isabella/Elizabeth would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

Adam Lothian is an old name in the Lauder area. Lothian and Louden seem to be regarded as variants of the "same" name there as they were elsewhere in Scotland.

I had 4 x great-grandparents called John Moffat and Alison Lothian or Louden who were married in 1770 in Melrose parish, but the extended Moffat family lived nearer to Lauder town than Melrose, in the fermtouns of Threepwood and Ouplaw.

I believe that my Alison was descended from Adam Lothian and Alison Raith, who were having children in that area in the 1690s and early 1700s.

Oh that's interesting. Perhaps we could compare info. Which of Adam's children are you related through?

Portybelle. I'm in the early days of my research with Adam Lothian and I'm related through his son Thomas. Adam is the 2nd Great Grandfather of my maternal grandmother. If you want my email address is: skipper75.ce@gmail.com

Hi all, I am descended from this family as well and I have done research on Adam Lothian (Louden) and Isabella (Isabel/Isobel) Grieve (and Sarah Gilles - we came to the conclusion that she was his second wife) in the past. My records show that Adam and Sarah had three children, Marion b. 2 Nov 1828, Sarah b. 25 July 1830 and Adam b. 16 Nov 1835, d. 17 Aug 1860 in a farming accident. He is buried in Eccles Churchyard. I am happy to send the information that I have to anyone who is interested! Lauren

Hello Lauren - I've only just seen your reply, didn't get a notification. It would be great to swap info if possible. Can you send me a PM with your email and we can get in touch. Particularly interested to know more about his death record which I've not had before.

Hi there portybelle,

Another relation/cousin here  :) Adam Lothian & Elisabeth Grieve were apparently my father's mother's grandparents x 4 generations back according to some family trees out there. I believe Elisabeth was from Maybole, Ayrshire. Have been unable to find any evidence, therefore very curious to any new info that may arise.
