Title: Has anyone used this site? Familylink
Post by: Daisypetal on Friday 11 November 11 13:49 GMT (UK)
Hi all,

Has anyone used this site before and if so is it any good?

http://www.familylink.com/

I received an email from them, which I found in my spam box, I guess I'm on some sort of list ::)

I'm a bit wary of giving out my credit card details to get a free 3 day trial in case I (or they) forget to cancel the subscription.

Regards,
Daisy

hi daisy p
a personal observation i would never give personal info to any site if a link came up unsolicited , and well done you for asking on here before going further this is not meant in any patronising way but too many folk get involved with sites of all sorts without doing checks first and certainly where bank details are concerned , i do hope someone can put you right on that site .
best wishes

Being an OAP and on alot of sites, I never give my details, not even my telephone number over the net before I check it out.  I worked hard for my money and my pension.  I was poor for many years.  They - the unwashed spammers and thieves are not getting my money.  Its mine because I deserve it, you the unwashed who have never worked a day in your life, will not get my money.
If you have that attitude you wont lose your hard earned money.
You also have to think whether 3 free days is worth your bank money
disappearing forever into some rich spammers purse.
I know what I would do  -  IGNORE IT.

Yours sincerely,
Sandymc

This site looks exactly like WorldVitalRecords.com. My local library subscribes to that, and while it contains a lot of records (mostly American), I couldn't really find any UK information on there that could not be found on other better sites. For example I think they use FindMyPast's transcription and images for the 5 available UK censuses (1851, 1901 and 1911 not available). So I don't really think it is worth it.

Exactly as Freckneale says, there seems to be very little if any British information which is not readily available elsewhere, and often free. Keep your card in your wallet.

Thank you all for your input :)

I thought I'd let you know that I was worried that people might be being scammed (and also curiousity got the better of me)  :D  so I called WorldVitalRecords.com customer services and they answered with "Hello World Vital Records and Familylink" so it seems they are the same site.

When I asked what the difference was between the two websites I was told the records were almost the same on both sites ::) Apparently if you join one site you have access to the other one, but he didn't sound too sure about it :-\

Asking him why there were two websites seemed to confuse the poor chap, especially when I wouldn't say which one I wanted to join. I decided to end the call there and save my pennies for more understandable sites :)

Regards,
Daisy
