Hi and welcome

Without more info it may be difficult to determine the right families

The 1901 census has 876 entries in Somerset for the surname Lock but only 11 for the surname Jowles

Can you give some names/birthyears/birthplaces etc but not for any people who are still alive

If you already have any census or BMD info on the families - can you tell us so we don't duplicate efforts

Dear amantay,  I have just been looking on RootsChat.Com And I noticed that you are relatives of the Joules family, I am too. Funny enough we have just come back from Weston, and we were trying to find out where Merrily and their family are buried. My Grandfathers brother  Ernest Wallis married Bettsy Joules . Perhaps you can get in touch with me as I have photographs and info., to share perahaps you can share with me too. Best wishes Pearl

Hello Pearl , yes my great grandmother was Phoebe Joules . I have family that still live around Weston now . The graves you are searching for are in St Mary's Church in Yatton which is close to Bristol . Merrily is buried along with many other Joules family there . The story goes that when Merrily died her husband Issac Joules was so grief stricken he spent many days and nights laying on the grave. I have been to see it myself the graves are located near the entrance to the church , they have a black wrought iron enclosure around them . If you would like to keep in contact to share storys and info i'd be more than happy to . My email address is * ... may be easier on there ... Best regards Amantay

I've recently been given 2 photographs of Rebecca Lock of Nailsea, one calling at Court Farm in Clevedon, the other a studio photo with one of her babies.

I can scan these, would you like copies?

Thrilled to know about the link with the Joules - you'll know of the engraving of Isaac, I'm sure?

best wishes, Jane Lilly ;D

In response to tiggi's comment, I am a descendant of Valley Joles and Lily Stanley Joles.  In our family she was always referred to as Lily.  What I've been able to worry out is very little. The family story was that they met in the US and she followed him back to the UK and married him.  William didn't survive to come back to the US in 1910 with Lily and Henry.  I have a couple of pics of GrGrGrandpa Valley and GrGrGrandma Lily.  Pics of GrGrandpa Henry and GrGrandma Mabel Beamer Joles.

Hi All,

My name is Gary Stanley and I live in Devon, UK. James Stanley/Unity Wells are grt, grt, grt grandparents and I think I'm related to some of you and was hoping to get some help with tracing family members, specifically James Stanley who married Unity Wells ...

I also have Smalls, Joles/Jowles/Joules, Bucklands and other well known gipsy names in my heritage and as some of you have mentioned, Lily is a relation to me also. It would be great to discover some further information ...

Hello everyone
Sorry for my late reply to this thread.
I am the great granddaughter of Merrick Lock and Phoebe Jowles/Lock.
I would be grateful for any photos and I see someone mentioned having photos of a waggon they may have lived in.
My mother has childhood memories of visiting Phoebe in a waggon at Uphill Somerset.
Interested to chat with any relatives from the Locks, Joles/Jowles/Joules family
