Title: Arrival in Aust for RYDER FAMILY Completed
Post by: ian-nz on Sunday 04 December 11 04:26 GMT (UK)
Hi

I am hoping someone can help me with the shipping information for William and Elizabeth Ryder and their two sons who arrived in Australia from Yorkshire in 1912. William Ryder was born in Staffordshire in 1880 so would have been 32 years old. He was a musician. I have no information on Elizabeth but the sons could have been William and Joseph.

On the 1914 Electoral roll the family are living at Mc Arthur Street, Malvern East, Victoria so I am guessing that they first arrived in the Victoria. They later moved to Queensland.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Merlin

I had tried that but they do not show up. I just wondered if there were other records that I might find them.

Many thanks for your help

Is Elizabeth's maiden name is NEILL?

If so, there were two children born in VIC 1912 & 1913 at Malvern to William RYDER & Elizabeth NEILL.

Do you have those?

I guess that's how you figured they were here by 1912 if it's them

On the 'Medic June 1911 there is also:

RYDER ELIZABETH age27
RYDER JOYCE age2
RYDER WM age4   (Ted has already noted this one above)

Perhaps William Snr arrived earlier or later than them, many did back then.

Elizabeth Ryder age 27 is on the same ship

Joyce Ryder aged 2 is also there

This may not be your family - I cant find William the father.

Remember to keep an open mind. He may have travelled here earlier by himself

Unassisted passage lists are not complete lots of people listed by just Mr/Mrs or Junior

Red post - great minds think alike Merlin   :D

Hi again,

On Trove there is a death article for W. Ryder Noted Cornetist in 1942 which says he came to Australia in 1912.

I have not been able to find a marriage for William to Elizabeth in England so I was very pleased to have the possible surname of Neill for Elizabeth.

They had three sons and three daughters which I am still trying to find so I can add Joyce to my list. I would love the names of the two children who were born in Victoria Merlin. I do not have thoes.

Thank you all so much for your help. You have given so much more to work on.

Father: Wm
Mother: Elizth NEILL

RYDER Daphne Mary b. 1913 MALVERN #32743

If you purchase online for $17 & download immediately the birth certificate for the first born child in 1912 it will give you the information on the parents you are probably looking for.

BTW there is no marriage for them in VIC.

Thank you Merlin. I have now sorted out four of the children. The last two must have been born in Qld after 1914. Daphne Mary Ryder I had a birth date of 1915 so I was a few years out with her. She was married to my Uncle but they later divorced.

I have found an article on Trove where Joyce Ryder had been visiting her parents in Gympie so I know I have the correct family.

Thank you Judith I have just found that marriage for William and Elizabeth in Yorkshire.

Thank you all so much. You have helped me fill in so many gaps with this family.

Wow Merlin you are amazing, finding thoes two articles.

I think I now have all six of William and Elizabeth's children.

The death notice for Roberta has Mother and Joyce and Terry. I wonder if Joyce and Terry are her other two children. I have not been able to find their names until now.

Many many thanks

Thomas and Daphne had two other children one born in 1934 and one in 1937. A boy and a girl. I am thinking she called the daughter Joyce after her sister.

I have not found out when Roberta Elizabeth was born but she must have still been a baby when she died in 1937.

Thanks so much for your help once again. I have learnt so much today and have a lot of new information to add to my file on this family.

Hi Ian - NZ.

my name is Melissa.

The people you are referring to Roberta Elizabeth Kitchiner )Kitchener and Thomas William Kitchiner (kitchener) are my half Aunty and my Grandad.

Roberta Elizabeth also know as Elizabeth and Bobbie was born in Rockhampton.  She died at the age of 3 due to tetnus from the soildering iron of my grandad who was using it for his model trains.    She burnt her hand with it.

Thomas William - also know as Bill my grandad never spoke about his other children much.  My Father Charles Noel also know as Noel and his brother Thomas William also known as Bill have been told that Daphane and Thomas William (senior my grandad) had 2 other children.

Hello Melissa

Sorry for the delay in replying. Not very well at the moment.

Your Grandfather Bill was my mum Daphne Bernice's brother and my uncle. Your dad and I are cousins.

Thank you for the information about the cause of death of little Roberta. I did not have this. So very sad. My dad had tetanus when he was very young and was one of the first in Aust to survive from it
otherwise I would not be here.

I have found information on Daphne Mary Ryder's second marriage and also her death if you are interested. Only to happy to pass this on if you would like it.

Pauline
