Hi,
Looking for information on the parents of James (Jem) Roche.
His father John Roche and mother Mary Roche nee Moran were from the Ballinclay area of Killurin, County Wexford.
When did they die?
Where are they buried?
They both seem to be on the 1911 Census, but in different places.
John, age 61, in Ballinclay, Killurin.
Mary, age54, in Slaney Street, Wexford Town.

The following might be of interest - article published in the marshalstown journal 2003 there is an article about Jem Roche as he worked for a time at Carton Forge of Scarawalsh - it lists his birth place as Glynn .

In the 1901 census John Roche is residing in Slaney Street and is described as a “van driver”. It’s highly unlikely that at his age he became a farmer by 1911 from his own toils.
In the 1911 census John is still described as the “head of family” on form B1 for the Slaney Street address even though he’s not residing there.
The likelihood is that between 1901 and 1911 he had to take on the family farm holding (which includes a stable, cow sheds etc) from his younger brother Edward Roche who was farming there in the 1901 census.

Hi Tomahurra
Thank you for the details, hopefully I will get to see the 2003 Journal in Wexford Library.
Some where I have seen it written that Cartons in the forge were related to Jem Roche the boxer, but it did not say which side of the family, his father John Roche or mother Mary Moran.
Glynn mentioned would be the RC Parish of Glynn.
Jem Roche was born in the Moran house in Ballinclay Upper in the Parish of Glynn.
I would be interested in any other articles or information on Jem Roche.
As Jem Roche’s parents died after his World Title fight in 1908, I am sure there would be obituaries for the deaths of his parents in the local papers.
Any information would be greatfully received

Hi Shorts
Thank you for all the details.
What you say seems to make sense.
I do not know if John died on the farm or moved back to Wexford Town before he died.
The Roche families have graves in the local Whitechurch graveyard but it is not known if John Roche or his wife Mary Roche nee Moran are buried there.
I have not seen a headstone with either of their names on it.
Maybe some in the boxing clubs in Wexford may have some details on their deaths? I think many brothers? and/or cousins? of the Roche family were involved in Boxing in the Town.

I think Jem Roche's sons Pierce and Seamus were both involved in amateur boxing in Wexford Town. As a matter of interest ,among Jem's grandson's are playwright Billy Roche and internationally known singer/musician,songwriter Pierce Turner.

Hi Shorts
A very belated thank you for the cutting. I have now obtained the death cert.
I can only assume that she is buried in the Roche family graves in Whitechurch. I do not see a headstone with her name on it.
Thank you so much for all your help.

Hi Shellback
A very belated thank you for the information. I was not aware his sons were involved in boxing. I have seen articles in the local papers connecting Billy Roche and Pierce Turner to the boxer, there seems to be a lot of talent in the Roche family.

You can see in 1911 Mary says she had 11 children 10 living.
What information on 'other family members' are you looking for?
Are you only looking for Jem's children etc or his siblings?
