Title: Poor Relief Applications
Post by: wattnb on Monday 05 December 11 14:00 GMT (UK)
 :)

Hi,

I am trying to find out whether the Poor Relief/Poorhouse Applications for Dumfries and Galloway are available anywhere. I have an ancestor who died in the Moorfield and his application might provide more info about him.

Thank you.
 ;)

HI AKC,
Thanks for your reply.

I should have put Moorhead (not Moorfield) Hospital.
I have already contacted the Dunfries and Galloway FHS and they contacted the Dumfries Archives for me but they said they did not hold anything there.

Hi wattnb,
Could you give us a bit more to go on.
Ancestors name and a date would help.
Moorheads Hospital building today has been converted to flats
-- advertised as "suitable for occupancy by young professionals".
Here is the entrance doorway from St Michael's Street.

My Dumfries ancestors were called Wells, previously Walls. They originated in Ireland but I do not know where exactly.

On the other side of my family I managed to find out the area that my ancestor came from (also in Ireland) through a poor relief application which gave his place of birth.

I am thinking that if any of the Walls family claimed poor relief or were in the poorhouse, then maybe their application(s) would be similarly helpful.

Just trying to knock down a brick wall!!
