Title: place name in Kilmartin
Post by: TropiConsul on Wednesday 07 December 11 22:26 GMT (UK)
I read the attached fragment from the Kilmartin OPR for 22 Oct 1777 as:

Octr 22d-
---tian Daughter lawful to John MacIntyre in Tiberlich and Flory MacKay his spouse was baptized

I have searched for Tiberlich and Giberlich and variations, but I'm not having any luck.  Do any of you folks have a better idea?

If you go to the National Library of Scotland map website you will find Roy's military map of Scotland from the 1750s. You identify the position on a more modern map and it then converts it to Roy. It is very good for small places in the highlands.

I think you'll find it's Tibertich.  Just about 3 miles North of Kilmartin on the A816.
Only recognised it as I was in the area a few months ago.

I found it in Scotland's Places.  Remind me to cross my "tees".  I can't tell you how many times the lack of a crossbar has confused me!

And you were actually there!  It appears microscopic on the map.

Thanks.

Just checking back on my photos.  Never actually took any around Tibertich.  However, here's a couple I took in Kilmatin village - one of the main street and another of Kilmartin Church.  I was there on 20th Sept this year.

And the sun was shining?  Very nice photos.  Thank you so much, Dave!

It's a bit in the distance, but this is the best photo I can find of Tibertich.

Tropiconsul.  Yep, the sun WAS shining that day.  Hot enough that I just HAD to sit, for about an hour, in the beer garden across the road from where the pic was taken.  Only had a couple of haufs and a cider.

I had a chauffeure that day so it was allowed.  Thanks 'prophetess'.

Hi Don, welcome to RC.  Nice find.  I use Geograph often but it never crossed my mind to look this time.  It is a great site.  I've posted a couple of pics on it myself.  However, it's hard to find a grid that someone hasn't pictured before.  Brilliant idea to eventually have a pic of every location in UK, albeit ambitious.

Enjoy RC.

Dave

(excuse the spelling of chauffeure - can't be bothered spellchecking but I know it doesn't look correct.)

Well, I suppose this takes us a bit off-topic, but I will attach a couple of my photos.  The first is a picture of Bear Creek running through my Mom's ranch outside of the old German settlement of Fredericksburg, Texas (pop. about 1800) where you can stroll die Hauptstrasse with a stein filled at the local brew pub or sample locally made wines and whiskey, buy cured meats at Opa's Smokehaus and on Sundays listen to the oompah band at the Altdorf Biergarten.   Keep them Texas hardshell Baptists out of town!

The second photo is a vista from north of town when the bluebonnets (lupines) were in flower.

Nice pics, interesting comments.  Bet if we take this much further, Monica will shift / split the thread. ;D

Think perhaps we should keep it to Kilmartin / Tibertich.

Check me.... trying to be Mister serious for a change!  Whaurs ma whisky!

For the information of anyone with an interest in, or visiting,  the area, there is a museum in Kilmartin itself which is full of local history, including a lot of names of people who lived there and in the local area. The lady there was really pleasant and helpful when I visited a couple of years ago.
