Title: Rutland Research
Post by: slowbutsure on Friday 09 December 11 13:07 GMT (UK)
Previously "diddymiller" answered a question I had on Ryhall in Rutland as he had access to the 1841 census for the village.  By any chance has anyone got access to the 1841 census for Tinwell, Rutland.  On search engines, people from there are listed as being at "Stamford Union" which makes searching tricky.  I don't understand why because Ryhall was under the Stamford Union as well, but they are listed as Ryhall.

I have tracked one family in Tinwell in 1841 with the name COLE but want to know if there are other families with the same surname at that time.

Slowbut sure.

Can you  tell us what you have already found so we don't duplicate your efforts  :)

Danuslave,
Thanks for your reply - The story so far -

My known relative is Samuel Cole who in 1841 was living in Ryhall but is shown as born in Tinwell.  His age is given as 35 but 10 years later he is 51, so one of the ages is wrong!

The family in Tinwell that I have traced, that may be his family is :-

William Cole (70) and Eliza Cole (70) (possible mother and father.
Living with William Cole (35) (possible brother) and Jane Cole (40) possibly William's wife, and their children John (12) William (11) Ann (8) Sarah (6) and another age 2 whose name I cannot make out.

This may well be the family but I am trying to find out if there is another COLE family in Tinwell at that time.  I think to village population was only about 250.

Thanks for your rapid reply!

It looks like The William Cole family is mine, judged by the dates.
My known relative was born either 1880 or 1806, depending on which census age was correct.  So whereas he could be a son of William and Eliza he couldn't be a son of Thomas and Mary.

Next stop is the Parish records for Tinwell.  I gather they are available and I hope the Leicestershire  Library have a copy.

Ironic really my family moved from Rutland down to Surrey for work on the rebuilding of the Crystal Palace and I had to move from Surrey up to Leicestershire for work as well.  So I have returned!

To all Respondants
Many thanks to all who have replied - all has been a great help.
Can anyone tell me where one can get access to the Tinwell Parish Records?  Preferably in Leicestershire/Rutland area.
I was going to try and trace my family back beyond William and Eliza (born 1771).
Slowbutsure.

Dear Iluleah,
Thanks for the information, I thought it might be there at Wigston.  The last time I was there I was researching ancient sewers in my village - so this will be a pleasant change!!

Hi Just googled cole family in Tinwell and this post came up!
Slow but sure, I am directly descended to samuel Cole who was born in Tinwell in 1801 and died in 1896 (according to his gravestone in Ryhall) if we share the same one he married Elizabeth smith in 1829, had 7 children, Robert, Samuel, Elizabeth, William, Maria, and John.  Been trying to trace the cole family history for a few years now and have uncovered some skeletons in the closet along the way.  :o

Hello Slowbutsure, I have just started using this site, and have read your enquiries.  I am the transcriber of the Parish Records for FreeReg.  I am in the process of completing the period 1689 to 1755.  I finished the period 1755 to 1900 + last year. Williams father was John Cole who married Edith Culpin.  John was from Stamford.

Hi Colepell

Are you transcribing Rutland as a whole, or just certain areas.

My interest would be Uppingham.
