Hi Baggsy
Further to Kimbrey's reply the 1851 census does show residing in Reading a James Povey b.1825 Earley
RG number: HO107 Piece: 1692 Folio: 649 Page: 38
From the 1841 there is a James & Rebeka Povey at Mobber's Farm, Sonning, Earley
who have a son James b.1821 along with others
Piece:13 Book/Folio:7/12 Page:19
How did you arrive at James Pover so to speak, I do have an interest in the Povey surname
-
I too have an interest in the Povey family. John Povey bn abt 1700 mar Elizabeth Bennet bn 1701 daughter Elizabeth bn 1725 mar Daniel Heath Hungerford BRK 1745.
-
Thank you, credits run out so can't look at 1841 census..!!
I started with my Uncle who was a Povey and worked back, all were born in Reading Berkshire Alfred c 1872 & Nellie, Parents James and Hannah c 1826/8,his parents James andwife 18??poss Rebecca
Thankyou for help..

Baggsey
So you are descended from the other Carter/Povey marriage in Reading as opposed to my Grandparents Carter Povey marriage....this could get very confusing and need to avoid confusing your Hannah Povey with my G G Grandmother Hannah Povey (1826) both of Reading
and just to further confuse my branch are descended from a John Povey circa 1700 near flipflops John Povey in Hungerford.....
I will PM the 1841/1851 census info to you
-
Oh that would be great ,thank so much...Very confusing...! :) indeed although my relations are Hannah Carter and James Povey..? I am confusing nyself now.. :-[

Povey researchers may have come across an item about the White Hart, Hungerford on http://www.hungerfordvirtualmuseum.co.uk/ which looks as though 'my' Elizabeth Povey became the landlady on the death of her husband Daniel Heath.

Very interesting site especially when you go to the search page and dial in Povey as the search term!
Thanks for Posting

From an Oxfordshire FHS CD of Sonning parish records:
Married by banns 15 Oct 1820 James Povey X of this parish & Rebecca Withers X of this parish.
Witnesses: John Withers X, Anne Withers X.
Baptisms:
23 Dec 1821 James s/o James & Rebecca Povey of Early, labourer
8 Jul 1827 George - ditto -
28 Jun 1829 Charles - ditto -
27 May 1832 Jane - ditto -
13 Jul 1834 Elizabeth " " " " "
24 Jul 1836 William " " " " "
Unfortunately baptisms on the CD stop at 1837.
Glancing at the baptisms index for Sonning, there are plenty of both Poveys and Withers in the 1700s so it looks as if the families were well and truly based there.

I am married to Patricia Povey, researching ancestors so far brings me to John Povey who married Elizabeth Bennet on 8th Dec 1723 at Speen or East Ilsley. They had a son John born 19.01.1723 or 4. He married Mary Painter at East Ilsley in 1750 they had a son, also John 1751-1841 who married Mary Cannings in 1774. They had John, Mary, Prudence, Neil, Michael and Charlotte. Michael married Elizabeth Viner and had a son called Henry born 1825 . He married Mary Ann Piper inc1851.
My wife is descended from Michael.
Can anyone fill in siblings of any of these , or how the line goes back from John. I note someone suggests John Povey may have been born in 1695, would this be our man.
-
Hi,
The records I have reveal that;
Michael Povey (from Inkpen)- m - Elizabeth Bennet 8-12-1723 in Hungerford St.Lawrence, Berks.
John Povey - m - Mary Painter 17-9-1750 East Ilsley St.Mary
John Povey - m - Mary Cannings 11-10-1774
Michael Povey - m - Elizabeth Vince 21-5-1804
Charlotte Povey - m - Moses Keen (from Woolhampton) 11-9-1809
These last three marriages were all in Speen St.Mary.
Taken from the Berks FHS CD of marriages.
Hope these help. Its difficult to identify the siblings with such a common name of Povey as there are so many - can you give more info?
Alan

Thanks for this information. Will have a chat with family and see what can be found. I had a John Povey married to Elizsbeth Bennet. That info came from 'ancestry' and I have known that be be wrong occasionally.

Hello.
Henry Povey was born 1824 and baptised 15 Feb 1824 St Mary the Virgin, Speen, Berkshire.
John Povey born 1750 Baptism 10 Feb 1750 St Mary the Virgin, Speen, Berkshire was my 4th great-grandfather.
I spent a lot of time at Reading record office years ago and if I can help you with the siblings I have a few notes about them.
Regards.
Alan.

Elizabeth Povey was the sister of John Povey 1724 to 1773 married to Mary Painter, my wife's Povey line goes back to him. His father I think was a John married to Elizabeth Bennett although now hear that maybe John's dad was Michael, married to E Bennett. Anyone able to add to this tree branch?

Hi folks, my Grandmother was a Povey & the Povey family is vast, originally centred in West Berkshire area.
John Povey seems to be the most popular name within this family viz my own G G Grandfather was John Povey b.1819 who was a Grandson Of John Povey b.1749 who in turn was a Grandson of John Povey b.circa 1700 my 6G Grandfather so caution is needed when researching a John Povey. There is a record of a Lt John Povey in the Duke of Monmouthshire’s rebellion & and after they lost he hid in the family home at Chievley.
I have a couple of Povey reports which the majority was researched by my cousin at Berks RO some years back and information from my own research as well as other Povey researchers, which I am happy to share if you send me a Rootschat PM with your email address. These documents do refer to a William Povey now Living at Speen s/o John Povey Yeoman from Elcott Kintbury.
From all of the research I am convinced that Povey is a single family name not an occupational surname perhaps descended from Justinian Povey d.1652 (See Wikipedia) and perhaps Justinian Povey had a country home in West Berkshire at Chievley? His 3 sons were named John , William & Thomas Povey??

If you look under the user's name on the left-hand side of the posts, you will see two small icons/buttons as in the attached.
Clicking the left hand one will take you to the user's profile. Clicking the right-hand one (it looks like a page of writing) will take you to the personal message page so that you can send a message to them. If the icon is green i means that they are currently online.
You can also access the system by clicking on the "My Messages" button in the black top bar. The option to compose a message is on the top left side-bar under "Messages" as "New message"
Hope that helps.

Hello.
In my research at the Reading record office I got back to John Povey 1750 born Speen parents John and Mary and made notes of the other 6 children.
I have a private tree on Ancestry.
Could you please let me know what information you want.
