Title: Forder Family of West Tisted
Post by: vivijune on Tuesday 13 December 11 00:16 GMT (UK)
I'm wondering if anyone can help me locate the family of a Mary Ann Forder1814, born in West Tisted who married William Hutchins 1820 of Northington. I just found West Tisted on a current map of Hampshire and it only has 180 inhabitants even today.

I'd appreciate knowing more about her or her parents. Her eldest son Jesse was born in the village in 1838. The rest of her family of five were born at Swarraton. Her youngest son William 1847 became a postman and moved to Cliddesden where he became the postmaster.

Seasons Greeting to all and thanks in advance for any help with Mary Ann.

That looks like a much better match than Millbrook

As you have probably already found from your map searches, Millbrook is in Southampton - right down by the container terminal.  West Tisted is approximately 15 miles to the north east.

With VW's info, you may well be able to find her parents - or one of them - still alive in West Tisted in 1841.

Hi
I've just started tracing my family tree and your request re: Mary Ann adds an interesting piece to my puzzle.
If indeed she is d/o James and Elizabeth then she is one 8 children that I have found so far; she had left home before the 1841 census so up until now I had not come across a Mary Ann. I am descended from a Edwin Stephen 1849, who appears in the 1851 census listed as James and Elizabeth's grandson. I can't find any birth/baptism record for him so don't which of James and Elizabeth's children is his parent!

James Forder 1783 is s/o John Forder and Elizabeth Spencer m. 8 Nov 1773 whilst Elizabeth (nee. Cooper) is d/o John Cooper and Sophia Caute m. 30 May 1785.

Hope this helps with your research, I'd be keen to hear any further information you have on James' father, John. I have more information on Mary Ann's siblings if you need it too; for example: her oldest son Jesse is born in the same year as James and Elizabeth's youngest son, also called Jesse (aged 3 in 1841 census) however he does not appear in the household 10 years later. The family lived on Manor farm in both 1841 and 1851.

All the best.

James FORDEN, 55
Elizabets, 55
John, 25
Naomi, 20
Levy, 15
George, 64
EMELY, 13
Lucy, 12
Lesse (Jesse), 3

JESSE Forden Christened 25 March 1838, West Tisted is the Son of MARY ANN Forden so borrn I would say before her Marriage to William HUTCHINS 1841

Thanks Trish, that is fascinating! I've only being researching for a couple of day, signed up to findmypast.co.uk, and it is great to know where else I can look for stuff; eating up my payasyougo credits!  :'(

Didn't even cross my mind that Emily might be Edwin Stephen's mother as he is living with his grandparents in 1851 whilst Emily is not (George & Naomi still are).

Thanks again,

Tom

Your welcome Tom :)

Now at this stage I think she Married Edward NEWMAN and appears on the 1881/1891/1901 Census as Emily Newman born c 1828, West Tisted, Hampshire.
(I just searched for a Emily, no surname, born c 1828 West Tisted)

Trouble is I cant find the Marriage that convinces me totally.
FreeBMD has a Emily Forder Marriage, Dec 1873, Alresford, 2c 326.
But there are no other possible spouses listed on the page.

But if you search for a Marriage for Edward Newman March 1873-Dec 1873 he comes up with this Reg;
June 1873, Alresford, 2c 237 and a Elizabeth SMITH pops up.

Looks like it has been mistranscribed ie ref no and that is the correct Marriage.
See what you think.

They had no Children.

Trish (whos off to bed here in Australia) :)

OK no so sure about that Marriage now as the IGI has Edward marrying Elizabeth SMITH, 1873.
Will have to look at this aagian tomorrow as my head is not working well at 3.00am.

RovingFord.

You've found the right place here at Rootschat to get help when you need it. People are so helpful and skilled. I've pieced together my husband's family back history far beyond what is currently known to the point where it's become a terrific narrative to be sent to members of the family backed up by strong documented facts. I couldn't have done it without my rootschatters who helped me extricate myself from dead ends or solved a mystery that had caused a road block.

Maybe I'll see you in West Tisted one day but it's a long way from the US. Tiny place but very quaint!

Cheers... Viv

I agree Viv. Rootschat is an amazing Community.

Look like Emily had another Illeg Child;

Mother EMILY Forder

Look like he died age 8 in 1869, Death Reg March 1869, Alresford (FreeBMD) :(

Thanks for the post Viv and thank you Trish for yet more info!

My tree is growing exponentially; it seems they were breeding like rabbits all within West Tisted. The parish is tiny with less than 200 people living there.
I think a trip to Hampshire is in order to have a look round the church!

Should probably do some of the work I'm paid for though... oops!

Thanks again for all the help. Having lots of fun piecing together all the different families that seem to have been around West Tisted in the early to mid 1800s.

Trish - thanks for you attempts at trying to find out what happened to Emily. I am still trying to find out what happened to her. Its interesting and frustrating how the same names appear in all the different families; although that is the traditional way and nature of genealogy!!

Rather than continually expand my tree (I've over 20 in one generation now) I'm trying to follow a few individuals: What happened to Edwin Stephen's mother (Emely b.1828)? Why was he not living with her in 1851? What made him move to the Kingston area of Surrey where he started his own family? There's no record of him between the 1951 census (aged 2 in West Tisted) and marrying his first wife Mary Ann Wood in Kingston, 1876! So much fun to be had, although I'm not expecting to find all the answers!

Happy hunting!

Tom

Hi Tom,
1 Question answered;
In 1851 Emily Forder, age 29, birth c 1829, West Tisted, is a Servant (Housekeeper) in Tisheridge Household.
Even in those days a single Mother had to work and that explains why Edwin is with his Grandparents.

Hopefully Viv and Tom will see this soon.

Trish, thankyou.

I'm on vacation and away from my notes but you're right, John Forder married Elizabeth Spencer in 1783 and my Mary Ann Forder was their daughter. Elizabeth's maiden name would have been Spencer so are you saying that there is another Elizabeth (or do you mean Emily) with different parents: Cooper/Caute?

Hello!
Not looked in to this for a while; nice to reopen it!
Just to check this is Levi Forder (b. May 1825) married Elizabeth Ellen Tostafine in 1845, s/o James Forder & Elizabeth Cooper?

If so: James Forder(b. 1783) Elizabeth (b. 1786) they married on 19 Dec 1803 in West Tisted 1803.
I have James as the son of John Forder and Elizabeth Spencer who married on 8 nov 1773 also in West Tisted. No dob for John so my trail goes cold there (1745/53? Wincester St. Faith?)

I actually followed through levi (not as common as james and john) son Levi George, his son James George and then his son Fredrick George.

Hope that helps!

Tom

Hi that's great thanks.

Yes Levi married Elizabeth Ellen Tostafine 19 Dec 1846 West Tisted, Hampshire, England. I'm related through their daughter Mary Ann.

The Tostafines are quite interesting for research.

We seem to share the same Mary Ann Forder as an ancestor. She married William Hutchins and our thread is through her son another William who was born in 1820.

Thanks for all the posts.

Hi Pauly.

Same here. Give us some names and we can see where we fit in. My Mary Ann Forder was one of the middle children in a large family from West Tisted and was born in 1814. She married a William Hutchins and they moved to Northington/Swarraton where they raised their family.

If you go back to Trish's January 10th post she lists all the children in that family and the parents so it may be easy to spot who you are descended from in the early 1800's.

I just visited the area in Hampshire and it is a beautiful piece of England. Alresford is certainly a pleasant market town and would have been newly rebuilt when they all lived in the area after the town's fire. I can imagine them walking the streets on market days.

Welcome to the board. This thread is a great example of how helpful Rootschatters can be!

Hi I am interested in the Forder family of West Tisted. Esther, daughter of Levi Forder and Ellen Elizabeth Tostafine, born Dec quarter 1854 is in our family tree. She married Harman Tarrant 1877 and they were in the 1881 census (as Tarrants) and 1891. Harman died 1891 after the census where they were living at Preston, Sussex. I cannot find out whether Esther married again or when she died. Does anyone have information about her. She had no children. Judith

Have just joined the board.  My 3 x Great Grandfather was James Forder who was Baptised 6 Jan 1783 in West Tisted. His parents were John & Elizabeth. James married Elizabeth Cooper 19 Dec 1803 in West Tisted.  Have been researching my family tree for about 9 years and have built up a large collection of records including copies of some BMD Certificates.  Would like to hear from anyone with interest in the Forder Family of West Tisted.  I have over 700 individuals on my family tree.
