Hi,
I have an ancestor from Coldstream who was a photographer there, his name was John Foster, born 1825,Berwick-upon Tweed, in the census return 1861 he is enumerated at 30 High St, Coldstream (photographic artist). in 1871 at Dunse Rd, Old Manse Coldstream (photographer)and 1881 17 Dunse Rd (old Manse), Coldstream, (photographer) he died in 1889 Old Manse Coldstream.
My request is for any information into his professional life, is there anyone who may have old photo`s taken by him or anyone with any suggestions where i could get any more info about his professional career.
Regards,
Ross.

Hi Ross,
A little booklet titled Photographers in Southern Scotland to 1914 gives the following information: -
FOSTER Joseph
1866 Photographic artist, High Street (east), Coldstream. (John)
1878-1882 Dunse Loan, Coldstream
1881 Photographer called 'John' Foster, aged 55, b. England, resident Old Manse, 17 Dunse Road, Coldstream, wife Elizabeth F., niece, Isabella McGregor.
1886-1889 Photographic Artist, Old Manse, Dunse Road, Coldstream. (Listed under 'John').
I have a couple of photographs of young men taken by Foster. They are presumably my relatives but we are not sure who they are.
Hope the above info is useful.

Hi Brina,
Thanks for info very interesting, John Foster who I first made the Query about is my 3 x Grand Uncle, I know he became a photographer between 1851 and 1861, but the info you sent suggest a Joseph Foster was also a photographer in Coldstream, this is very interesting as John`s brother my 3 x Great Grandfather was Joseph Foster Did they start the business together??????.
Sometimes when one delves into one`s ancestors the answers create more questions than they answer, but perhaps that's why it such an interesting hobby.
Are the photo`s you have Carte de Visites, the type with the address of the Photographer on the back if so would it be too cheeky to ask you for a copy of both front & back, it would be good to have a photo taken by him even if I don`t know who is is. I can send you my e-mail; address on a personal message,
Thanks again, Best Regards.

Hi Ross,
If you PM me I will be happy to send you copies. I do not have the originals but the person who sent them to me copied both back and front. I received the copies from Australia so presumably the carte de visite was sent out to my relatives out there. We are not sure who the young men are but they will most definitely be my relations.

I found this one among a collection of old various FRISKEN family photos. I'm doing a One Name Study of this family name - please let me know if you have any clues as to the individual. I have further information and a large tree of all the associated families in the area of Coldstream at the time the photo was likely to have been taken.
It would be very useful to know if the photographer John Foster used different logos on the rear of the prints during his time in Coldstream.

Hi Ross, I know this was posted a long while ago but it was an interesting recent find for me. John Foster is also my 3 x grand uncle. I am descended from John's sister Jane who married Robert Davidson in Coldstream. I have found a few photos taken by John recently on Ebay and made digital copies. Happy to forward to you in case you don't already have them. Just wish I knew who the sitters were!

Hi Ed, As I am new on here, it appears I am unable to PM you directly to send attachments until I have posted a few more messages on here. I have the photos all copied onto a Word doc and there are 3 different logo designs on them but I'm not sure how I can get them to you. I think if you search on Ebay for 'John Foster Coldstream' they should still all show up. Sorry!!

Hi Ross and Wend
I was just trying to get info on a photo I have and stumbled upon your message board. If you are still interested, I have a photo with the following stamp on the back: "Photographed by John Foster, High Street, Coldstream." Happy to send you a digital copy of both the front and back. It's a rather gorgeous picture of an ancestor named Annie Bolton in her prime. You might need to let me know how I can send it to you. Can we do private messages here?
All the best,
Corinne
