Does anyone know why it is that the 'records' of Milltown Cemetery are now available on the web. It seems rather odd, given that the City cemetery records are now available, that these records are only available on site. Any suggestion fot us out of towners who would like to search for relatives known to be buried in Milltown.
Thanks
Bernard

Basically looking for my grandparents:
Mary Catherine Hillick
Peter Hillick
Looking for sisters: Catherine and Ellen Hillick
Sorry about dates, but that is one severe disadvantage of not knowing your grandparents before we moved to Canada. I'm pretty sure that Mary Catherine died in mid 1970s whilst Peter is around 1956/57. As for my sisters Catherine and Ellen, sometime after 1940/
Thanks so very much for the help
Bernard

Bernard,
Sorry, I have had a look and none of your names were listed on my microfiche which is a transcription of headstones.

-
Wow, that is weird. Any transcriptions for the name Hillick?
Thanks

It's only recently that the Belfast cemetery records have been available online. The reason Milltown is not included is simple and explained on the site: "Please note that we do not look after, or hold records for, Milltown Cemetery or Knockbreda Cemetery. For more information, call Milltown Cemetery on 028 9061 3972 or Knockbreda Cemetery on 028 9049 4500."
http://www.belfastcity.gov.uk/burialrecords/
Many people did not have headstones which may be why they are listed in kingkerswell's microfiche.
-
Such a pity. I would well imagine that there are hundreds of thousands buried there. thanks for the information.
Cheers
Bernard
-
Milltown Cemetery would still have burial records so you could contact them with your query- sometimes a date of burial is needed for them to check through their ledgers but wouldn't hurt to ask.

Rosemary Joan,
Name is not listed in Milltown or in Friars Bush which I think was the original burying ground. I think that my microfiches only list those who had impressive grave stones.

Kingskerswell, Many thanks for looking. Onwards and upwards.

Hi
If you get the exact date of death, Milltown will be able to look up the records for you I think, and tell you where the graves are. You should contact the General Register of Births Deaths and Marriages,to find the death certificates, google on line, or I think they are located in Co Roscommon, you could phone them.
Lucy
-
Judging by the dates posted earlier in this thread (after 1921) Roscommon will not have the certificates and GRONI will probably only search for a certain period (used to be year +/- 2 years).
-
hello kingskerswell, could you please look up for any mcaleavy on your microfiche, they died about 1939/1941. they would be the early children as the marriage was, iam told 1938/39. many thanks for you help. regards william.
-
Hi wb54,
The only McAleavy headstone is for a John McAleavy who died 1n 1900, his father James who died 1903 and James' wife Mary who died 1911. It also includes the daughter of James and Mary, Elizabeth Byrne, who died 1940. If this is relevant I will give you the full transcription.
Regards
-
hello kingskerswell, thank you for your fast reply, we are not sure about james. my late father in law was arthur mcaleavy born 1919 and died 1988, his father was called hugh from the short strand. could you sent the info on james and mary. when i get back over to belfast i will check the old papers and might find something to link them to hugh. many thanks, regards william.
-
Hi,
Transcription from headstone.
" (large white headstone in a stone enclosure) Erected by James McAleavy in loving memory of his son John who died Dec 1900. The above James McAleavy died 7 Aug 1903 aged 62 years. His wife mary who died 24 Aug 1911 aged 69 years. Also their daughter Elizabeth Byrne who died 25 Aug 1940, RIP
(John McAleavy was a labourer 10 Saul Street, near Mountpottinger Road)
Note. Mountpottinger Road is close to Short Strand.

Hi wb54,
I transcribed the wrong headstone. The above name should be McALEVEY.
The correct one is:-
(White headstone in a railed surround)
Erected by Patrick McAleavey in loving memory of his mother Cecelia McAleavey who died 23 Jun 1871 aged 80 years. Also his wife Sarah McAleavey who died 31 Jul 1872 aged 33 years. Also his sister Rose Ann McAleavey who died 10 May 1884 aged 56 years. Also his brother James McAleavey who died 4 Sept 1886 aged 51 years. Also the above named Patrick McAleavey who died 15 Apr 1913 aged 83 years. R I P.
(In the 1870s Patrick McAleavey was a labourer at 130 Millfield)

Hi Lynn,

Hi, I have spent a fortune getting grave searches done in Milltown only to discover that they are available for free in PRONI.
It is very time consuming to go through the micro films but it is so worthwhile.
Included:
Burial records for general grounds from 1871-1960 (some 1962s).
Register of Grants.
Poor or public ground burials.
Friars Bush burials.
I have found so much family info by doing this it has really helped with my tree.
I found a grave bought by my Great Great Granda in 1871 and interred in it children that my family didnt know existed.
On the same day a grave was purchased by his next door neighbour, this neighbour was the sponsor 4 my Great Granda in 1876 - I was finally able trace who this lady was as her surname didnt match any on my tree. I now believe she is the sister of my Great Great Granda.
I have recorded the following family names and can check my records:
Dempsey, Donnelly, Farr, Foster, Gracey, Madden, Nolan, O'Hara, O'Neill, Rooney.
I am currently recording Bogue, Boyle, Shiels, McAlister & McCormack

Hello Kingskerswell. If you have not tired of searching Milltown Cemetery records, would you kindly check for McVeighs, McIvors and Leitchs, in particular, Peter McVeigh who died in about 1941, Catherine Mcveigh who died in 1942, Bridget Jane McIvor who died in 1908, and Bridget Jane Leitch (after 1911)?
-
Hi,
Most of the burials on my list are before 1900 and I cannot find any of your names but there are two McVeigh graves.

Thank you Kingskerswell. At this stage, I do not know of any connection to these McVeighs, but I will record the information for future reference.

Hi, I have been tracing my family tree thru' the Milltown Burial records in Proni - 1869 - 1962.
The info I have found is amazing charting not only my family history but it seems like a part of the social history of Belfast.
In the late 1800s and early 1900s it seems the majority of people died at home and so many burials were for babies, infants and young adults, sometimes mutiple burials on the same day in the same family.
The pogroms in the 1920s can be seen in the records as well as the many burials because of the Blitz in the 1940s.
Then in the later records more & more people were dying in hospital.
I have found the records so helpful in going back another generation, sometimes two because it is possible to find out who purchased the plot.
AMAZING, FASCINATING, SAD, MOVING.
I have recorded as many names connected to my tree and the trees of friends as I could so If ur family name appears below I may have burial info that is of use to you......

kingserswell: lo'...i have a purchase of right of burial cert #9648 from millltown, purchaser patrick mcauley (b1860s), 18 November 1918. are you able to tell me who is buried in this plot? family is not much on headstones, so no worries if you come up empty. have a death registration for patrick which is dated 1934, so not him, but maybe wife rose, one of their childer, or a sibling? thx for looking and appreciate the help yourself and others like you (loneygrandchild, to name one) for all your efforts on others behalf.

Hi therave, some McAuley info that may be useful 4 u.
1880 Patrick age33 Ship Street
1924 Patrick age 1yr 4 mths Sheriff Street
1951 Patrick age 43 Jamacia Street
1952 Patrick age 79 yrs California Street
1957 Rose age 64 yrs Trainfield Street
1960 Thomas age 68 yrs Trainfield Street
Rose & Thomas in same grave
1949 Francis 74 yrs Vulcan Street
1949 Francis & 1924 Patrick in same grave.
Francis & Patrick in same grave as these 3 Lundys: 1924 Isabella (47 yrs), 1930 James (9 mths) & 1934 Charles (68 yrs).
If any of these r ur relatives I can PM u burial date & house number.
I have the plot numbers but sometimes the writing on micro film is difficult to read so these need to be double checked.
Am still updating McAuley burials.
LGC
-
thanks again loney, but not a single mcauley is related (from what i know to date).
isabella lundy may be a connection, but i have more work to do on this. the previously mentioned samuel lundy from short stand street (who disappeared shortly after being widowed at 21) was married to a mary ann mcauley (no connection to other mcauleys - at least as far as i know!) and i would suspect some may be relations of hers as there are a few streets from the short strand area in there.
FYI: i was looking through my documents and came up with an agnes mcauley b 02 Aug 1887, baptd 04 Aug 1887 in st pat's rc, dau of MARGARET SHIELS and patrick mcauley, witness mary a pendleton. your margaret? if so, you're welcome to the record i have purchased as i cannot make a connection to my mcauleys or sheils'.
my mcauleys came from ahoghill to the lower falls and moved around the area A LOT, but they never seemed to live in any other part of Belfast.
thanks again!

I've been directed towards Milltown for ancestors who lived in Falls Road in the early C20th.
James McConville died on 8th August 1905 and his wife Mary McConville nee McAtamney on 19th December 1910. I would be very grateful if anyone has access to records that show them - and perhaps their daughter Elizabeth - fate unknown. Will chase up with Milltown Cemetery - but hard to contact them.

Hi,
We recently visited Milltown Cemetery, and although we managed to obtain 3 plot numbers, we ran out of time to actually visit the graves, so if anyone is going up to the cemetery just wondered if you would be kind enough to look up these graves and if they have a headstone, what is on it. We managed to visit my husband´s grandparents grave while there, these are great grandparents and great great grandparents.
Many thanks in advance.
-
Hi, this link may be useful for you.
I don't know if all headstones have been photographed but if you ancestors graves have a headstone then it should be here.

Hi kingserswell, I wonder if you could help me by looking for CARSON.
I can see that there are a few Memorial Stones at Milltown which are quite recent, but I'm looking for those buried from 1870 onwards. My GGF, James Carson, born circa 1859 states in the 1911 E&W census that he was from Belfast. All I know of him is that his father was Robert.
Very grateful for your help. Kit
-
Hi Kit,
Can't find any Carsons in my list for Milltown . Have you seen the on-line lists for some other cemeteries? See https://ssl.belfastcity.gov.uk/burialsearch/BurialSearch.aspx
Regards
-
Thanks very much for checking. Getting more and more convinced that he was either from an outlying area of 'Belfast' or he didn't become Catholic until his marriage in 1886. Kit
-
Unlike belfast City which the Council has put online to search Milltown Cemetery is a private burial ground and is owned by the local Catholic Church, so it would make more sense to write to them, they can provide you with details from the PRs.
Not sure without reading the 12 or so pages of this thread if anyone has posted the website, if so sorry, if not here it is http://www.milltowncemetery.com/
-
Thanks for your interest iluleah. Very frustrated as I can't find a birth for James born c1859 and all I have is his Catholic marriage and the 1911 E&W census. I'm not sure what I would gain from getting in touch with Milltown other than confirm that there are/are not Carson's buried there. I only have knowledge that James' father was Robert but no idea when he would have died. Maybe the 1921 census will be more enlightening. Kit
-
Not sure if you have already seen this http://www.carsontree.talktalk.net/Carsons/fpx_carson_history.htm
Whitehead is about 20 miles from Belfast lying almost midway between the towns of Carrickfergus and Larne
-
Thanks for the link, which made good reading. I'm not sure James would say he was from Belfast if he was from 20 miles away, but who knows. Certainly not me :(
-
Can you do a lookup in Milltown Cemetery for a John Greenan died on April 10, 1914 at 54 Surrey St., Windsor Ward, Belfast, please. He was Catholic.

I can only find one Greenan burial and that is for John Greenan but he died on 7 May 1915. He was buried in the grave of his brother-in-law, Hans Savage, a publican.

Thank you for checking John Greenan for me. The one you gave me is not him.

Hi,
So sorry to jump onto the band wagon, have just found my great grandfathers death certificate and he died on 3rd October 1934, his name was William John Kane.
I was on google trying to find an email address for Milltown (I have been reliably informed that this is where he will be buried) and came across this thread.
Would it be possible to look at his burial details.
Many thanks.

Hi Kath, if you phone Milltown they will give you the plot number (02890613972)
If you want to know who else is in grave then you will have to pay for a grave search.
This is a useful link:

I telephoned Milltown and unfortunately they had no record. I gave them details of the death of one of his daughters in 1898 and they could not find any record of her neither.
A lovely lady doing investigations on burials in the poor ground of places like Milltown, did find her burial in Milltown. I see that there are lists for Milltown, is there any way of finding my great grandad on these, as sadly telephoning Milltown didn't prove to be fruitful.
Many thanks.

Ah, I think the lists are just for the burials with headstones. Don't think great grandad would have had one. Will have to give up on this one I think!

Hi LGC I know it's an old post but do you still have the Casey records?
-
Hi Cath68, I have some Casey burial info for both General Ground & the Poor Ground.
If you post or private message me any dates, names or addresses I'd be happy to check for you.

Hope this helps,
