Title: Donaldson Family
Post by: Torwoodlee on Tuesday 27 December 11 23:19 GMT (UK)
Hello, I having troubles finding a branch of my family in both the 1851 and 1861 censuses.  Jane Tweedie (1822-1898) married to James Donaldson born circa 1823 and their children:  James Donaldson born circa 1849, Elizabeth born 1850, Robert born 1852, another James circa 1855, Peter born circa 1857, Clara born c 1860, William born 1861 and Jane born 1863.  I believe most were born in Haddington, East Lothian but Jane my great great grandmother was born in Selkirk apparently.  If anyone could help I would be very appreciative.
Thank you
 :)

They are in Mill Street, Selkirk in 1861  No signof Robert tho.  Jane the mother was born in Gladsmuir and the father James was born in Kirleton, Haddingtonshire.

Hi barbara13511,

I suspect that James was born in Dirleton, Haddingtonshire now East Lothian. Possible mistranscription of the records. I have Donaldsons in my tree, but mostly fisherman from Cockenzie and Port Seton parts of East Lothian. However I will do some checking and see if I can get a match up.

Hi barbara13511,

I found them on 1851 Freecen, confirmed Dirleton and that he was a porter on the Railway. I found there marriage on FreeReg,

http://www.freereg.org.uk/cgi/SearchResults.pl?RecordType=Marriages&RecordID=451217

This also confirms he was a porter but he was from Longniddry which was part of Gladsmuir parish, which is near to Cockenzie and Port Seton. There used to be a railway line to Haddington but it was only a branch line from Longniddry, to get to Edinburgh you had to travel via Longniddry. This line opened 22nd June 1846, so James may have worked there since it opened.

Hi barbara13511,

I have downloaded the births to ''James Donaldson and Jane Tweedie", 9 in all,

ELIZABETH DONALDSON  b 24 NOV 1850 Haddington
ROBERT DONALDSON  b 20 JUL 1852 Haddington
JAMES DONALDSON  b 05 JUN 1854 Haddington
PETER DONALDSON   b 21 MAY 1856 Haddington
ROBERT DONALDSON   b 17 JUL 1858 Haddington
CLARASSIA DONALDSON  b 27 FEB 1860 Haddington
WILLIAM DONALDSON  b 27 DEC 1861 Selkirk
JANE DONALDSON   b 11 NOV 1863 Selkirk
JOHN DONALDSON   b 20 JUL 1866 Selkirk

It shows there must have been 2 infant deaths, both named Robert, and that they moved to Selkirk between Feb 1860 and December 1861. Also Scottish Naming tradition was not used as Robert and Elizabeth were Jane Tweedie's parents, however I maybe incorrect if Robert was James's fathers name as well. I haven't been able to pin down James's birth or baptismal record.

Hi barbara13511,

Here is the link to FreeReg for the birth of Jane Tweedie,

http://www.freereg.org.uk/cgi/SearchResults.pl?RecordType=Baptisms&RecordID=1290551

It shows parents as Robert Tweedie and Elizabeth Merrylees, he was a carrier and they lived at Penston, near Gladsmuir.

Well that has tied it all up for Border Lass, Tom.  Wondered about Kirleton had never heard of it!

Thanks

Hi barbara13511,

Sorry for addressing you all the time instead of Borders Lass, I obviously missed her name in first post, just an early senior moment, maybe not so early.

Borders Lass,

Do you have parents of James Donaldson who married Jean (Jane) Tweedie? I cannot find them.

Hello and thank you so much for all of your help Tom and Barbara!  Tom, I don't have parents for James Donaldson unfortunately; I thought that I would look into that next but I'm not sure what route to take.  I am fairly new at family research.

Hi Borders Lass,

I think I may have found them on FreeReg, born 15 Apr 1823 then baptized 14 Dec 1823 (8 months later)
http://www.freereg.org.uk/cgi/SearchResults.pl?RecordType=Baptisms&RecordID=1520343 (http://www.freereg.org.uk/cgi/SearchResults.pl?RecordType=Baptisms&RecordID=1520343)

and also James Donaldson married Clarissa Samson/Sanson 03 JUN 1824  at Gladsmuir, East Lothian. As young James was shown as illegitimate on baptismal record, parents married 14 months later, it would suggest Kirk Session may have been involved.

On the 1841 Census, James and Clarissa are shown, with Frances 7, William 4 and John Ewart, I suspect the 18yo James is working elsewhere, will need to search for him. There are 3 in 1841 census, 2 are with their own families, and one, is shown as an Ag Lab, athough aged 20 yo.

Tom

PS the link to baptism may not work, FreeReg change record numbers frequently,I have changed today but may change tomorrow.

Thank you again Tom!  It lists James Donaldson senior's occupation as follows:  FatherOccupation Resodejter
Any ideas what on earth that is?!  I googled it and Swedish webpages came up, LOL!!
You mentioned the Kirk Session may have been involved with James senior and Clarissa Samson's marriage.  What does that mean?

The OPR entry for James' baptism in 1823 records his father, James Donaldson, as a Residenter at Trabrown*

Do you have a death record for either of them?

* he was an ag lab on the 1841.

Tom means that the Kirk Session would probably rebuke them for having a child out of wedlock and this would be in their session minutes which are usually held locally.  So probably at Haddington record office.

While looking at the death records I found that this child (as Clarissa) , listed by Tom,  died in 1861, Selkirk:

CLARASSIA DONALDSON  b 27 FEB 1860 Haddington

I'm always suspicious of parents' names on death certs and like to do double checks if poss. The IGI had a submitted record for the baptism of James, snr, and this is also in the OPRs:

24 July 1796, Gladsmuir, East Lothian - James Donaldson. Parents - Alexander Donaldson and Agness Neilson

Hi all,

On FreeReg, it agrees with the Alexander Donaldson and Agness Nielsen on the James Donaldson baptism of 24 Jul 1796.

Greetings everyone....

In searching, yet again, for family in Midlem I stumbled upon these posts. I had been told all along that I still had family there and I am wondering if the names here may be what I have been looking for. Some of the Donaldson's that I am related to came to the US in 1794-1796 but some of their family stayed behind. Any help that you could afford me would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Kaye Donaldson

Hi Kaye,

Welcome to Rootschat, hope you enjoy the research. Can you give any of the names left behind, did they come from Haddingtonshire now East Lothian? Midlem, Selkirkshire is about 30 to 40 miles away.
