Title: Help - Swales/Hall/Hibbert
Post by: felixmac on Friday 30 December 11 16:49 GMT (UK)
Trying to trace Dad's family tree and his names!!
Born Leonard Swales 18/06/1921 to Hetty Swales (formerly Hall) in Fylde, Blackpool South.
Marriage certificate to my mum shows Leonard Iredale Hibbert in RAF, 1945
Any clues how to progress either way - made harder as he disappeard in 1961! So clues after that would help too - name changes?
Thanks
Felix

Hullo Felix and welcome to rootschat :)

The marriage cert.should show your father's father's name and occupation.

One point needs making- on rootschat we are notb allowed to trace the living, so maybe this is the reason you have not had replies yet.
Have you searched forhis death?

Hi

Welcome to rootschat  :)

There are quite a few births early 1900's with surname Swales mothers maiden name Hall on
http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/cgi/birthind.cgi?county=lancashire
just put in both surnames and select Blackpool and 1901 onwards. Perhaps they could all be the same family?

Hi Vindex

A warm welcome to Rootschat.

Felixmac hasn't been on the site for a while but if his email address is still active, he should receive a message saying that you have made a comment.

Hi Vindex

Sorry to use this forum to reach out to you, however as I'm a new member I think I lack the functionality to PM you.

Felixmac was my wife's uncle, however he passed away a couple of years ago. Leonard Hibbert is my wife's grandfather, and as such I'm trying to pick up where Felix left off on behalf of her and Felix's 2 remaining brothers. Any help with filling in the blanks would be greatly appreciated.

Apologies for using this forum to contact you, however options are limited.

Kind Regards

Yes, for security/anti-spam measures one needs to make more than 1 post to contact anyone privately.

Hi.  I was happy to receive your message today.  Like you I'm not sure how to work the Rootschat system but if we can work that out I will try to fill in the gaps regarding Hetty Swales! An interesting lady.

wontok needs to make another couple of posts. Why not have a go at one or two other enquiries on the forum?  Then you'll be able to use the private message function to exchange contact information and communicate anything sensitive.
It's sensible security. Everything posted on the open forum is googlable. As well as that a new poster on here last week was a scammer advertising a porn site.

Am I correct in thinking that Leonard had changed his surname at time of marriage and changed it back again by time of death?

Vindex, you can use the PM system now.

There is an interesting article in a tree on ancestry which names him in a newspaper cutting as Leonard Iredale Hibbert in Rhodesia naming a wife as Patricia Hibbert formerly Thomas

Thanks everyone for your responses and thanks Vindex for reaching out to me via PM, however still unable to directly reply. I'll follow the advice given in this thread.
Leonard Swales / Hibbert - complex family member to follow. I also found the 2 newspaper clippings regarding Leonard Hibbert & Patricia Thomas a couple of years ago. It was the first time my father in-law (Leonard's son) had heard that his father had re-married whilst in Rhodesia. He was 8 and Felixmac was 6 when Leonard and his mother split and they never heard from him again. Clearly Leonard chose to remain private from that point on, however we've all decided that will not be a road block in tracing other family further back, hence our interest in Hetty.
Thanks everyone for your response. Vindex, unable to respond to your PM as pointed out by experienced members, however will endeavor soon.
