Title: A Penzance Photographer William REYNOLDS
Post by: aginger on Saturday 31 December 11 09:15 GMT (UK)
Hi all,in 2005 I bought a carrier bag full of family photo,s at a car boot sale in Swindon Wiltshire, the only clue was an old one featuring "Gran and Gramp MADDERN and the studio photo was produced by William Richards ,2 Queen Street Penzance.
Would any of our Cornish Rootschatters be able to tell me when this photographer was active please. it is signed on reverse Asenath Dowden 1976. Also is a photo af a Mary Harvey and Mary Harvey,s father both signed by same lady "Asenath Dowden.
The old couple are possibly William Maddren and Mary who lived in Newlyn and had a daughter Asenath S Maddren bn 1868 who married a William John Shannon 1870 at Portsea in 1891,their Daughter Asenath Shannon bn 1900 Portsmouth married a Mr Dowden in 1920 and I reckon that she signed the photo,s.
Another photo is of William John Shannon in a concert party on board ship[he was in the RN on board "PRINCE GEORGE" in Gibraltar on 1901 Census.]
I am trying to put the photo,s back into the hands of the family concerned GRATIS and aim to post the images to all who have family links.
Allen.

Hi Allen,

Have you been in touch with the Cornish Historical society?   I receive their magazine and they seem to help people find missing 'things'!

Yes I put the wrong surname, sorry you are right RICHARDS but that puts another problem my way, if he was taking studio photo,s in the 1870,s the couple could be John Maddern or Maddren [1805]and wife Betsey[he was a fisherman] Paul and Newlyn] the son William was a Ropemaker on Censuses[ bn 1835.]

Thank you all, for helping on this one,.
I posted the photo,s for dating on other board, what results,in fact fantastic at the skills of fellow"chatters" It looks as though "Mary Harvey,s Father" ia a Richard Harvey Bn 1801 Newlyn, And" Mary Harvey" was born in 1835 Newlyn, She had first married "John Kneebone" in 1858 and then William Maddren in 1863,the older couple Gran and Gramp Maddren ,s photo dated by "jim1" as 1889 gives me the impression that the Gran is in fact "Mary Harvey"later in life.

Hi All,

I have a strong suspicion these pictures are from my great grandfathers photography shop at No2 Queen street penzance, "Richards Photography". My mum was also born at the shop. I wonder whether the photographs are still around ? My mum & I would love to see them - as she is the only remaining direct relative. Please please do get in touch of you may be able to help.
Kind regards
