Title: Over Stowey Burials prior to 1813
Post by: nedda on Wednesday 04 January 12 03:16 GMT (UK)
Hi,

Just a quick question, I have found a page which has Over Stowey burials, but only from 1813.  Just wondering if I was looking for a family that lived in Over Stowey prior to that where would I look for Burial records?

(I did try Nether Stowey, but didn't find them there.)

Thanks

Nedda

Hi Nedda,

Ian Sage has a good quide to online Somerset parish register transcriptions:

http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/ian.sage/PR/pr_index.html

I'm afraid the post-1813 burials seem to be the only ones currently available.

You can buy microfiche copies of the registers from the Somerset Record Office.

(And then, if so inspired, you could transcribe them yourself, or lend them to FreeREG for someone else to do.)

Hi David,

Thanks for that information. I checked the site out. A few I have already been on.

Might have to try and see if my local LDS has anything.

Thanks

Nedda

I do not know if this is connected to your Walford's but this website mentions the demise of a John Walford who was hung in 1789 near Nether Stowey

Hi Peewee,

Thanks for that, yes I've just found out (like 2 days ago), that John Walford is the nephew of my 4 x g'grandfather.

I've got a few people I'd like to find maiden names from 1700's, but the rest of the stuff I'm chasing is 1600's and even late 1500's. So I know it's going to be quite difficult to get records.

Hi Nedda

Have you found this website covering marriages in Over Stowey from 1558 to 1811 which has several Walfords

Hi Peewee,

Thanks for that. Yes I do have that information I also think the person listed on the second line (Wansford) is one of mine, as well as John Waster on 30/10/1617.

Hmm well that's a bit confusing!  :-\ I went onto the Pallots Marriage Registers and found heaps of information. Just went on then and it's changed and now it won't find the people I know I found in there only days ago!

It's funny I did note when you look at the listing of marriage there are years missing. I'm looking for a marriage for 1591 and there is nothing. There is nothing for 1654 to 1686 either.

Hi Nedda
I live just down the road from Over Stowey.  Would you like me to go and have a look in the church yard?

Nedda

Have you read 'Paupers and Pig Killers.'?  It is the Diary of William Holland, vicar of Over Stowey, 1799-1818 and an interersting insight into life and the characters who lived in the parish.  William Holland is very outspoken about his parishoners. I read it when I first moved to the area 25 years ago and quickly realised that many of the people I got to know where direct decendants of those characters!  The book is published by Penguin Books but I can not see an ISBN number.

Hi KateW,

It's funny, my aunty rang me last week to say she has just ordered the book. So I will no doubt be reading it when she has finished.

Yes I'd like to get to know what life was like. Our relative was a bit naughty and had been caught stealing a number of times. I would like to get more of an idea of what exactly life was like I suppose that's the only way you can try to understand why they did what they did.

My aunty is going to the UK this year, so I'm hoping she would be able to squeeze in a visit to the area.

Thanks

Nedda

Hi,

I have just come across this thread whilst searching for information about an ancestor I believe we share. I have signed up to this site but have no idea how to use it. I was trying to send you a message but I couldn't work out how!

I am also related to the Walford family of Over Stowey. I believe John Walford is my 5 times great uncle. It would be good to speak with you and compare notes.

kind regards,

Hi Nedda,

I am wondering if you can help me tie up some loose ends in my family tree. I have two lots of the Walford line in my grandmother's line, Mary Walford married John Moore in 1804 at Nether Stowey. Mary's parents were John Walford and Mary Rich, and it is these two I am trying to find their births. I know John is not the one who murdered Jane Storney, but was he born in 1745 (I think the other John must have been born in 1748, as he was 21 when he was hung).

Can you help?

Chris

I would also look at Stogursey,  Strington, West Quantoxhead and in between Then you have Crowcombe etc.  All near by parishes over this side of the Quantocks, which some families would have headed too

Hubbies family were in Over Stowey, but also found in the above, either heading towards Stogursey later family, or coming from and working their way up from Minehead way.

I'm pretty sure that very early parish records for Over Stowey and Nether Stowey were lost in the rebellion, so only BT's can be found for this time.

My Nephew was married in Over Stowey Church
