Can anyone help me trace the family of Patrick Hughes who was born in County Monaghan, Ireland around 1850 and emigrated to Scotland before 1880. I have information after 1880 but would like to find out more about him prior to that date.

Did Patrick marry in Ireland or Scotland ?
It would be worth following up on his marriage and death certs to learn more about him - an Irish marriage cert should show his father's name and occupation, Scottish marriage & death certs usually include more details such as names of both parents ..
His birth is before the start of civil records so you will need to check for parish records for a possible baptism.

Patrick must have married in Scotland as his wife was born in Scotland. I do know that he died in Illinois as the family emigrated.
i'll check out his marriage.
