My friend's uncle was Lyndon John LEEK Service No 3915830 he was a corporal in the 3rd Btn Monmouthshire Regiment
He was killed on 03/04/1945 and the CWGC site says he's buried in REICHSWALD FOREST WAR CEMETERY in Germany.
Can anyone tell me(or where I can find) any more about the circumstances of his death.
He was aged just 22. The family thought he was buried in France.

Try "http://www.rrw.org.uk/museums/brecon/fact_sheets/24.htm" which will give you some background.
You might need to contact the museum to see if there is mention of his death in the regimental diaries.

The battalion has a war diary covering 1945 at the National Archives - details below.
WO 171/5246 3 Monmouthshire Regt. Jan-Dec 1945
It's unlikely that they will mention him by name but you will have a very good idea on what the unit was doing on the day of his death assuming he didn't die of wounds, there may be clues to this in the diary.

I'm new to the roootschat.com website and found the page with this subject through a Google search on the 3rd Battalion Monmouthshire Regiment during WW2. I note that some information is available from a few who have posted on here and would love to hear from you. My Grandmother's first husband Thomas Edward Brandreth (Pte. 4081459) was part of this Battalion and died 2nd April 1945 and his grave is at the Reichswald Forest Cemetery 43.H.14.
As well as his and the battalion's history of their participation during the conflict, I would particularly like to find out more about the final hours and where his body itself may be located (I presume the graves to be symbolic and not each soldiers actual final resting place).
Thomas's son William (uncle Bill to me) did visit the cemetery some years ago but would like to learn a bit more about his Dad's time in the army.
Any information will be gratefully received, thanks

His headstone is not symbolic. It marks his actual grave. It's possible his original grave was elsewhere but his remains were later moved to this cemetery. All this is explained on the CWGC website.

Hi, new to this forum and have found your message. My father served with 3 Mons from 1938 to 46 and after years of opportunity to find out about his service, I no longer have the pleasure of speaking to him. I love a copy of the diaries if possible. thanks, Mike.
