Title: Holburn. Ravenscraig Farm. Greenock
Post by: TAMOWEN4 on Sunday 15 January 12 18:54 GMT (UK)

Hi,

was surfing through the internet and came across the record of a Peter McDougall Holburn born in Greenock, and who had emigrated to Australia. He had served in the 1st WW. before retuning to Australia.

My interest in the surname was because my Uncles wife, my Aunt Jennie (Janet) maiden name was Holburn born c 1917 and lived at Ravenscraig farm Greenock. Her parents were John Holburn and Mary Crawford.

I wondered if Peter Holburn might have been a brother of my Aunt?

According to my mother the Holburns were either Tennents or owners of the farm.

Welcome any help

kind regards

Tommy

not sure if this is the same one but
there are a few trees on Ancestry
with a Peter McDougall Holburn on them
but they have parents as
James Holburn and Isabella Laidlaw Simpson
and they have his birthdate as 1888

Elaine
Added
1881 census for James and Isabella address is given as Gateside Farm off Inverkip Road

Thanks Sharon

the info you have given is interesting and show the relatives of Peter.

However although my Aunt's name was  Janet Holburn she was not born until around 1917 so the Janet listed cannot be her. Also my Aunts parents were John Holburn and Mary Crawford (Mary was born on Islay). John and Mary also worked at Ravenscraig farm.

Sorry that's the only limited info I have from my mother and cousin

Hi Elaine,,

thanks for this. If you want to type it out ok, if not that's fine also.

I think I may have confused things by mentioning Peter Holburn as Sharon listed his family. It does not appear to be the same as my Holburn.

My mum, now 84, remembers walking with her sister in law my aunt to the farm where the Holburns lived.

think I need to get on to Scotlands People  :-\

Thanks Elaine  :)

Robert Holburn (Senior) and Janet Holburn ms Scott. Ann St.

One of their sons John Miller Holburn a Dairyman at Gateside Farm (maybe my mum thought it was Ravenscraig) married Mary Crawford at 7 south st Greenock 1912.

My Aunt Jenny (Janet) Holburn was a child of theirs born 1917. I cannot view her birth on SP or find out for definate if she had siblings although my mother has said one of Janets siblings owned a wee shop around Mt Pleasant St.

Thanks for your help

Tommy  :)

I don't know if this has any connection but the last family to actually farm Drumshantie Farm, Tower Drive, Gourock were Holburns and they emigrated to Australia in 1956.  It was then occupied by a non farming tenant for a short while before being demolished.  Search Ancestry.com, using 'Holburn Family', for further information.  Hope this is helpful.
